My next door neighbor in Arlington, TX was a Major in the SVN Navy. His kids were despised at UTA because they were blowing the curve (grading curve).
My neighbor here was born in Da Lat and graduated Magna cum lade (sp?) at Ol' Miss.

I learned to speak passable Korean, and could understand even more. It was always fun to sit in the local bars and listen to the bar girls talk about us. Even more fun was the look on their faces after a few hours when I ordered another beer in Korean.

Learned enough Japanese to get by. But conversely most of the younger ones could speak English, but would not as the did not want to lose "Face", because they did not speak it well.

I have a 500 S&W and I have no doubt it would kill about anything.
But, that reminds me of a funny story. Years ago 2 one of my cousins and another good old country boy, were on their way to the western part of the state to go elk hunting. They see a hitchhiker and pick him up. It is some kid from New York and he has never been hunting or even thought about it. He is full of questions and they decide to take him along. He happily became the "gun bearer" and camp Sally.

I remember the aircrews from VMO-2 at Da Nang talking about shooting pink elephants on the trail. Seems as though when the elephants forded streams and river the water had enough of the red clay that when it dried they looked pink.

If they had pack marks or had cargo packs on they were fair game. Water buff were a different story. You better be pretty certain the ox cart driver was VC.

Our unit had a guy that hit a boo with a duce and a half, broke a leg and some other injuries. IIRC Army veterinarians came and took care of the boo unit they determined it should be “ put down”. Talk about the -=-# hitting the fan! Forget what the US ended up having to pay the Papasan and family. For those that were not there, the LN’s ( local nationals)claimed damages and reparations for the work the boo could have done in its life, the offspring from the boo, the work the off springs could have done, the trouble and cost of getting another, on and on.

When I was at MCAS Beaufort (beautiful Beaufort by the Sea) we had a couple of guys in the squadron who decided to go to the swamps and shoot rats. They used a single action revolver, type unknown. They were just about finished for the day when one of them decides to do some fast draw, shooting form the hip. Well you might figure out what happened. The idiot was pulling the pistol out of the holster, cocking the hammer and apparently had his finger pulling the trigger. The 22 LR went in his hip, bounced off and traveled down his leg to about an inch above his knee. When he realized he shot himself, a small amount of blood at the top of his jeans. They decided to go to the Navy hospital on base.
When he got to the ER the Corpsman asked him what he wanted and he told him "I shot myself". The Corpsman did not believe him until he showed the blood and small hole. He was told to get on the exam table and they were going to cut his jeans off. He jumped down and removed his pants. The x-ray showed a clean wound down to just above the knee. The doctors made a small incision and removed the 22LR.
While he was in the hospital, all kinds of Generals and Colonels were going by visiting the guys from Southeast Asia who had been banged up pretty bad. When they got to him him he was tired of explaining why he was there, so he just told them "I shot myself" and they quickly went to he next man.
Once out of the hospital had to clean the wound everyday by inserting a wire with a swab down his leg. That would allow the leg to heal from the inside the leg. We relished the thought of laughing at him for being so stupid in the first place. Hopefully he learned from his experience. Oh the fun we had.

Papasan became rich beyond his wildest dreams, like the yard that got 500 P for the knife. That was a lot of money to him.

We had a Cpl. do the same thing with a Ruger Old Army in ..44 cal. He was fast drawing and the hammer slipped while he had the trigger pulled in the holster. He was very lucky as the holster was sewn closed at the bottom by triple stitching and the holster was thick leather. After the ball cleared the holster bottom, it struck him in the calf. Again he was lucky he had on a brand new pair of Levi's 501's. The ball pushed the Levi's into his calf. he said it felt as if someone had hit him in the calf real hard. Noticed some blood on the back of his shoe, then realized his pants leg was bunched up at the calf. He pulled down in the pants hem and the ball popped out. It had not gone through the material. Now he had a 44 cal hole in his leg, and bleeding very well. So off to the Naval Hospital they went. I heard about it and went to the ER and he was not there, went to the ward to see if he was admitted and he was not. Back to The ER and they told me he had been there but they bandaged him up and sent him to the barracks. He was at work that night (worked night crew for us). They put him on light duty for two weeks. We had fun joking with him about it.
Had a SSgt shoot himself in the foot. But is for another time!

