Default Poll: Are you a cat person?

I'm sorry but I just don't get why people like cats. Dogs yes. But cats? Dogs truly want to please you and make great pets. But cats? In my less than humble opinion cats serve no purpose. They only care about themselves. They dig up your furniture and leave fur all over the place and don't even get me started on those smelly litter boxes. If you have a rodent problem on a farm yes, but if you don't have a farm or a large property with rodents can anyone make a legitimate argument on the reason to have cats?

I like both, but I am mildly allergic to some, but not all cats.

Cats are standoffish critters. They don't love you; they tolerate your stupidity. They approach every situation with the utmost confidence because they are the supreme species on the planet. And right when they're going to perform their ultimate feat, whether it be catching a starling on a tree branch or just getting on the kitchen counter, that look on their little faces as it all goes bad and they realize they're about to fail miserably and spectacularly is hilarious. And because they're so aloof and cold, it's socially acceptable to laugh yourself silly, thus relieving tension and making the world a better place.

They can be very loving companions. My son's cat is so bonded to him that she cries and wanders the house looking for him every time he leaves. She carries a little toy fox in her mouth like a kitten when she does it. She is definitely a people cat. I agree that many cats can be very moody and don't want anything to do with people bu not all are like that.

I find that I have no use for most dogs. I do like the ones that are intelligent and not super needy. I can't stand a yapping mutt that barks at everything, pees on my tires, digs up the yard, wants to hump everything, etc.

This is my son's little buddy.

Q: Are you a cat person?
(Opens Pandora's box, puts on flame suit and waits for coming conflagration.)

A: Is the pope Catholic? Does a dog bark? *** Do chickens drive motorcycles?

( *** Yes, I know about the basenji)

I see that in the time it's taken me to formulate a response, several others have chipped in, so I'll just sit back and enjoy the show, recalling that "walkin jack's" sig line is, "Real men love cats."

Cats have their personalities, I've met plenty who were unfriendly and ran away, or aloof and standoffish, crabby, selfish, self centered, inconsiderate-just like a lot of people. I tell people that cats are often better than wives or girlfriends. If they get tired of you, they just leave. They don't call the cops on you, file for restraining orders, drain your bank account, tie up your assets, bad mouth you.

Cats! Who need 'em???!!! You wake up in the morning with one asleep on your shoulder and the other one, all fifteen pounds of her, sitting on your pillow washing herself ... and giving your hair a wash job! You stagger into the kitchen and fumble w/ ... Non the coffee pot but the cat food! Got to do it! Otherwise the two of them sing a duet reminiscent of two Siamese cats in a Disney cartoon. After their morning constitutional, you scoop the box so the whole house won't smell like a cat house.

Why two? Because She who must be obeyed was concerned. She could see that you were not happy with just one normal sized little eight pound fur ball. So, she liberated a little "kitty" from the local prison where she and another nurse had found several of the little things about to die from exposure. She brought home this little kitty who she named ... "Smokey." She thought Smokey would be good company for Lucy ... AKA "Furball," a nice relatively quiet pure white Persian with green eyes and otherwise no connection with the green eyed lady of pop rock fame.

Sometimes ... they are useful. A Skink got in the parsonage one summer. Spent most of one afternoon trying to corner and kill the thing. Failed miserably. Walked down to the Ace Hardware to console myself by looking at tools. Later when I returned home, I noticed a strange stillness in the parsonage. No. I had not missed Gabriel blowing his trumpet for the second coming. But the fifth bowl of judgment had been poured out in the form of that over grown fifteen pound wad of muscle and claws who had done ... what cats do so well! She had caught and very convincingly killed that skink. She had then done a post mortem on the skink ... right on the rug at the end of the bed. The head was detached. The legs were detached. The tail was detached and in several pieces. And ... lying there washing her self was ... "Wild Thang!" Yep. I gave her her new and much more better name. She looked at me with scorn. She prefers the name, "Doctor." Goes around the house humming a Weird Al Yankavich song ... "Like a Surgeon ... cutting for the very first time!!!"

Tell you what! You've read this far ... so I'll make a deal with you! What kind of a deal you ask? Simple! A deal deal! (Think ... Kelly's Hero's). I'll graciously rent Wild Thang to you. The terms will be simple. I'll send you the cat. I'll provide you a great big bag of cat food every three weeks. The cat will eat maybe a bag every month or so. You can sell the surplus on Craigs List, Ebay, or in the parking lot of the local WalMart! You will make money. You will never have to pay rent on the cat. And I will some how manage to survive ... alone ... all by myself. I hear a song ... "All by myself! I wanna be ... all by myself ... every more!" Sincerely. bruce.

