Anyone ever had Red Eye? I have been after a SECRET recipe from a friends Dad for 25 years (he is very tight lipped and so is his only remaining son). Still no luck. Son has never made it as he just asks Dad to make him a batch. He is a native of Glen Ullin, ND (eastern ND). I have made several batches over the years. Even a red eye contest several years ago with him. Very close he says.

Kind of settled with this recipe over the years. Germans from Russia Heritage Collection

Found this one, tried it and really like it for caramel taste but to sweet. https://www.genealogyjourney.net/make-hochzeit-schnapps-home/

Looking for a good recipe if anyone has one. Believe me I have scoured the internet. It's like asking the Baldwin sisters on the Walton's Mountain for the "recipe"

The stuff must be very potent, it brings to mind the fraternity house special recipe high octane concoctions.

I like chocolate chip cookies.

(Sorry, but I couldn't resist. My apologies to geddylee10002000 and to ChattanoogaPhil.)

I think that was also the second response to my infamous "annoyed at thread drift" rant. Was that you? :)

It’s not much stronger than regular hooch. The linked recipe calls for 1 liter (35.2 oz) 190 proof Everclear, 2 cup sugar and 6 cups (48 oz) water.

I don’t know how much syrup the sugar will yield, but diluting 35.2 oz of 190 proof with 48 oz of water reduces the ABV by over half.

35.2/(35.2 + 48) = 35.2/83.2 = .423
.423 x 190 = 80.4 proof

Yeah, we used to mix 3 pints grape juice (pour out a pint from a 2 quart container) with a pint of Everclear. Although that would make a drink that is only ~25% alcohol (50 proof) its taste was so mild that you would drink a LOT more of it than you realized and it would put you on your backside in a hurry. I drank a whole 2-quart batch by myself one night and woke up 2 hours late for work and still staggering drunk at 11am the next morning.
The wedding schnapps is the same way. It may be only 80 proof, which is comparable to bourbon. But you drink the sweet wedding schnapps straight by the glass full - and can easily drink more than one glass full. Not too many people are going to drink more than one glass full of straight bourbon.

My actual recipe is 2 parts water, 1 part sugar according to 1st recipe. Then mix alcohol 50/50 with syrup. Tried second recipe and if correct you lose 1/2 part water due to evaporation of water in syrup in process. So that is about 1.5/1 blend.

I will continue to experiment to get to my recipe.