The most interesting shooting I ever witnessed was at morning muster at the Philadelphia naval yard. At a brick and concrete barrack with a covered back dock like area was where the muster was held. The duty Sargent calls out roll and after receiving the last yo, he say dismissed and does an about face, there is a load bang and a corporal screams "I been hit". Laughter as most assume it is all some kind of joke. Na, the guy is down on deck, Sargent had a personal 38 in his pocket and as he did his turn it fired, striking the cement deck and ricochet back up into the sole of the corporal's foot. The corporal had recently returned from Vietnam without receiving so much as a scratch only to be shot at morning muster, state side. He went of to the hospital, his shoe and the Sargent's 38 were taken in to custody

Had a SSgt shoot himself in the foot on New Years Eve about midnight. Says he was firing some rounds into the air to celebrate and when he lowered the revolver it went off. Of course there was some alcohol involved. The Squadron JAG officer asked me to inspect the gun. It was a Ruger and showed him it was fine and in perfect operation. Showed him how the transfer bar safety worked and that the trigger had to be pulled when it went off. The SSgt ended up in a metal halo around his foot. We presented him with a Polish Target Shooter's Award at a formation. Was mounted on a walnut plaque with a brass plate for the squadron SNCO's to him. Not sure what happened from the JAG investigation as he was transferred shortly there after.

The NVA/VC used them to carry supplies. You can load a lot of 122mm Rockets and other weapons on an elephant, and they can travel over really rough terrain.

Getting shot is No fun. About a year after I ETS’ed went shooting in the back field that was surrounded by woods. Way out in the country but still tried not to disturb the cows and pigs next door( 1/4 mile away) Was shooting with 2 friends, one was in RVN same time as I was but he was in I Corps. Had targets set up so rounds would go into some Large trees. Fellow RVN Vet and I were Behind “ the firing line” talking, other guy was shooting a el cheapo 22 single action. All of a sudden I felt something hit my back just left of spine and a tingling around my rib cage stopping under my left arm pit. Had a shoulder holster on with my BHP in it. Also heard the 22 shot a fraction of a second after the impact. Had a favorite surf shop tee shirt on from Va. Beach, I was Po’ed to say the least. Home from RVN less than 2 years and get shot behind parents house. Immediately took off holster, got into buddy car , stopped by parents to tell them and to get them to call my wife. Off to fire station wit ambulance about 5 miles. Onve to fire station, told them what happened and needed to get to an ER. I ambulance told “ attendant” I needed Oxygen as was getting difficult to breathe. The attendant wanted me to lie down! I bluntly told him my lung was collapsing and needed to be upright. Told him my medical training in the Army taught me that, hard to believe…. Anyway on way to hospital ( about 30 miles away) the siren went out on ambulance! Finally at ER was taken right in , placed on gurney and into X- ray then surgery. Nurses Cut My hard to get tee shirt off! Md told me where the bullet was and showed me the bump under my arm that was the bullet just under the skin. He asked out loud, wonder why it didn’t come out? Told him and he just shrugged. Rolled on my side, got a local shot, Md made small incision and removed bullet. Then this nice looking nurse came around on my right side and held my hands? Then a stabbing pain shot through my left side, I about crushed the nurse’s hands, her eyes crossed and her face went flush. They had inserted a drain into my lung sack as it was about full of blood and fluids. Felt like -*’= afterwards and stayed in hospital for a week. After that I was VERY careful of who I went shooting with. The friend that accidentally shot me never had any firearms training.

In some cases they were targeted as Retired W4 stated. In other cases it is called collateral damage. Never a good thing.

My brother said a pilot on his carrier (Hancock) gun cameras showed him blowing up a ammo carrying elephant, so they painted a small elephant on his fuselage

There were times in the past when I could have seen this happening. Opinions have changed about the military have changed in most quarters of society.

The only good I see that came out of the Gulf wars is the public's changed view of those in in uniform and veterans. I believe all those spitting and screaming vile names never forget what they did, to those who gave so much, many of them draftees with little choice.

As a former K-9 handler I can really appreciate this one. At Osan AB, and Korea in general back in the day, they had a Midnight to 4am curfew. We closed the main gate at midnight and the last drunk bus to the barracks left at 12:05. When it was full there were often fights until they started position a K-9 cop there.

A good friend of mine has a Niece that is in the Corps. She is a MP Dog Handler/Kennel Master as a Gunnery Sgt. Has a sort of a cushy job at the moment. She is the senior Marine MP Dog Handler at HMX-1. Travels a lot.
I send her all these jokes I find.

I had the unpleasant task of being on the detail that guarded a fellow Marine. He was black and they dusted his pockets and found the remnants of some pot. We were charged to not let him out of our sight until he was transferred to the base brig. Where, in the the name of all things that made sense, was going to go? We had the South China Sea on one side, the ville to the east, hostile territory to the west and mountains to the north. It was Chu Lai, were in the middle of nowhere.
Some things just didn't make sense. When I left we had several guys who would show up for work pretty high. There was no rationale for what they did to him.
Oh the fun we had. (sarc)
