WiFi Extender
Our router is upstairs. We often have to go outside to use our cell phones.
Techie grandson said we need a WiFi extender or a newer router. Our router is about five years old.
Recommended brand/model router or extender?

I've been happy building computers with ASUS Motherboards, so when my Apple Router died a couple of years ago, I got an ASUS Router (AC88U). My range and throughput was vastly improved. They also make Extenders.

Don't know how deep you want to go, but we started using the Google WiFi pod system a few years ago with great results. We have a pod (one of which serves as the router) on all three levels of our home. We cut the cord and stream all of our TV and computer needs problem-free. I believe the system cost around $250. If you only need a one or two pod set up the cost goes down accordingly.

A new router may or may not help. Not sure if you are having probs with cellular call or internet reception.
I have a home in a rural area and can only get internet on cellular band. Took a while and some research to find a cellular modem that now provides great internet but in order to use my cell phones reliably, I needed to go outside like you.
I picked up a cellular "booster/amplifier" (X-Boost brand?) dedicated to cellular bands only and phones have been great ever since. I use a Netgear extender for extended wifi range foe internet connection and it works beyond the immediate home area.
This was over 7 or 8 years ago and still going strong.
Generally, your cell phone may not use wi-fi as a connection for voice calls, it uses wifi when you use the browser for internet viewing.
My situation only,do a little research as technology may have advanced beyond my setup.

When you say you have to go outside to use your cell phone, are you talking about not being able to connect to your router for internet on your cell phone or is it that you cannot make cell phone calls in the house? The equipment for each use is totally different.

I would first try a new router.
Then maybe a WiFi extender.
Cell use on WiFi?
Sure you can.
Flip the shiny switches!
To turn yours on, go to the Settings menu. On iPhones go to Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling and then toggle on Wi-Fi Calling on This Phone. On Android, you'll generally find WiFi settings under Settings > Networks & Internet > Mobile network > Advanced > Wi-Fi Calling, where you can then toggle on WiFi calling.

I got an extender for my old router. It was trouble.
Since the router was old model I upgraded to a high end Netgear router.
My Samsung connects to WiFi internet while grilling outside, no problem.

You might want to look at the Netgear Orbi Mesh system. Which model would depend on the size of your house and the Network Speed you get from your provider.
I used to only buy Linksys, but a couple of years ago we got an Apple AirPort Extreme, and it is by far the best Router we’ve ever had. Since they don’t make these anymore I’m looking at mesh systems. Here’s what we get from Charter Spectrum on our Wifi...and the AirPort Extreme gives excellent WiFi coverage to all areas, except the external Ring Cameras which I had to boost with range extenders.

I should have qualified my post, but not for all as I understand it. Not all areas of the country have LTE service and some cell phone carriers offer it as an extra fee service. Depends on where you live. We only have it up here in the north country for Verizon and ATT, but of course I cannot get a signal from the ATT tower anyway.
Current 4G LTE service coverage is
Verizon: 70% 4G coverage
AT&T: 68% 4G coverage
T-Mobile: 62% 4G coverage
Sprint: 27% 4G coverage

If you have a long way to go and nothing wired is possible, get a point to point WiFi device to get a connection out there then add an AP. And don't forget to use vpn to protect your data. Here is more info https://veepn.com/what-is-vpn. It's the easiest wayt to stay safe online.
