El Dorado with John Wayne and Robert Michum

Love John Wayne westerns but it has always bugged me that he made no real attempt to be historically correct in some. Rio Lobo took place directly after the Civil War but he shows up in town with his Peacemaker and Wichester. Same with The Comancheros that takes place way before (10-15 years) the Civil War. This is just 2 that stand out.

I wasn’t a big fan of “Sons of Katie Elder”, but it was based on the true story of the five Marlowe brothers in Graham, Texas, near my hometown.

The book “The Fighting Marlowes” was published back in the 90s and is a great account of the story.

Unfortunately, the story did not end as well for the Marlowes as it did the Elders.

I always found it interesting that John Wayne and Howard Hawks essentially made the same movie three times with Rio Bravo, El Dorado and Rio Lobo.

What? Nobody mentioned "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon " yet?

Its part of the ""Cav trlogy"" but my least favorite of the three. Fort Apache and Rio Grande are co-equals.:D What I dislike about Yellow Ribbon-is the over-acting. BTW-though I KNOW it wouldn't have been meant of part of the Cavalry Trilogy-and would have been before the trilogy took place. Id rather have had The Horse Soldiers as part of the trilogy instead of Yellow Ribbon. If it had been meant of a Cav Quad-whatever it could be called? THEN and only then would I have had it been part of the unofficial series. And yes-I fully know that H.S. story had nothing to do with the other. Just saying.

I love it. The ONLY time-a thrice made movie worked-and very well at that-and with the same lead star in the starring role too.

Not the only time.

You have.

"Yojimbo"
"A Fistful Of Dollars"
"Last Man Standing"

It's the same story in all of them.:D

Edit. Well, not with the same lead star.

Thug #1: "I guess you'll just have to kill me."

Bruce Willis: "It'll hurt if I do."

AH! My favourite piece of dialogue, in one of my favourite movies followed by one of my favourite gun action in a movie. :D

They didn't have John Wayne in this movie. But they did have the man who shot him from the back.:D

Yea BUT-we're talking about ONE leading star, not Clark Gable, Clint Eastwood and Unkn. :D Ive never seen the 3rd title.

"The Searchers" is probably my favorite if I HAD to pick one. With "True Grit" or "The Shootist" , right up there too.

The end of "The Searchers" is so classic....Everyone has someone...except for the Duke....He walks off....framed by the cabin door. WHAT a scene!

John Wayne was a great character actor playing himself. In my opinion his last film, The Shootist was his best acting. That movie stunned me with how good he was acting. Although he was acting like a hardened man dying of cancer, which he was. That said... Big Jake gets my favorite JW movie vote. He has some stinkers too, but with the crowd here I'll forget about them.

Great actors afterall are just great guys;just like Steve Mc Queen's last movie which was probably not his greatest but a good one was done while he too, like John Wayne, knew he was dying of cancer, these great men show us how to stand tall in front of the dead end while performing their job.One more reason to respect these icons;they are taller than Hollywood made them.

This was a pretty bad western. And not just because the three older brothers were desdbeats who only showed up after their mom died wondering how much money she had. Great scene where JW hits George Kennedy in the face with an ax handle. Not a mark on him later as I recall, though.

The "door" scene is Duke's tribute to Harry Carey Sr.

That’s pretty consistent with westerns of the day, where guys got thrown through windows without a scratch.

In reality, the Marlowe brothers doted on their widowed mother.

I watched this the other night. It is one of my favorite JW westerns. I also think Charlene Holt ( Maudey ) is a most handsome woman! Roi Lobo is great too. Big jake is just JW playing JW!!
