Official Surveillance Unit at Lowes
Saw one of this in the Lowes parking lot! Solar panels had some kind of announcement repeating over and over in English and Spanish. At least 4 big cameras,
Gee hope someone doesn't hook up the trailer hitch and steal it!
Right out of Robo Cop or similar movie!

when I worked in Ft. Collins the city put one those radar trailers on one of the streets I used to go home. one day on the way home from work the radar trailer had been torched to the point that the tires were completely gone.

I believe that these are used for surveillance in parking lots that are not fully covered by cameras mounted to the building (or if those cameras are not working). In that instance it's actually a liability thing for the business - one of the reasons nobody likes personal injury attorneys until they need one themselves. Of course, the local PD could be using it with their automated tag and registration reading software - but it would be unusual for them to be doing so on private property.

I've seen these at construction sites around tool trailers and material piles until the electric construction temp service is energized. But I've never heard one make an annoucement.

The local Wal-Marts have very similar things in their parking lots, video cameras on a much taller mast. They are called "Lot Cops." But they don't talk.

The Costco in north Austin on Research Blvd has one of those as well.
There are (or were) four fixed versions near Beale Street in downtown Memphis when I was there back in 2013. I was there during the day and saw and decided I had no reason to go back at night.

Probably. They have cameras that can tilt, pan, zoom in and are more than likely watched by someone at a remote monitoring station.

Whats hilarious is that around here there are these little 1/2 acre plots with a high chain link fence around them. If you drive up to the gate there is this Nifty US government property sign on them. They are nuclear missile sites.
Whats funny about that? They don't have as many cameras as amost Walmart parking lots.

Looking at that power pole I hope the mast doesn't deploy automatically and/or reach too high.

You must not get out much. There are very few places you can go in this country now where you are not on camera much or most of the time. Certainly, every mall and big box store has a camera system. Airports, rail stations, some bars and restaurants, schools...you name it, a camera will be there.
I don't care for the loss of privacy, but there's nothing you can do...the technology is here to stay. Besides, a lot of people like those cameras: They exonerate employees falsely accused by customers of wrongdoing, they've led to arrests in many crimes; and when used in drones, they enable no-risk inspections of power lines and buildings.
Just make sure you're smiling, and it will be fine...

I think I'll build a fake one and park it at my pond to discourage trespassers. Maybe some Claymore mines also.

You might think so, if they manage to find the missile site. Driving down a gravel road one day I was stopped by some of the air forces finest. Asked me if i knew where missile site xyz was. They were suppose to to be there. Really. Four people. $100,000+ hummer and a mounted machine gun and you can't find your missile. Now thats funny right there.
You can drive by lots of them and there is no one around. You do see hummers and their pickups around quite a bit. Sometimes whole strings of them going down the road.
But, the also, they occasionally get lost get, stuck, etc.
I have seen people there when they are doing stuff. But, 99% of the time there is no one around them and there are LOTs of them around here. See the "black helicopters" too.
I just keep wondering about the city kids from California that get stuck up here in the middle of nowhere in the winter. LOL
My point was that that conglomeration of stuff and the trailer for a parking lot vs a missile site. Thee parking deal bristles. The missile site, not so much.

Oh I just drive by them i could care less but they only have a camera pole in one corner. I do know kids used to throw beer can in the fence then drive away knowing security would eventually show up. The big concrete slabs are the real security

Long as you on your own property or on a highway your good around here. Not that many cameras and our state Supreme Court has ruled that a nature call on the highway is not a crime. More like a necessity around here. Lots of miles with no pit stops.
Don't want to see somebody taking a leak in there yard. Don't look in THEIR yard. Whats going on there is NOT your business.

Nobody cares whether you take a ill conceived leak or not . . . now, not wearing your government mandated mask, they'll take you and your whole family to the gulag.

In many cases the missile silos are only known by the fence and the heavy utility wire take off poles. The AF will not locate their control wires which run out of the fence but will scream and throw a hissy fit if you happen to find one with a backhoe while legally digging up your own lines.
I doubt there is a camera anywhere in the county I live in other than the jail and maybe the courthouse.

They can and usually are monitored remotely. See the antenna on top? The post can be raised another 15-20 feet.
Local LEO uses one that’s more elaborate. More cameras. A generator and a backup generator. Both of which can be turned off and on remotely. And I suspect some kind of audio monitoring.

They've been using these things for at a number of years. With all the property crimes I see them at WalFarts, and Home Depoos. They even have flashing blue and red LEDs! I wonder if they're actually functioning or just for show.
In all honesty, I don't think anyone pays attention them or is much of a deterrent. Crime still happens in the lots and by the time PD shows up, they are long gone.
The local PD has them, too. They move them around.