I hated cats when I was younger as I had one take a swipe at my face when I was about 7 years old. Of course, I have run into pyscho dogs over the years too, but we always had a dog in our home.
I was never big on cats until my son rescued one Tiger Cat. After Tiger we got a second cat and Charlie was genuinely a character. They always stayed in my heated and insulated garage with my dogs and come and go as they please. We live in a rural area so they are great at catching mice.
All animals have their own personalities just like people. I never took the time to understand them until I got older.

Depends on the cat. We had one once that was a great companion. She came when you called her, didn't tear up the furniture, would play with you all day long (she would fetch a toy and bring it back for you to throw again), she would even walk around the block with us.
I'll never forget seeing her chase a Great Dane out of the yard.

On the other hand, we've had a couple that were just a waste of fur.

I haven't been without a cat for 60 years. I just love 'em. I never much cared for dogs although I can see why folks like them. As with many pets, cats respond to how much and what type of attention you give them. My current cat and I walk the property most mornings (not on a leash) and she's a wonderful companion. Dogs are pack animals who just want to please in the hope of improving their hierarchy within the pack. Cats are much different. You need to earn their trust. Just my opinion and I expect that yours may differ.

Have had cats since I was a kid, some were great, some were not great. My experience is that you need to get them as a kitten and train/spend a lot of time with them to have them be worthwhile as a pet. They’re probably best for those that are alone a lot, as they are good company.

Dogs are much easier to get to the ‘great pet’ status. Like children, any animal is only as good as the person raising them, it takes time, love, and trust.

The thing with dogs is that you always have to be around for them, you’re more tethered to the house... Cats are easier in that respect. At this point we don’t have any cats, and I don’t see myself getting another. Don’t like the shed hair, and litter boxes are gross. We’ve got two great dogs and I don’t have to psychoanalyze them to establish a meaningful relationship with them... Ha!

Love cats - and dogs.

I have a theory about everything, including why some men don't care for cats. It's because cats can't be controlled. Unless, of course, they want to be.

Numerous complaints about litter boxes. I have mine down the cellar. Leave the cellar door cracked. The cat knows where it is located and does his thing.

With todays new litter compounds they are deodorized and clumping. Easy clean up with no odor. Clean the box once a day and all is well. Civilized, as in almost human.

On the other hand.....dogs!!!! Look out the window often and see the "neighborhood dog walkers" letting fido do business on my front lawn. They always are looking up at the sky as if to say "what a wonderful day it is". Politely asked a lady the other day if she could not have her dog do his business on my front lawn. She replys...."Oh it's OK I have a dog baggy". Picks up half the mess and walks away. The other half is smeared into the grass.

Owners fault...not the dogs, but at least a cat doesn't need to be taken to the bathroom.

Smelly litter boxes are due to lazy owners. Cats are extremely clean
animal. Clean the box when they get used. Should have a litter box
on each floor.

Growing up on a farm as I did....outdoor cats, yes. But indoor cats, no way. We still have a barn cat, out with the horses and goats. The major thing wrong with cats is the lack of any good recipes. 🤣

As a kid we had a really cool cat that disappeared one day. As I recall it showed back up a month later (or so), skinny as heck, and it died a couple days later. Guessing it got locked in somewhere. Poor thing. When first married, we had 2 cats. Both really nice. One died of feline liver cancer and we had to give the other to a neighbor when we moved across country. No cats since then.

Mom was allergic to dogs.. Dad was allergic to cats.. so they claimed.. never had anything but fish growing up... accepted that pets should be short term and flushable.. of course Grandma had barn cats on the farm and dogs in the house... Loved going to the farm... and Tiny was a basinji and couldn't bark... but if you whistled & howled enough he would sing along.. until the silly grown-ups said to knock it off... then off to the barn to look for kittens in the hay loft ... still remember Grandpa grabbing kittens and squinting them in the face while milking cows... what a fun memory.. thanks

I love dogs and most dogs take an immediate liking to me. In fact, its extremely rare for me to run across a dog that doesn't like me. We get along just fine.

I have a strange relationship with cats. Some will tolerate me, but most hate me with a passion. Very few actually like me.

My former girlfriend had both a dog and a cat. The dog and I hit it off right from the start. We were best friends.
The cat OTOH took quite a while to warm up to me. Eventually, he came to tolerate me and would even play. But it was a one sided relationship. He never really showed any kind of love.
When GF and I would cuddle up on the couch, he liked to sit on the back of it right behind my head. I always suspected that this was so he'd be in easy striking distance.

