Does anyone use turn signals anymore?
Some days i wonder why new vehicles still have them.
I bet it's 10 to 1 for people who turn without using them to those who do.
Is this the case in your area?

Yes, my learners permit son does or he looses the right to drive for 24 hours. But I hear you and feel your pain.

What gets me is when they are putzing along, hit their brakes, then just as they start the turn they turn on the blinkers.
I've told new drivers that if they hit the brakes before the blinkers, they are bad drivers.
Just as bad are people who keep hitting their brakes for no reason, but that's for another thread.

Don't signal your intentions.....
If you turn on a signal, someone will try to get around you when you make your move.

Here in Texas,if you do not use them,,,you will be stopped IF the LEO sees you.
This is his chance to run your license plate and record, to look for "wants".
Most very small towns derive "income" this way.

Good. I can't stand when people do that, like they expect everyone else to only pay attention to them...

I've been to Boston serval times on business trips and "trust" me, to use a turn signal is a sign of WEAKNESS. Heck, I once had to see about taking a cab back to the airport. The cabbie told me he didn't want "the challenge"!

A a gear head I'm on a couple car forums and the turn signal thing is a popular thread.
Here is some of what I have picked up reading these threads
Like others have said in certain situations using your signal sets you up for some one to purposely block you or do some other stupid thing.
Also your turn signal attracts attention so if your speeding you are more apt to be noticed by the LEO. Change lanes a ways back from a bit of traffic and no one will notice.

I guess I'm one of the ten percenters. I always use my turn signals, even if there's no one there to see them.

In NM, turn signals are somewhat of a provocation.
And left lane driving is constitutionally protected.

Been a habit of mine since I was a kid. Even use it when I turn into a driveway.
If someone wants to make a dumb move or cut me off because I use a signal, let it be.
Same when I am in one of my "old" cars. I am usually driving much slower and since they are quite "small" in comparison to today's cars, I need to be careful.
I have never had an incident while driving the old cars. I guess folks are more considerate when they see an old fart driving a car older than the driver.
I guess instead of trying to cut me off, they are wondering what I am driving!

But do you use your turn signals when no one’s there to see?
If a tree falls in the forest and there’s no one there to hear, did it make a sound?

I see plenty of folks using them, but they use them all wrong. On the highway when changing lanes they flash the signals about two times when they are already 3/4 of the way into the other lane.
I also find in residential areas, the nicer the car, the less the owner needs to signal his direction. It also seems as though when you buy a Cadillac it comes with property rights to whatever ground it happens to be covering at the time.

Around my area-it's about 50-50-depending what section of town your in? If In a bad neighborhood area? the use of signals % goes way down-in better neighborhoods-% of usage goes way up.

Sadly, ive seen LEOS not do that here. They are more interested in busting "johns" looking for prostitutes, and anything else.

The guy behind you in the lane you want to move to sees and suddenly feels the need to speed up. Before your turn signal he was fine cruising way back there. They're like zombies. Zombies just mope around till they see/smell a human being. These guys are the same. They mope around in the back till they are awakened by your turn signal. Suddenly he has to be where you are or how world will come to an end

Ditto here. In fact, I have to actually be thinking about NOT doing it-to not do it-and ill still use them anyway. Force of habit that I cant and will not break.

While a good percentage of the older retirees use them, they sometimes use the wrong one.........they also tend to cross 3-4 lanes of traffic to get to a turn lane because "they forgot".....
BUT since these folks ALWAYS vote, any law trying to mandate eye, ear.reflex, and driving skills for them will NEVER pass.

About 50/50 here. Same with Stop signs. If you dont have a Stop Sign at an Intersection, you better slow down and look anyway.

Depends on where you are in this area.
If we're driving locally in the West Virginia mountains, more people out here signal than don't.
When we're in or close to a suburban or urban area, seems like most people don't have a clue about things like courtesy, signaling, right of way or even how to drive.
I always signal well before a turn. A lot of times when people do signal, they do it while they're turning.

It's pretty bad here in Phoenix as well. I'd say anywhere from 50%-75% of the time...drivers don't use turn signals or lane-changers. Drives me nuts. And I REALLY hate it when the Police don't use them! (Under "normal" conditions...not talking about emergency use)
My use of turn signals is almost entirely an involuntary action at this point. Passengers have occasionally chided me for turning on my turn signal when a street "runs-out", and the only option is to follow along to the left (or right, as the case may be) onto another street. There's no need to stop, it's essentially just a curve in the road...but because it's a 90-degree turn, and leaving one street to enter another...I just automatically use my turn signals.
I don't usually do this, but just the other day when I pulled *out* of my driveway onto the street...I used my turn signal. Just after I hit the turn-signal stalk, I wondered to myself, "Who do I imagine is going to see this...?"

Come on be reasonable..................
It's hard to use your turn signal when you've got your phone in one hand and are texting with the other ........... while making a left hand turn across 2 oncoming lanes of traffic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lately the thing that bugs me most: Going to the cabin..... I'm doing is about 75 in the center lane of the Pa Turnpike (posted speed is 70) I'm only on the Pike for 70 miles so no need to risk a ticket to save 5 minutes at most.....
anyway........ one guy is passing me on the left doing 80 and someone blows by me at 90 on the right!!!!!!!..... just to get caught behind the cars ahead doing 65. WTH!!!!!!!

