Default American Holly Grips?

Does anyone have experience with American Holly (wood) grips? Seems to be an alternative to ivory and even yellows with age. Looks good in pictures, but how does it do in the real world? Does it hold up on a field gun?

Thanks!

-Jay

I currently have 2 revolvers with American Holly grips on them. Unfortunately I can't comment about their durability for field use as mine just go from the safe to the backyard range.

They sure are an eye catcher to me though.

I have been curious myself.

Wonder if dirty hands and powder residue gets into or stains the wood at all.

The reason Gibson Guitars uses holly veneer on their head stocks is because it accepts black dye so readily.

The finish on mine, maybe a type of Tru-Oil, protects the wood from my greasy, powder stained hands just fine. I sometimes don't remove them when I use Hoppes #9 and there isn't a problem there.

I've got a SAA that has American Holly wood grips on it. They have held up well through several matches. They have yellowed a little bit since I took this picture. Grimy hands don't seem to phase the finish.

Looks good! Seems the cost for these grips is close to $200 a pair... cheaper than ivory buy not cheap! Maybe some Jay Scott $25 faux stags are in order??

Those are beauties. They do look an awful lot like ivory, and worth the money.

I have a set of smooth N-frame cokes made by him. Most expensive of the four sets he has made for me, but well worth it.
