Default Jeff Beck & ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons 16 Tons

Found this on the Tube. A cover of Ernie Fords “16 Tons”
Good beat along with Gibbons tweaked vocal or is it his hat make him sing like that?
Plus Tal Wikenfield on bass and Jeff Beck.
Submitted for your approval.
I like it.

Two of the best in their own styles kind of like a model 29 and a Colt SAA. Blackmore said it best about Beck, "those notes aren't on my guitar".

I've been a JB fan since his Yardbird days. Besides playing without a pick, he continues to show the world what a volume knob and a tremelo arm can do in the right hands.

Chops for days!

Tastes vary. The copy doesn't compare to Ernie Ford's version.

Agreed. Totally different genre. But, as for me, like 'em both.

E.g. Elton John's Rocket Man is the original, I think. But I like Iron Horse's blue grass cover better: Rocketman // Iron Horse - YouTube

Covers can be great, too.

I like that version a lot. There are many times that a cover out does the original. Music is open to interpretation.

There are only 12 notes and we can do with them what we like.

PS: I think Ernie would would be glad that someone is reintroducing a new generation to his work.

I think a song being covered is always a form of honoring the original and the artist who introduced it, even if the style changes.

Ernie Ford wasn’t the original artist either, just the most successful. Merle Travis wrote and recorded it in 1946.

My favorite has always been Johnny Cash’s version of that song.

Beck and Gibbons are great, as is Tal Wilkenfeld on the bass.

If you dig further you will find that the linked video is a hoax that was put together and posted online a while back and was never intended to be offered up as real.

There is a live album that ZZ Top put out since that has them actually doing the song in much the same manner, most believe as a "tip of the hat" to the hoaxer who put the video together.

That explains why the guitar playing isn't synchronized with the video. I thought something was odd about it.

Cute. It‘s very cleverly made. Cobbled together from footage of them doing “Rough Boy” and “Foxy Lady” at a 2009 concert.

But once you know what to watch for, the mis-matched hand and lip movements become fairly noticeable.

Every time I hear "16 tons", I immediately think of Monty Python

I find nothing wrong with any of the versions. I first heard Ernie Fords version when I was a young boy in Bisbee Az and My dad was working underground in the copper mines. I always enjoy hearing it.............
