Eye charts...

It's all about visual acuity.
Visual Acuity Testing (Snellen Chart)

I personally think it is a great way to be part of a test so we can see, or not see, how well or poorly we understand each letter. Amazing how some of the letters look the same when our vision is impaired.
Last time I got glasses, I just looked into the eyepieces and the machine read the accommodation itself.

After having our ears rung over time, I can't imagine a hearing test with a song instead of a single note. I hear things before the testing begins.

Light and how we perceive it has always amazed me. Tolerances for eyeglasses are double what they used to be. Choose your eyecare professionals wisely.

Boy, you had a stash

Now that I had the cataracts removed from both eyes and had my nearsightedness greatly reduced I was able to get the wearing corrective lenses condition removed from my driver's license. I think I look 15 years younger when I don't have to wear glasses.

You could have tried these. They seem to make you look a lot more than 15 years younger. The model is 48.:D

My vision went south in the third grade and I began wearing thick glasses. By the time I graduated from high school, my vision was 20/200. I actually had a routine with my long-term eye doc. He'd say, "Read the first line on the eye chart." I'd say, "What eye chart?" He'd say, "The one on the wall." I'd say, "What wall?" Comedy Gold!

All seriousness aside, I just had cataract surgery, and now I have normal distance vision for the first time since the second grade. It's amazing to get up in the morning and be able to see without first fumbling to find my glasses. So bring on those eye charts, and put them on any wall of your choosing. I'll read 'em perfectly.

I'm just the opposite. I have such huge bags under my eyes, that I look older without glasses. Even after my cataract surgery, I wear bifocals for reading and to correct for astigmatism. They hide my bags perfectly!

I recently turned 72 and had to renew my driver's license. I took the eye test and did good with both eyes and good with my right eye, not so good with my left. The examiner never said boo, but when I received my new DL it said eyeglasses, corrective lenses. Now here is my thinking, I only need glasses for reading up close and otherwise don't wear my glasses at all; I have no problem reading road signs at all. I just had my eyes checked and was told that they would give me proof that corrective lenses were not needed to drive if I wanted to fight it. But here is the thing, I only slightly failed at the DMV on my left eye. I am pretty sure most everyone drives with BOTH eyes open; why would I drive with my (right) good eye closed? Makes me want to leave my glasses at home while driving, just like I have for the last 15 years!

The number of badass American servicemen who had to cheat on their eye exam to get into the military and then went on to do great things is staggering.

I know that for a fact. My dad was in the USNR as a pilot for over twenty five years. He became exceptionally far sighted as the time passed but had memorized the eye chart used in his yearly exam to keep flying. Failed when they changed the chart. By that time he was a squadron commander and could have stayed on "flying a desk" but decided to retire instead.

John

PS; Personally, I think that if they made the charts easier to read, fewer people would need glasses.

Sorry but I still don't get how identifying a single letter relates to the real World.

This isn't Sesame Street and we're not 2yr olds.

For me as I see it, the difference between the letter is: If the O isn't closed it's a C. Is it a B or an R, a Q or an O, an I or a T. Can I see detail or just get close. Can I see burrs on a trigger, wear lines on a part or other small details.

As a qualifier no one in my family works in any way in the optical business.

If you get past 40 without glasses you are above average. If you get past 50, you are in the rare category. This of course includes reading glasses. There are many things that increase our quality of life. Not doing well on an eye chart test and needing glasses can improve your life in many ways.

63 no glasses and no reading glasses. 20/20 vision. Ophthalmologist said if everyone had eyes like mine she would be out of business. I had 20/15 vision for many years.

That being said I can't hear worth a damn. Go figure..... Too much shooting, riding dirt bikes and flying airplanes without hearing protection.

As a kid I had 10/15 vision like Chuck Yeager, I was spoiled and could read street signs from two or three blocks away, it was helpful as a bus driver. My close up vision started failing in my 40's, I got away with cheaters, then just opted out for quality eyewear full time in my 50's as I got tired of digging for a pair of cheaters, etc. Mechanic friends of mine had their bifocals put on upside down, I had a pair made like that, they were a godsend while working on the car. My eyesight deteriorated and finally this past year I had both cataracts removed, at distance I have 20/20 uncorrected but need glasses to see the gauges clearly.
I encourage anyone to get your cataracts done as necessary, do not put that off, it will change your life. I'm back to shooting targets competitively and can see like a kid again at distance. I've been told it is short lived but in the meantime I will enjoy my new found vision and how bright everything is again.
