Mannix tv show
Been watching season 1 of Mannix and took a great trip down memory lane and yesteryear.
I always thought it was a very good show....too much smoking but still a decent show.
Anyone else have a thought or opinion?

I remember it well. Part of CBS’s killer Saturday night lineup.

I have a thought. Was it too much smoking back when it originally aired, or too much smoking now in the woke era . . . ?

It was common place then.....both of my parents were heavy smokers...I choose not.
Just MY observation...I'm still going to continue watching!

Mannix, Cannon, Baretta, Kojak, Dragnet, Hawaii 5-0, Starsky & Hutch, Police Woman, Hunter, Cagney & Lacey, Columbo, Hill Street Blues, there used to be a lot of good cop shows.
Now, not so much...

Far more people smoked in the Mannix era than today. Fewer people found smoking offensive then in comparison with now.
Mannix was a good show.

Well said, Muss. Nor is it fair to do so. We have erased enough history.
As for Mannix, it's on my late night agenda if I stay awake long enough. I had to laugh the other night watching Mannix get beat up. Does he get beaten on every episode?

I watch when I can't sleep. I like shows from the 60's and 70s and enjoy seeing what was pop culture, then. I even saw Neil Diamond and Buffalo Springfield playing in a couple of episodes! That was cool!

I vaguely remember it. It's been a very long time since I've seen that show.

Yes, a lot of cigarette smoking.
And a lot of the character actors
in movies and TV series died by
ages 40s to early 60 from heart
and respiratory diseases.

I used to drink a little but didn’t smoke.
But I often woke up hung over and smelling like cigarette smoke.

One of the things I really enjoyed was the theme song.....not many are in a fast 3/4 ( essentially in a fast One).
One of the snappiest of them all in my book.

Seeing seasons 7-8 on YouTube.
Mike Connors died of leukemia about 3 years ago. The secretary is also gone. Gail Fisher?
Most actors in those old shows are dead, but the shows remain good.

Buffalo Springfield - "Blue Bird" playing in background - later they play "For What It's Worth" With a young Tom Skerritt.
From "Warning Live Blueberries", aired October 28, 1967
Neil Diamond "The Boat That I Row" and "Raisin' Cain" In a latter scene "Solitary Man" was played.
Originally aired October 7, 1967
"The Many Deaths of Saint Christopher"
I love that era of music!!!

Its on early AM on MeTV. I watch it every morning with my first cigarette of the day.
And by the way if anyone is interested, smoker Mike Connors: Born August 15, 1925 – Died January 26, 2017, that's not a bad run in my opinion.

It was definitely a cool car show. I am not even a car guy, but enjoyed seeing his cars. I watch Mannix a lot since I can't sleep lately. It comes on at 2am on METV. While watching lately, I saw a car I could not identify. It was an Oldsmobile Tornado Roadster. To me, it was really COOL! Anybody here ever have one? I found this online.

Knew a guy from Fresno who went to school with Krekor Ohanian , AKA Mike Conners.
‘Mike’ came from one of many Armenian families up that away.

It's on at 2 AM my time...followed by Cannon and Barnaby Jones. The channel has a great lineup of shows.

I believe that's true, and that he spent much of his final time talking of the dangers of smoking. Certainly an honorable end to a life to short.

Granted, smoking is hazardous to health, but looks like that's taken over what could have been a good thread about a good TV show.
Many of you may already know, but William Talman did a lot B (and A-) movie work before he hit it big on Perry Mason. Usually good roles.

William Talman contracted lung cancer, and toward the end of his life he did make public service announcements against smoking for the American Cancer Society. (The Perry Mason TV Show Book, copyright 1987) I saw one of them that was made not long before he died in 1968 and he looked BAD.

Just to get the topic back on S&W firearms; in the early seasons Mannix drove a super customized Barris creation based on the Olds Toronado (Floating bull) and carried a Walther PPK in a funky mechanical holster. All the bad guys carried 2" S&W Model 10 6-shot revolvers. In the later seasons he was a lone Private Eye with a a-typical sexytary and he carried a S&W M-10 2" revolver and all the bad guys carried PPKs. Geoff Who remembers a few episodes. Regretfully Shell Scott never made it from the paperbacks to the little screen.

Geoff-
He had a Detective Spcl., not a S&W. Look carefully. I may have missed an M-10 episode.

Police Woman debuted in 1974. Compared to All in the Family, it was the Brady Bunch . . .

Long ago, I ran into a celebrating Mike Conners/Krekor Ohanian (may he rest in peace) and he bought me and a few friends rounds of drinks at a party he was hosting at Rick's on Westheimer. Seemed like a nice guy, knew how lucky he was, he gave one drunk buddy a (legitimate) ride home.

I remember that show and loved it. Been a long time and had forgotten about it. My dad smoked and smoking in the house, office and car were never anything I ever thought about and I don't think many people did. I smoked for years and loved it but quit a number of years ago and glad I did. Thinking back I think you could smoke pretty much anywhere you wanted to.

Rockford Files, Cagney & Lacey, NYPD Blue, Mannixx are some of my favs. I record NYPD Blue now during the wee hours and watch them daytime now. Mike Hammer was another pretty good one.

The konks on the head would have had him in a nursing home the first season. There used to be a video of all the headshots he took, but it's gone now. Pretty funny.

After the M-60 appeared, Helm' s agency switched to those, but his description of earlier guns did indeed seem to be the M-38. Good catch.

I love watching those shows again, Dragnet, Combat, Wagon Train, Death Valley days...
Smoking was much more prevalent then, I was in the Coast Guard and was transferred to New York City in 1971. You smoke in movie theaters if you were seated in the loge, lol!

MANNIX, with Gail Fisher as Peggy. I think she had a son named Toby. Those old shows always had smokers because tobacco companies sponsored most of them. I always remembered Chuck Connors was a tougher dude than Mike. Were they brothers?

Well, since Mike was an Armenian originally named Krekor Ohanian, and Chuck’s real name was Kevin Joseph Aloysius "Chuck" Connors, it seems unlikely . . .

There was a comment about other agencies getting the Stainless Steel guns and he was still using a blued revolver.
Geoff
Who noted the early references were to the Model 38, but not by name.

Helm's exposure to the M-60 began in the book set in Hawaii. The Betrayers?

After watching several seasons worth of this fine show, it appears that the property folks only had Colt DS and Walther PPK's to use on the set.
Either in a shoulder holster, cross draw or small of back.
Uniformed officers all had a 6" Model 10 it seems and Mannix's opponents all used a Walther....wait, one bad guy used a P-38
Still a fun show with very interesting plot lines.
Randy
PS. Where did they find all of those really cool cars anyway?
