Stars and Stripes to end
Just saw an articles that the military's
Stars and Stripes newspaper has been
ordered by the Pentagon to cease this
month.
The $15 million budget has been penciled
out of the newest budget.
The paper was started in 1861.

Stars & Stripes is what I read during my ‘64-‘68 Navy service. What a shame!

It seems that the House of Representatives has gone to bat for the S&S, adding the funding back in to the budget. The Senate has yet to act.
Hope it continues because I enjoy it's online articles and imagine those in service do also.

I wonder if any one in on that decision has any clue what a comfort it is to those overseas. It was a major connection to things going on on the sweet side of the pond. I have no idea what the money they save will be used for but i hope it will be and vital to servicemen over seas as the Stars and Stripes is. I doubt that it will but I can still hope.

in West Germany the Stars and Stripes was commonly read. however the paper mostly like to be read was the Overseas Weekly or more commonly referred to as the Oversexed Weekly.

Absolutely loved the Stars and Stripes when I was stationed in West Germany. Be a shame for it to disappear.

Just heard the decision to end
the newspaper has been rescinded.
I suggest forum members search for
the who, what and why of the first
order and the second order from the
Pentagon.

It appears somebody caught on that this was really bad timing for yet another flap over disrespecting military traditions.

Mine too. At sea we all looked forward to getting a couple dozen copies with the next unrep. Sad...

Dad used to bring it home from the base for mom to read to give her a glimpse of the country she was about to invade.

Read President Trump's tweet -- that the Stars and Stripes will NOT be terminated. He said "not on my watch" ... [DoD will have to find another cash cow to gore...]

Sounds like somebody in DoD has people from the USPS and AMTRAK helping them manage and make budget decisions. There has to be a million better ways to save money and keep the S&S going besides cancelling. How about online only versions? Less frequent editions? Turn it over to Amazon or Facebook and let them monetize the ads?

Interested in the long life of the publication and looked up it's history. Union troops commandeered a civilian press.
Wiki:
"On November 9, 1861, during the Civil War, soldiers of the 11th, 18th, and 29th Illinois Regiments set up camp in the Missouri city of Bloomfield. Finding the local newspaper's office empty, they decided to print a newspaper about their activities. They called it the Stars and Stripes."
It matches the history of a WWI trench publication called the Wipers Times, begun by British soldiers in the Flanders city of Ypres.
A good movie about it's publication was released a few years ago.

Too bad you don't know any better sources.
From the Stars and Stripes:
... Last month, Pentagon officials instructed Stars and Stripes to prepare to cease publication on Sept. 30 ....
Bipartisan group of senators urges Esper to keep funding Stars and Stripes - U.S. - Stripes

I guess by closing Stars and Stripes, the Pentagon wants the military to get the true, honest, unbiased fact reporting from the news sources like CNN and the Washington Post.

Stars and Stripes, and AFN. That's where I got my news. Long ago now so things may have changed.

Nostalgia aside, how many here still buy & read a print newspaper? I haven't bought a paper since I retired. We read Stars & Stripes back in the day because that and the Army Times was all we had. People who are in these days are all about the electronic media, as are most of the rest of us, good, bad, or otherwise.

Yes, but this may miss the point. Stars and Stripes has long moved online too; this isn‘t just about eliminating an outdated printed form of news. The Pentagon had originally ordered the entire operation terminated, not just printing a paper.
Back in different times, Patton supposedly once got in trouble with Ike for trying to censor a Bill Maudlin cartoon he didn‘t like. But Stars and Stripes‘ independence may not be popular with the leadership today.

I just read that Trump had saved it and it will continue. I guess you have to see which news reports out there will decide whether it's true or not.
