Default Mission BBQ

My family took me out for a belated father's day dinner tonight at our not-so-local Mission BBQ. Needless to say, our visit was a success ... so much so, that it knocked Cracker Barrel out of the must stop at venues when I travel. The food was not only great with generous servings, the atmosphere was comforting. It is now on my "must visit when traveling" list.

The problem is, chances are very good that when traveling, I will travel carrying concealed ... something I am not permitted to do in New Jersey. A quick Google search while in the restaurant failed to yield their corporate policy on concealed carry. Fortunately, the manager was very accessible and accommodating. She advised that corporate policy permitted guests to carry concealed, as allowed by state law.

Chalk up another gun friendly business!

We have one here in Richmond and while I’ve never looked into their ccw policy (as I ccw anyway) I can say they have pretty tasty BBQ. It’s been a while so I think I need to make a trip back there this summer.

Yeah there's a couple of them up here in NoVA that are great for both food and atmosphere. Anywhere with that variety of sauces is a good call in my food book.

A buddy of mine and I stopped at our local Mission for lunch the other day, about 1145 or so. Right at 1200, they switched over the TV's and asked everyone to stand to sing the national anthem. And they are always doing things for vets, so they are definitely okay with me.

What were you going to do if they hadn't been quite so friendly about it?

Decent BBQ, love the Tupelo Honey and Gator Bite sauces and a stand up corporate policy that supports organizations from the USO to local FOP's. They'll get my business.

Several of my customers use Mission BBQ as a catering service for their open house! Mission does it right... pull in with a military surplus 6x6 truck and proceed to serve up great food

My veteran cousin in Boynton Beach FL took us to the Mission BBQ near him so we could visit with his daughter that works there and have some lunch. Good food and atmosphere, and that military truck was there also.

After seeing this post, decided yesterday to go get lunch, after shooting at the rifle range.
Well I ordered the pulled pork, found it little dry, there french fries and baked beans were delicious along with corn bread.
The plaza they are located has in front of there store, Vet parking only, which I thought was nice touch, and seeing the spot empty while the rest of the parking lot was full, I guess people give the courtesy to leave them empty for Vets. Guess were I parked?

I have never heard of them, but Google says there's one up the road in Louisville. So I will be trying them out for sure! I grew up in western Ky, and my first paying job outside of hauling hay and mowing lawns, was at a BBQ joint, working in the pits. I smelled like BBQ almost 24 hrs a day back then, and actually got burned out on it for a few years.

Our BBQ sandwiches have to have slaw on them. What about the rest of America?

I have eaten BBQ with slaw in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia. I like BBQ sandwiches with and without.

I prefer mine with slaw. Some of the best bbq I have eaten was at Moonlight BBQ in Owensboro, KY. Low and slow bbqed mutton.

I envy anyone who lives near there. With all the many sides and desserts they offer, If you leave there hungry, it's your fault.

We’ve had one in Fort Myers for a few years now. I eat lunch there a couple of times a month when I’m working in the area. I visited my son up at FSU last year to take in a game and I took him to the local Mission in Tally. He loved it and has gone a few times by himself and taken dates there since then.

soFlaNative and onebadvet... do you ever go to Shorty’s? I still love that place and try to get there for bbq when I work down there.

Some of my earliest memories are at Shorty's in So Dade. I haven't been there in better than 50 years but they opened one in Davie Fl and I was there all of the time until I moved up here. I love the place.

Have not heard of mission BBQ, that being said, I usually try not to
eat at the chains. I try to find the little BBQ joints that all the locals
go and have to stand in line to get in, serving on wax paper or paper
plates, there are a few exceptions but most of the time not.
It has to be wood fired smoked, no electric cookers or no boiling the
meat before hand. If I can't see wood smoke or smell the place a block
away, forget about it. Call me a BBQ snob if you wish.

Mine too. We lived on SW 79th Ave., just a couple of miles from Shorty’s and my parents took us there at least a couple of times a month. I’d be afraid to go that far south anymore. The one you’re talking about in Davie on University and Stirling is the one I go to when I’m working in Ft. Lauderdale area.

Shorty's Davie locale is good. Great sweet tea.
Did a take out years ago, sauce was in a Styrofoam container.
Got it home, told my oldest it was chocolate pudding. He was maybe 5.
Took a big ol' spoonful...GAAA!
Been paying me back ever since. Serves me right.

Many moons ago, down in Mexico, a waitress sat a bowl of sauce in front of one of my associates.
He also thought it was soup.
Well it wasn't!
He took a spoon full and had a very strange reaction!
We kidded him about that for a long time!

I travel for my job almost every week. Monday through Friday. I rarely will eat at a chain restaurant unless it is a place that a customer suggest when I take them out
I enjoy eating with locals and have found some great places the only thing keeping me from doing a TV show about it is I do not own a Camaro convertible

Today I found myself working in Clarksville Tennessee. At lunchtime I looked for my options and found a mission barbecue! A head of me was a group of six military personnel, when each one received their food they also received a handshake from employees behind the counter. At exactly 12 o’clock Everyone was asked, and did, to stand for the national anthem the TV screens were turned to a picture of the US flag and the national anthem was played.

I also noticed the staff bringing out free dessert to the military personnel
I have eaten at maybe a dozen events that Mission had catered but I had never eaten at a mission restaurant

I would encourage anyone here to eat at a mission barbecue when they have the opportunity

Also never heard of it.
But if I’m back East, Yes!
I’ll try it.
