STUMBLED ONTO A VERY GOOD INEXPENSIVE BOURON
I have been trying "new to me" Bourbons lately and it was recommended that I try one called Larceny. Lately I have been drinking my Bourbon neat in Norlan glasses and have found that the $23.99 price of Larceny is unbelievable for a quality Bourbon. Not saying it's the best I have or have ever tried, just saying for the price it is excellent!! If you like Bourbon and don't want to spend a bundle, try Larceny.

I don't care what people think or how
bad they might view me after this posting
but I've had a lot of Bourbons over the
decades.
And to me, the nicest, perhaps a bit sweet,
is the original plain old Jim Beam.
Price is right, taste is right.

Read the Larceny label! It's all about a Treasury Dept. Special Agent during Prohibition that helped himself to the Bourbon that was confiscated = hence the name Larceny.

The story how Larceny bourbon came to be named is quite funny.
It starts with Old Fitzgerald, the flagship wheated bourbon of Pappy van Winkle’s Stitzel-Weller distillery in Shively, KY. The marketing story, which Pappy had bought with the brand in the 1940s, told of an old-time distiller John Fitzgerald.
When Stitzel-Weller, which is to bourbon history what the pyramids are to Egyptian history, went under and the brands were sold in the 1990s, Old Fitzgerald and its story ended up with Heaven Hill in Louisville, makers of Evan Williams and Elijah Craig.
Then a descendant of Pappy, Sally Van Winkle Campbell, published a delightful biography of Pappy in which it was revealed that the whole Fitzgerald story was ox poop. John Fitzgerald was no distiller, but a corrupt revenue agent who had a knack for stealing the best whiskey.
Heaven Hill decided to roll with the punch, and created a premium bottling of the Old Fitzgerald recipe under the new name Larceny. If you look, you’ll still find Fitzgerald’s name on the bottle, and the key which, as a revenue agent, gave him access to the warehouses.

I do drink Dickel #12 and it's very smooth and flavorful - some say it's a little too sweet but that's personal thing. I believe just as Jack Daniels, it's not a true Bourbon because it is Charcoal filtered. That said, I like all of them. Even though Maker's is a true bourbon, it tastes very similar to Jack.

Maker’s is a wheated bourbon (no rye), just like Larceny, which does make those sweeter and closer to the low-rye Tennessee whiskeys than the higher-rye bourbons.
As for Daniels, Dickel, and the “true bourbon” thing, here you will find the definite answer:

Chief,
You are correct sir, Jack & George are Tennessee Sour Mash, anything coming out of Kentucky are Kentucky Straight Bourbons. Both whiskey.
Update: Absalom beat me to it!! LOL

Chief, Thanks for another bourbon thread. Heaven Hill puts out some great product in the $30 and under range. Elijah Craig,Evan Williams single barrel,Larceny and my personal favorite, Henry McKenna Single barrel. I tried the Larceny and it was ok. Gave what was left of that bottle to a fellow gun club member that hadn't got to try it yet. Any other sleepers out there?

I used to regularly drink I W Harper but it isn't available in Arizona. A very smooth bourbon at a reasonable price.

For a good, inexpensive bourbon we keep Elijah Craig on hand.
Buffalo Trace is also reasonable.

I wonder whatever happened to "Black Powder" Kentucky Bourbon (it had a cannon on the label)? I bought a bottle at the local Wine, Spirits and More store maybe three years ago but haven't seen it there recently. I'm not much into whiskey, I go more for gin. But I usually keep some at the house for those who are, like my mother-in-law. She used to love "Rebel Yell," she being from the deep South, which I also haven't seen for many years. Maybe it's too politically incorrect now. We lived in Ohio back then, and it wasn't sold there. We had to go across the river into (Maysville) Kentucky to get it.

The Ur-Ban legend goes something like this.
Prohibition was the law of the land and the US liquor makers were mostly out of business.
So a Kentucky outfit call Waterfill and Frazier decided to go make whiskey in Mexico .
Years ago , I have bought it in Mexico.
I heard several different stories, like after prohibition was over the Mexicans refused to stop making it.
But in any case, it was cheap Mexican American ‘style’ Whiskey.

I lived in Laredo TX for about 18 months. From what I have been told, Prohibition essentially did not exist there. Laredo and Nuevo Laredo are noted for their efficient and effective smuggling methods. I suspect things are much the same for El Paso/Juarez. I have been to the Kentucky Club several times. I wouldn't go across the border anywhere today.

The border towns are fine. Interior, not so much.
Bourbon is like cigars. You're going to pay a little more for a good one. I smoke $3 cigars and drink Jim Beam. Occasionally someone will give me something better but I rarely buy it for myself. There's rent to be paid and the kids need shoes in the winter.

My second home is near Del Rio/Cd. Acuna, and I used to cross the RG frequently. No reason to today. Most of the places in Cd. Acuna's downtown area were closed down the last time I was there (no more Gringo visitors), and many of the businesses have moved to the US side. Visiting the Wal Mart in Del Rio is an interesting experience. Sort of like half the population of Mexico is there.

I have not heard of Black Powder bourbon, but Rebel Yell was another one of Pappy Van Winkle’s brands. Same wheated bourbon recipe as Old Fitzgerald that I discussed above. The label was specifically created for sale only in the states of the old Confederay in the late 40s or early 50s. In other words, pure marketing.
In 1984, it went national. The rebel soldier on the label morphed first into a generic cowboy figure and then just into some wheat stalks; there’s your political correctness. But the brand is now owned by Luxco and contract-distilled at the New Bernheim distillery in Louisville by Heaven Hill.
Here in Oregon it’s widely available. They just came out with an excellent Rebel Yell Single Barrel 10-Year-Old.

Always looking for a good bourbon, recommendations from fellow bourbon drinkers (not reviewers or aficianados) are always welcomed. I may have to try Larceny, sounds like a winner.

Thanks! Haven't run across it yet, but, like the one-eyed ****** from Jacksonville, I'll keep an eye out.
Another good bourbon that happens to be inexpensive is Evan Williams.

That is absolutely true. I've been drinking it for about a year. I was kind of hoping the word wouldn't get out. Costco has 1.75 ml for $33-ish.

Evan Williams is from Haven Hill and it has a lower price point. It is a smooth bourbon, It has a I think it could be a wheated bourbon. They also release a a single barrel 10 years bottle. So much bourbon so little time.

I like to drink my bourbon whisky neat, i.e. room temperature with NO water and NO ice, 2-3 fingers, how God intended whisky to be drank!!!
And NO shots!!! Any whisky worth drinking should never be taken as a shot, yet sipped and savoured.

G. Dickle #8 is a fair to middling sour mash.
I would say it's better than Beam and about the same price.

For inexpensive bourbons two of my favorites are J.T.S. Brown and Rebel Yell. I just found out from this thread that they are both bottled by Heaven Hill!

Yes, but New Bernheim is a huge distillery, they cook different recipes, and I can assure you that you’re not drinking the same stuff from two differently labeled bottles
And for anyone not tired of my nerdy whiskey history:
The original J.T.S. Brown distillery is now Four Roses. Brown was the half-brother of George Garvin Brown, who was the first to sell bourbon only in sealed bottles starting in 1870 and founder of Brown-Forman, nowadays owners of the Jack Daniel’s, Woodford Reserve, and Old Forester distilleries.