This is an example of technology replacing humans in security guard or officer positions. These units are leased out and remotely monitored and are on 24/7/365. Not a deterent per se, but more reliable than the human element.
About a decade ago, most construction sites and shopping center parking lots were patrolled by security officers who were just as likely (or more) to be a crime statistic on the job as anyone else. Poorly paid, sometimes these people wouldn't even be on their post or would be asleep or goofing off. The use of these units...as well as the growing market for robots in the security field...do away with that and for a similar billing rate to the customer.
These devices are monitored remotely and record, can "yell" at violators, etc. If the monitor sees suspicious activity, he or she records the video and makes a phone call. Simple, effective, reliable.
These units can and are vandalized on a fairly regular basis depending on their location. Thefts are not that common simply because it is difficult to get rid of these things, even by stipping them for parts. Most have standard tracking devices built in.
A lot of security guard agencies are looking into these or are marketing them themselves...and eliminating the human element to a great extent.
Expect to see a lot more of these, especially in public areas such as parks, street corners, etc.

They are functioning. They are also for show. No, they aren't a deterrent and not a lot of people even notice them (that is the point regardless of all the lights). Remember the purpose of a security officer is to "observe and report" and that is what these things do.

I assume those sites are still active. There are a bunch of decommissioned Minuteman sites in the Cheyenne River Breaks, north of Wall, SD. A friend had a family cattle ranch there, where he had grown up.we used to go out there three or four times a year to ride dirt bikes, shoot, chase cattle during the fall roiudup, brand them in the spring, drink whiskey and eat red meat.
One year, my friend’s parents went in with a few other couples to buy the decomissioned launch control center for the ten silos in the immediate area. It was an interesting facility with a couple of buildings. It sat on maybe a couple of acresg surrounded by a 20 ft chain link fence. It was a seven-mile ride across a neighboring ranch.
We would ride over and hang out for an hour or two, fantasizing about whether it would be feasible to put on a motorcycle rally there, or a rock concert. The location was remote, but sat in some beautiful country.
In his youth, as the story goes, the rancher and his buddies might drive into a missile site and do donuts on the concrete pad. They had about 20 minutes before a security vehicle would come out. They never got caught, but they only tried it a couple of times before the novelty wore off, or something.

They can talk if they want them to, the Walmart I went to that had those "Lott Cops" strewn about were blathering COVID-19 social distancing "reminders"... reminded me very much of a futuristic sci-fi movie from the 70's/80's where "big brother" is heard in the background announcing conformity rules to the unwashed masses.

I notice that a lot of the crime shows, especially in Britain, depict a heavy reliance on CCTV. Even on a show like Shetland, set on a fairly remote and lightly populated island, cameras seem to be everywhere.

Stuff like this is why I don’t live in a big city. Interesting that like most cool things the government outlaws toy drones so we can’t see them but they use them and units like this to track us. If you don’t like business using them, stop supporting the businesses that use them.

Ya, the sites around here are active. There is one just a couple miles from my house and just about any gravel or asphalt road in a 50-60 mile radius has some. Like I said a high chain link fence, a pole in one corner and a read while and blue US property sign. I have never even left the main road to drive up to the gate. Usually only about 100 yds or less to the gate. See them playing musical sites sometimes. Big semi shows up with a bunch of Hummers with the machine gun mounted, several security pickups and usually some choppers. Also see them doing stuff at times inside the fences. They have a couple small remote barracks/control centers around and the main base is in Great Falls. You see the troops in their little berets getting stuff in the store and gas stations. They never got guns on them and lots of the citizens here do. NIf they do have handguns they must leave them and holsters with the guy who stays with the Hummer. Actually anymore I don't pay that much attention, It is just another part of the scenery here. Here there are almost no security cameras even in the stores. Crime is pretty low around here. Some "Vandals did, put makeup, eye lashes and red paint on the toe nails and a necklace on the Sinclair dinosaur in Stanford though.
Sometimes I wonder if the government keeps some kind of loose file on the people around here though. Once I was coming back from a job in Cal. Wanted to see the Hoover dam. There was a security check point, Truck had canopy, big tool box and totes of work clothes etc. Homeland Security guy started having me dig through it and open stuff. Gonna be a pain. Just started and a heavy showed up. Said "You from Fergus county?" I said "Ya, Lewistown". He looked at the guard and said "Let him go". That was it. Made me wonder about some stuff. LOL

Observation. I've seen those suckers high in the sky over southern Arizona.
The parking lot surveillance cart isn't 15,000 ft. in the air. The aerostat has a surveillance range of 250 miles.
