1. The Big Sleep
2. The Public Enemy
3. Little Caesar
4. Pulp Fiction
5. White Heat
6. Key Largo
I cheated and listed six.
I hope these all fit the category.
No doubt the Godfather series would be high on anyone's list. I guess I just like older ganster movies better.
Any chance Taxi Driver could be considered a gangster movie? If sim it would proably bump something from my list.

Well, with the complete understanding that no gangster movie will ever come close to The Godfather 1 and 2...I like:

Donnie Brasco (based on FBI's Joe Pistone's undercover work and very, very close to his book)
Goodfellas (actually Wiseguy and based on Nick Pileggi's book about Henry Hill)
The Friends of Eddie Coyle (based on novel of same title by George V. Higgins, who was a Mass. prosecutor and knows his mob stuff--some of the book deals with "lunch pail" thefts from the S&W factory to supply the thugs)
Casino (also a Pileggi effort and based on The Outfit, its Kansas connections, and particularly
on Chicago enforcer Spilotro, who ended up in an
Indiana cornfield)
To Live and Die in L.A. (based on a Treasury agent's actualy experiences)
Little Caesar (which inspired professor Blakeley to come up with the RICO act to put "big boy" in jail and not just show Rico, an underling played by Edward G. Robinson, ending up in the gutter)
The Grifters (with Angelica Huston superbly playing a Mob/Outfit money courier, much like Virginia Hill actually was while at the same time being Bugsy's girlfriend)
OK, that's more than 5. Sorry.
The trouble with Godfathers, Untouchables is they
are pure Hollywood. The Godfathers glamorize the
mob as men of honor. As for the Untouchables, Elliot Ness' role in bringing down Capone was next to nothing to nil and is solely based on Ness' own self promotion. That said, they certainly are entertaining.

A few that I liked that haven't been mentioned:
Snatch
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
True Romance
I don't know if they're really gangster movies, but there's gangsters in 'em.

"A Bronx Tale" !!!
That's the movie I was thinking of when I listed "Once Upon a Time in America". I will edit my original post immediately. I really liked that movie.
The Usual Suspects" was great as well, but more of a crook movie than a gangster flick.

It is a good movie, especially when the Bikies decide to mess with the Mobs bar.

As far as TV gangster stories go, "Crime Story" was great- Dennis Farina's first really big role. Lots of great early 60's cars in it, too.

I think Thief could be considered a gangster movie and is the best movie James Caan was ever in (IMHO).
Supporting actors include Willie Nelson and Jim Belushi! Music is great too. Directed by Michael Mann.
Highly recommended.
Death Wish III certainly is about gang-bangers. I won't comment about realism. But any movie that co-stars a Wildey can't be all bad. You have to love the scene where Kersey is locked in a holding cell with the scum of the earth.

Jack Flash,
Thief is great but I don't quite put it in the gangster genre with other "gangster" films. But Robert Prosky's role as the head of the Outfit's "street tax" crew was based on an actual Chicago Outfit guy.
Jef,
The Black Forest? I can't recall it. Was it foreign made or is that forest nearby The Petrified Forest?

While GF1 & 2 are my favorites I can highly recommend Dinner Rush, with Danny Aiello. I bought a brand new copy on Amazon for $5.00 plus shipping. A combo of mob tactics and the everyday running of a NYC Italian restaurant.
Check the reviews. Dinner Rush

I agree with that Road to Perdition choice. I liked that handgun Tom Hanks used; and, why I recently bought one. And don't even know what he used in that movie.

Wow, I'm not the only guy here that liked Jimmy Cagney movies (like "White Heat", et al). I gotta admit, "The Sting" was a pretty good movie, too.
"Last Man Standing" was another good movie, too (especially if you like seeing 1911s in action).

Don’t know if this qualifies as a gangster movie or not but I really liked the Soprano’s. It attempted to show the true greedy and sick side of that life and the people who are attracted to it.
