The Enemy Below

I remember a Star Trek episode which was virtually identical to The Enemy Below plot. Except it was the Enterprise vs. some Romulan starship.

Balance of Terror--episode 1.9. My all-time favorite of that series.

Which TV show stole the idea (and footage) from the movie for an episode?

Balance of Terror ep 1.9--with Mark Lenard as the Romulan Kapitan.

Not any actual borrowed from TEB, but much of the last battle scenes were inspired by the movie. The only thing missing-would b the Romulans version of the "De Sauer March."

There are a few exceptions, but most Robert Mitchum movies are well worth watching.

What's wrong with this movie??

All the WWII German submariners ive ever known--also loe this movie--mainly because the Kapitan--Jurgen's character--portrayed a sub captain-that was much like the one they served with in WWII. Any "few exceptions" (not Mitchum film-wise) is that the vast majority of Uboat Kapitans--were honorable Kapitans--few were not.

ringo kid- By "exceptions" I certainly wasn't referring to "The Enemy Below". What I meant was that over the years, Robert Mitchum was in a few duds, though very few, far fewer than many actors.

I'm a long time Robert Mitchum fan.
Ah Bueno--I stand corrected. BTW--im a huge Mitchum fan. I never saw him do a poor performance of any type.

"Friends of Eddie Coyle", early '70s, was sub-standard for Robert Mitchum; a B movie at best. Couldn't finish watching that one. Seems he made a couple of others in that era that were comparable.

However, I don't think he was ever past his prime as he played some good roles far later than the '70s.

Glad you posted this. I had forgot about this movie but after reading the synopsis on Wikipedia I immediately remembered it. Yes, it's one of my favorite submarine shows about WWII, along with "Das Boot".

There was another show which used actual footage (and I believe music) from the movie.

Hint: It was also a science fiction show, but of an altogether lesser quality, albeit often entertaining.

This movie was one of my late Father's favorites. He was a plank owner on the Atherton DE-169 and his ship sank the last U-Boat of WW11 just off the coast by New Port ,RI. He was a First Class Signalman so was on the bridge thru out the battle, and is later pictured in the Whale Boat recovering debris from the sunken U-Boat. He recovered the German Kapitan's hat and gave it to his Capt., Lt Commander Iselin of the Atherton. It along with other artifacts is on display at the DE Sailors museum at Albany New York on the USS Slater ,the finest restored DE in the naval museums available. I really enjoyed seeing it when I was there.