Dogs have family.
Cats have staff.

I found a small black kitten in a Sam's parking lot many years ago, laying in the shade under a truck's tire. He was mouthing off is why I even found him.

Brought him home and kept him inside for over 18 years. He had a rolled up sock that he would go fetch if I told him to. He was always waiting by the back door when I came home from work, fussing that I was gone so long.

At night when I went to bed he would curl up under my left arm (I'm a back sleeper - all night), and most often be there when I woke up. He was my best little buddy, and I miss him as much as any of the many many dogs I've had over the years. Yep, I like cats just fine.

I like cats, in general, but like anything else their “personalities” vary wildly from individual to individual, so with some cats, uh… not so much. I am allergic to cat dander, so I can’t tolerate being around them for very long. Dogs almost invariably I like, and I have no allergy problems with them. On a case by case basis, the odds hugely favor dogs. Mostly, I like other people’s cats.

Definitely a cat person/family. I like dogs if they point and retrieve birds.

Highpockets is rubbing against my legs as I post this. Most affectionate animal I've ever been around and makes me laugh several times everyday. He's one of five resident felines - presently.

Outside cats I can tolerate. I ignore them, yet they always seem to like me, but shy away from other people. I've never touched my barn cat, but she insists on following me around like a dog. A Grey Fox adopted me last year, and is always close by watching, but too wary to get close to the barn.

I love dogs and cats equally.

Their attitudes are completely different. A dog is always asking, "What can I do for you?", while a cat asks, "What can you do for me?"

In 39 years Ruthie and I have rescued over 30 cats. We presently have 11.

They bring us incalculable joy.

Can't imagine our lives without them.

Default Never was until........

My daughter got a black cat 4-5 years ago, the cat knew I didn't like cats and started a spirited campaign to become my favorite animal.... the rest of the family can't (or won't) believe the change, I still don't like cats in general, but when home this one is always on my lap, sleeps in my bed and will often pretend she doesn't like me (but I know she's faking it).

Here's my favorite TV commercial (from Chevrolet) to come along over the years, this is the long version that's I didn't see until looking for one to post here:

I really like my 2 cats. Haven't owned a dog since I got rid of my pack of deer hounds.

“Poll: Are you a cat person?”

Might have been interesting to see a real poll.

I’m not. Dogs neither. I don’t dislike pets, I just have no use for them.

I get along with the various cats and dogs of my friends, am polite and provide the appropriate scratching when being accosted by the animal while on a visit.

But I get no added value from the presence of the animal. I could see the utility of a trained dog big enough to have deterrent and support value, but even that consideration does not apply to cats, parakeets, or goldfish.

I have a single female friend who is an almost archetypical “cat lady”. Visiting at her place, it is harder to have a decent conversation with her than with some of my younger friends who have little children running around, because she is constantly fussing over her two cats and talks to them acting almost like they were additional people in the room.

I don’t get it.

I figured the response would largely be a forgone conclusion as the forum's feline defenders leapt into action.

Nothing "dumb" about dogs or their owners, though. Both I and my gf have cats (which have appeared on The Lounge) but we'll both stop and fuss over any dog that looks friendly

Growing up we had a great big black Tom-cat. He thought he was a dog. He was very loved and spoiled. Have a dog now and love him very much. He's my buddy and always so happy when I get home. He usually goes to work with me unless the Wife has a day off. I just love animals so much...people I'm still working on!

And they don't go rolliing in dead stuff and barnyard poop. Every time I take my mini excvator over to my neighbour's to clean out the barn and put in new bale of hay for her alpacas, Stella is nose-deep in soiled hay!

What I like about cats is they are independent. They like you if they
choose to.
Growing up on a farm and having cats as long as I can remember, most
have chosen to like me. My only cat now is going to be 19 come summer
and she still rules the dogs and occasionally brings in some critter for my
approval. Since cool weather started I leave a heat lamp on for her
in the storage/feed/tack/junk shed and on really cold nights I bring her
and the dogs in the house.
10 years ago we had 5 cats and now 4 of them are buried out near the
fence line with the mule pasture. When the time comes my Grey Girl
will join them.

I am a cat person.

I have had several over the years, and never had one that was not affectionate to me and most other people.
As with raising a child, if no affection is shown, usually none is given back.
I your cat is just some creature at your house that you are always kicking out of the way by the door, and you never talk to or pet it, or play gently with it, don’t be surprised if it acts aloof around you.