When I'm on the Pa TP I set cruise control to 5mph over the limit and just cruise. What I find funny.....and I'm sure it's done subconsciously.....is when some guy passes me like I'm going backwards only 15 later I catch up and pass him still never touching my set speed on the cruise control. A long enough ride and you see the same people over and over...like playing leap frog!

Like others have said, using a turn signal seems to be an invitation from other drivers to speed up in an attempt to block you. My brother-in-law, who is pretty obnoxious in all other respects too, told me once that he uses his turn signal to indicate what he is GOING to do, and he doesn't care what anyone else thinks or tries to do...he will turn or change lanes when he wants. His job requires him to be in traffic most days, and amazingly he hasn't had a wreck yet. Me, I seem to be always dodging other drivers.
It was a lot worse back in my motorcycle riding days (haven't ridden since 2006.) I don't care who has the right of way by law, if a motorcycle and a car tangle the motorcycle is going to lose every time. That has made me a much more cautious automobile driver...that and getting older.

Here it's closer to 4 to 1, but still maddening when you're waiting to make a left and the one car coming at you making you wait then nonchalantly turns.

People here in Michigan don't need a turn signal because they already know where they are going.
The flip side of this is there are some people who would be better off not using their turn signal. These are the folks that are going to turn in a half mile, so they put on the signal. The thing is, they fake you out by passing any number of streets, gas stations, business parking lots, etc. before they finally turn.
Once I had some old coot put on his right turn signal while I was waiting at a side street stop sign. I assumed he was going to turn in to the gas station well to my left (or at worst, the side street I was on) so I checked traffic in the other direction and started to pull out. Just in time I looked back and could see he was going way too fast to make the turn so I stomped my brakes for all I was worth. He shot past me and pulled into a car dealership further down the street. His right turn signal was on the whole time.

I was following a police officer a while back, and saw him make a turn without signaling into the parking lot of a store. I considered stopping and pointing out that he should be setting an example, but then my better judgement kicked in, and I chose not to.
From my observation, turn signals are ignored ALMOST as much as the speed limit, or actually stopping (really stopping, not a rolling stop) for a stop sign.
I don't want to go off on a rant here, but, well, okay, I won't.

It is pretty bad here in the St. Louis area. You have to read the "body language" of their car. Next thing you know they have two wheels in your lane and on comes the signal. Sometimes they are just ****ing with their phones.
I worked with a guy whose wife would never use them. She said that if you do the other guy knows what you want to do. Duh! They are divorced now.

We had just left the Family Thanksgiving gathering last Thursday and was stopped on the 2 lane road waiting to turn left, with my left turn signal on. I noticed the pickup truck in the rear view mirror was not slowing down, as soon as the last oncoming vehicle came by I turned quickly and was able to get out of his way. I firmly believe that we would have been rear ended it I hadn't been able to get out of the way.
Thank God, He was watching over us.

There are some people that use them diligently. I have an elderly neighbor that has had hers on for about 6 months. *s*

I was surprised to learn as my granddaughter prepared for her road test, that hand signals are no longer taught or required knowledge for the road test. She had no concept of them.
I guess that means when my husband and I use hand signals (in conjunction with blinkers) while riding on his motorcycle, we might only confuse the nearby drivers.

I believe you can tell a lot about a person by the way they drive.
Do they only care about themselves? Or others as well?
Around here, there are some good people. But most of them only care about themselves. And it shows.

Goggle "crazy drivers". Pay attention to the Russians. Nobody gives an inch. You will drive in fear. I got a dash cam for protection.
I drive a big 150. Bright red with lots of chrome. People don't see it. 6000# of steel, glass, and rubber. People cut me off. I signal. I watch. I have no problems letting people in front of me and I have no intention of letting road rage ruin my day. I will obey all traffic laws, right to the point that I drop it into 4wd and drive over you, then back up over you.

I use to howl with mocking laughter at my dad for driving along with his turn signal blinking because he could not hear the continous click. This very day, my 13 year old said with a loud, disgusted sigh “dad you have been driving with your turn signal flashing for a mile—can’t you hear the beep?”

They think a bee has flown up your sleeve and you are trying to get him out.

Here in MA it is definitely the thing to do...no one uses turn signals, sign of weakness, never let anybody know where you are planning on driving.
They say we are the worst drivers in the USA....but I think NY/NJ drivers are the worst?

In the area I live in turn signals are not used and Stop Sign's are ignored by almost everyone also .. Both pet peeves of mine and my wife .. Have even seen the local LEO's in their police cars fail to stop and have observed them to be in the position to see violators and do nothing ..
Sadly the practice of not stopping has cost the lives of several people in the tri county area I live in .. Just 3 or 4 weeks ago another young woman with a small child in the car ignored a Stop Sign and was hit broad side and she was killed instantly .. the child was injured but survived .. about a year ago a 16 year old ran a stop sign killing 2 people ..

As someone posted earlier turn signals, particularly on high end luxury cars, are an option that most people don't purchase or don't know how to use.
mrmike7189, MA is not the only place it's perceived as a sign of weakness, Loop 610 in Houston is a prime example of that. hardcase60

I leave my turn signals on all the time to make up for those who don't ever use them! It all averages out.
Best,
Rick
