oh...i'm out there.
Does anyone else enjoy the benefits of Crockpot Cookery or am I REALLY some kinda troll? (Don't answer that!) Over the course of the last week I have utilized this facinating appliance to produce Corned Beef and Cabbage, BBQ Beef Shortribs, Roast Goose, Roast Porketta AND Chicken Tacos!

The extra range time was much needed.

We were just talking about crockpots at the dinner table last night, how some folks just love 'em, but they never really floated my boat. Main problem is they're just too darn hard to clean; you can't drop 'em in the sink full of water, and you can't toss 'em in the dishwasher. Ergo, mine get used ... rarely.

Those are some mighty tempting dishes you mentioned, however ... may give me reason to reconsider ... especially if'n you were to share some of those recipes!

reerc - get a modern crockpot where the liner lifts out to be cleaned by the conventional methods.

Try them in the basement, garage, or even outside if weather permits but I know they'll never replace a good grill! (Esp. in sunny N.M.)

When I call home after work to check in and the wife tells me she has food in the Crock Pot ready when I get home, I find the nearest McDonalds, Burger King, or anything

My wife makes a 7 Layer Chicken Enchilada in the crockpot thats the best! We also make chili in season. Also ham & beans. And, if they're not careful, CATS!!!!

(Kiddin'! But if they don't stop tripping me .........

We have a really big one that my wife uses about once a year, the rest of the time we don't need one because I use the OVEN!

It would be great if I didn't have a stove or oven.

I've been making my own B-B-Q sauce for 40 years now - it's from an old Army Mess Sargent that my Father knew and is the one sauce that works with Pork, Chicken, Beef, Salmon and anything else you might want to coat with this stuff.

One of the issues I always had was trying to get it thick enough and still not have it burn. Well, last Year 'The Bride' bought me one of the really big ones by Rival and part of the idea was to try it for the B-B-Q sauce and I did. It worked Great!!! I could let the Sauce cook all day long and not worry for a moment about it burning. This batch got thick enough that you have to scoop it out with a spoon - it just won't pour out of the jars.

It also works great for making batches of pulled Pork, B-B-Q'ed Meatballs or a fine Beef Stew. And, one of the Best parts is that this one has a removable "Bowl" and that part can simply be placed into the dish washer.

DO NOT buy one SMALLER than 4QT. as that is a tiny, tiny volume of stuff that you'll always want more of. BUT, no left-overs!

They are good for somethings. I hate when my mom cooks a roast in it though. Just seems to take all the flavor out of it.

I'll bet that if she made it in a slurry of Cream of Mushroom soup, Lipton Onion Soup (dry-mix) and Coca-Cola for 10 hours or so you might change your tune!

Serve with mashed potatoes and some kind of healthy green.

After I came home to find the stew's grease had floated out and all over the kitchen counter, I bought a big 7-quart one. Just set it and forget it. And the insert cleans up very easily.

I took the crock out of a big one and use it for the dog's water dish.
And if it's the big 7Qt. job that dog will be hydrated for at least a day or TWO!
P.S. Beer/Cheese Soup, Crab &/or Artichoke Dip, and Fondue are also possible (not for dogs tho.) along with great Ribs mit Kraut (that IS a dog's fave!)

I use ours once or twice a month in the winter. I hadn't really considered why until I read Erich's post. Maybe that's it, but I don't really use it in the summer. Of course, in the summer I have a very nice grill with a side burner so that I don't have to heat up the house.

I make pork or beef taco meat, pork or beef pot roast, sometimes beans in it. And yes, the kind with the removable crock is the only way to go, and they're like a safe, get the next size up from what you think you need.
