Buddy Hackett, gun collector. Nice nickel Model 19.

He spent a lot of time at Duke University's "Rice Diet" program. So much time that he bought a house in Durham near Duke. He used to go to the the Durham County Sheriff's Office on weekends and entertain the deputies. He was a big gun guy and a staunch law enforcement supporter.

Ten or more years ago listed on Gun Broker was a nickel M39. It had in an inscription to someone from Buddy. The seller had a bunch of documentation as to who and why Buddy gave them the gift, had a Vegas connection too. It was a nice piece but dont recall how it ended.

I was told Elvis liked to give Smiths as gifts too

Buddy was a frequent attendee at the big Las Vegas show at the Sahara Hotel back in the day.

I went to the Sahara gun show twice back in the late 1980s, but never saw anyone famous. The Sahara is still there, but I imagine the gun show is long gone. The only famous person I ever saw in Las Vegas (outside of in a show) was Sammy Davis Jr., back in the 1990s. Don't remember the casino, but it was downtown. Maybe at the Golden Nugget.

Let's not forget Mel Torme.
Mel Torme was such a devoted Colt SAA collector that one time he did a show at a studio and it involved guns. He was looking at the “props” which were real Colts and saw one was consecutive serial number to one in his collection. What a memory! But all parts didn’t match. So he looked at other SAAs in their armory and saw parts were swapped around during cleaning in years past. He reassembled the guns correctly and bought the mate to his.

I went to Graceland over 10 years ago and they had some of his guns on display. I had to do a little digging, but I found a photo I took while I was there:

It's been over 10 years ago, but at the local gun show a guy had a display with several items, one of which was, I think, a S&W snubby revolver. Exactly which one I don't remember. Elvis had given it to some woman on his household staff, and hand-wrote her a permit to carry it. Something like "I give this gun to Miss Lucy so she can protect herself. It's OK for her to carry it. Elvis Presley" Or words to that effect. I imagine the Memphis cops would probably have honored it.

Well Elvis gave Nixon a Colt 45 and Nixon gave him a badge so maybe he figured he had the authority to issue carry permits. :)

Anyone know of any of the younger actors or actresses etc. that are into firearms?

I would think that with the current climate in Hollywood, any actor/actress with an interest in firearms likely keeps it on the down-low if they want to continue getting gigs.

Long ago, he was a frequent guest on Johnny Carson's late night show. I remember that once he discussed his gun collection. From the same era, Jerry Lewis was also a gun collector.

Missed the gun collection discussion, but on another Carson asked him if he carried. Buddy answered yes, always, and said he was packing right then, on the show.

Carson wanted to see, which was declined and then Johnny asked 'where', since he hadn't noticed anything before the show/rehersal when he had seen Buddy without his jacket. Buddy kept demurring, but eventually pointed to his ankle. Johnny was a bit gobsmacked that he had noticed nothing that even hinted that Buddy was packing.

My respect for Buddy jumped 1,000% right then.
