Shaft keeps his Detective Special in the freezer?!?
Someone please tell me why the heck he keeps his gun in the freezer? In the original Shaft movie, there is a point where he is at his pad and he opens his freezer and takes his nickel Detective Special out of a baggie and puts his blued one back in the bag and puts it into the freezer. Why in the world would you keep a gun in a freezer?? That can't be good for it? I've been around guns for 20 years now and I've never seen that. Rest assured I have absolutely no intention of putting my gun in my freezer EVER, I'm just curious why? I'm guessing since he pulls it out from behind something in the back that maybe he's just hiding it there thinking no one would ever look there, but is there something I'm unaware of??? I love the movie a LOT, the second one too, but I have never understood that. I do have to say though, that movie is what made me always want a pair of old school guns and I finally have achieved that. I have a nickel Model 36 and a blued 36, both are snubs, both have a square butt, both are no dash and both are pinned, in fact they are both from the 71-72 era. I feel like a kid in a candy shop. I can't decide which one to carry each day haha, I have to contemplate for a while. Thanks in advance for anyone who can offer up any reasoning for Shaft. I think he's either hiding it (which I can think of many better places) or it's just Hollywood being Hollywood.

"Can't decide which one to carry each day" ?
Are you familiar with the expression "New York reload", or its variant, the "Texas reload" ?

Ha! I have to say I've never heard of it, but I'm guessing it's when you run out of rounds in one gun, instead of reloading it, you just grab another haha. I don't want to say too much because I believe that the power of speech can be strong, but in short I don't want something to happen to both of them at the same time. If something has to happen, I'd rather lose one than both. I don't mean a self defense situation I mean other scenarios. Besides I feel like Shaft now and I have a gun at all times, but can swap it out for another one at my discretion.

Thanks you. That makes more sense than anything I've thought of. In fact it makes great sense because what cop would think to look there, but I still can't help but think he could've found somewhere better to hide it like cutting the center of a bunch of pages in a book and hiding it there or many other ideas. Waterproof bag in the tank of the toilet even. But yeah, that is most likely what it was for, though he did out his other in the same bag and put it in the freezer.

Haha, I like that. Guess you couldn't call that one a heater. Maybe that's what they mean when they say "cold steel."

When I lived in NYC I was always looking for a good place to hide my off duty in case of a break in. I did try the freezer once. Only once , it came out too cold to touch, and when it warmed up it started to sweat from the condensation and horrible humidity in NYC. I had to give it a full clean and oil, side plate off and everything. I found a better hiding place after that.

Shaft was always billed as a rebel who did his own thing. I'm thinking the producers just wrote it in to make him different and "cool". They don't know anything about guns. I remember Cobra kept his cleaning kit in an egg carton in his fridge. He racked the slide, stuck a bore brush down the barrel from the front and that was it. Just to make him look like a trained killer.

Hiding a gun in the freezer is more clever than hiding a key under the doormat or nearest flower pot. What miscreant would think to look there?

Everyone knows the book and toilet trick. No one ever thinks to look inside the refrigerator.
What exactly would happen to the gun if kept inside a freezer? May have to do an experiment

Guarantee you that when the Mexican police search a house, the fridge and freezer get a thorough going over, and anything edible leaves with the team.

Cops do. With a fair amount of success, I might add. Inside the box spring, under the mattress, is also popular. Once found a whole person in a hotel box spring, along with a pistol in the toilet tank . . .

I'M JUST TALKIN BOUT SHAFT.
Hollywood nonsense by writers that know nothing about guns. Right off the bat, congealed oil/condensation/rust come to mind. You guys are aware Shaft was a fictional character, right? "I feel like" Shaft, Rambo, 007, Dirty Harry, Fred Flintstone. A "good" search should include just about EVERYWHERE. Anywhere with quick/easy access to the owner "shouldn't" take long for an experienced searcher to find. Granted some hides are better/more clever than others but ovens/toilets/beds/asst appliances, NAH.

I got a maintenance call one night at 11PM. The Drug Taskforce, had raided one of the apartments and shot the deadbolt off the door! (The little inside knob of the lock flew across the room, 2 or 3 inches in front of the dirtbag's face, and buried in the dining room wall, "lucky miss") When I got there they were searching everywhere including in the freezer! and inside the frozen burritos! A uniformed officer I knew ask if I could think of any places to look. I said "Did anyone look under the stove deck?" 2 of the DEA guys walked back into the kitchen, and came out smiling! My friend ask how I knew to look there? I explained I found money hidden there all the time on service calls! That is the second best hiding place I found in 40 years of finding hidden stuff in moved out/evicted apartments!

My brother-in-law, whose IQ is barely above the high temp on a mild day, proudly showed me his hidden key device: a plastic rock with a space to hide a key inside. He had it on his porch, next to the door...and of course, not another rock, real or fake, anywhere in sight.

At another house some years ago, I also used one of those hollow plastic rocks for hiding keys in the back yard. But it was mixed in with similar-appearing real rocks in a flower bed surrounding a tree.

See, that would make sense...but a single rock (and a plastic one to boot) on a porch with nothing else just screams "hidden key here!"

Haha, that's a trip. My back window on my truck always looks shut, but it doesn't actually latch. I had to get a new back window because a girl's jealous bf busted out my front and back windshield once upon a time, so I keep a spare for my truck, my home and a couple other important keys hidden inside my truck just in case and I've needed every key on that ring at some point.

My friend ask how I knew to look there? I explained I found money hidden there all the time on service calls! I worked with a cop who lived in the housing projects. She used to keep her gun in the broiler part of the oven since she never cooked. One time she did cook and she forgot her gun was in there. Cooked up the stocks on her model 64.
Course, she is an idiot.

I kept a spare key for my truck in one of those magnetic boxes attached to the inside of a fender.
It stayed there for years and never was used.
Then, one day, I locked my key ring in the truck, took the magnetic box off the truck, retrieved the spare key and let myself into the truck. No problem.
I put the spare key and the magnetic box in my jacket pocket, figuring to reinstall it on the fender later.
Later that same day, I again locked my key ring in the truck -- but this time I locked my jacket and the spare key in with it.
Had to call a locksmith.

Oohh noooo!! Wow, that is unfortunate. I think I'd avoid keeping a gun in a place that if forgotten would cause a serious problem like that. Did the round that was lined up with the barrel happen to go off??

Ooooh noooo, that sucks! That sounds like something I would do!! I had one on my truck as well and I was afraid to put it under the truck for fear of it falling off somehow, so I tucked it inside the lip of the rim of the bed of my truck so if it did fall it would fall into the bed, and it did fall, just once but it did. Otherwise it stayed there very well and served me many times, but for some reason I don't have it anymore, and haven't for years, don't know own what happened. Now I just keep it in my truck as my back window doesn't latch it only appears shut, I just slide it open and reach inside.

Are you familiar with the expression "New York reload", or its variant, the "Texas reload" ?

As opposed to the Chicago reload, which is a backup RPG.
