Great movie. In my ever so humble opinion, Robert Ryan is one the greatest actors to ever appear on screen.

Robert Ryan was in a few mediocre films, but even those are worth watching if you're a Robert Ryan fan. He was certainly one of the best of his era.
"Bad Day at Black Rock" was directed by the very best of the action movie directors - John Sturges.

The year this film was made, perpetual bad guy Ernest Borgnine was seen leaving the “Bad Day“ Desert film location in Lone Pine. Star Spencer Tracy half joked about why that guy got to leave town. Borgnine had an appointment to audition for a part in a throw away movie a couple writers gave the studio to finish their contract. He got the part and won an Oscar for best actor playing “Marty”. One of the guys he beat was Spencer Tracy. Nominated for “Bad Day At Black Rock”.

I've seen the movie several times over the years. What is basically a run of the mill mystery was turned into something special by a cast that would go on to become a whos-who list of Hollywood greats. Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan, Anne Francis, Dean Jagger, Walter Brennan, Lee Marvin, and Ernest Borgnine.
It also addressed racism at a time when such things just weren't done. Good movie that tends to stick in your memory.

Sturges is one of my favorite directors. I have this film in my DVD collection. The best thing about it to me is the feeling of post-war rural southwest, I just love the look of it.

Not only Robert Ryan but Ernest Borgnine, and Lee Marvin and one of my favorite rolls for Spencer Tracy. He taught me in this movie never EVER to pick a fight with a one armed man.

Yeah, the same "one-armed man" in "The Fugitive" TV Series.

That I think is one of Spencer Tracy's better movies. He was a good actor. A couple of his other better movies to me are Boys Town, Desk Set and Judgement At Nuremberg.

All the movies Spence made with Katherine Hepburn were great. You could almost see the sparks flying when they were together on screen. I remember one scene where he pushed half a grapefruit in her face. And incredible scene for that time.
