Like a gun. It's in between the ears that counts.

The best way to use one is to let my yard man do it.

You need to see that video. The ending will make that very clear.

Kevlar chaps, in my opinion, are a must. (Not that I use a chainsaw myself, but I gave some kevlar chaps to a pal some years ago who decided he knew how to use one after a long career as a desk jockey.)
That first video is impressive!
Man, that second video.... Great example of “A man’s got to know his limitations...”

I learned the proper way to use a chainsaw and how to fell trees at an early age, and safety equipment was never an option. Very few things can do more damage to yourself in less time than a chainsaw. It is almost hard to believe that anyone can buy one and use it without some serious instruction...there are a thousand things that can go wrong, and even a small tree can kill you. As for those backyard warriors cutting from a ladder with shorts and tennis shoes on....Darwin will prevail, I guess.

Upsets me when I see someone doing something foolish.
I grew up running saws, and was a "sawyer" when at Texas A&M.
This photo shows me a tree TOO CLOSE to the house, and only a PRO with lots of experience should drop this tree.
1. send a sawyer up into the tree and bring down branches on a rope sling.
Have a pull rope attached high up and to a pull truck headed away.
Walkie talkie for communication.
An experienced tree removal company faces this type of tree removal all the time.

Unbelievable, some of the people in this video had to have been severely injured or killed.

I've had trees very near the house removed. I was happy to pay for people who had the knowledge and skill to do it right.

My favorite chainsaw movie was based on Wilbur Smith's book,"The Train From Katanga."
I think the US film title was "Africa Ablaze" and maybe another title, too. "Dark of the Sun"? It starred Rod Taylor and Yvette Mimieux.
The villain chased the hero with a chainsaw. Ads in the newspaper and magazines showed the chainsaw event.
I really liked the book and the movie.
In the book, Smith wrote of the bad guy, "It was the measure of Wally Hendry that he had been in the Congo for six months and spoke not a word of French."
Several of his books have become movies.
Here's his site:

Back in high school me and a friend were cutting firewood. His chainsaw kicked back and hit him in the face. Ouch! That left a scar.

I learned to use a chain saw correctly when I was 13.
Rule #1:
Never try to juggle 'em.

Two weeks ago, a man I know well and his son in law were cutting down a tree. I don’t know the details other than the SIL was struck by the tree and killed instantly.

I took down a large dead tree near my house several years ago. I first tied a 200 ft nylon rope about 20 ft up the tree and the other end to my tractor, cut a deep notch in the direction I wanted it to fall and cut it most of the way through then tightened up the tractor and down it come. Used most of the tree for firewood and in my BBQ smoker. Been using a chain saw for 55 years.

Forty-years ago, I used to make a living with a Poulan - Bow, Speed Saw.
I made sure both my boys went to college.
By the way, there was no such thing as safety gear down here, back then.

He was using a Stihl chain saw. I noticed after the 2011 Bastrop wildfire the FEMA guys came in to cut down the dead trees near roads and residences. every one of them had Stihl chain saws.

Several years ago my wifes uncle was in his 50s and had sawmilled and farmed all his life wanted to cut a big Oak beside his hog pen. It was on the side of a hill and the hog pen was above the tree. He put a chain up in the tree and a 4020 John Deere down hill and pulled till the tractor started spinning and locked it down. He cut the tree and it fell backwards and slid the tractor up the hill and mashed the hog pen flat. He just laughed and said it was probably time to build another pen. Larry

Some people should never be allowed near chainsaws. My late father-in-law drove an ambulance for a volunteer rescue squad. He picked up two men at different times the same week that had been up a tree and had sawed off the limbs they were sitting on.
