Never received one of those. Might want to call the local SS office and inquire there.

I agree with g-dad to call or visit the SS office near you. Something doesn't smell right with receiving a hard check when you have direct deposit. I would look at that check very carefully and any documents that came with it....It could be some kind of scam. Or take it to your bank and have them look at it. I definitely wouldn't cash it until then.

I had the SSA once mistakenly suddenly stuff $20K into my bank account. I figured they'd want it back. They did, too.
Even after I returned it via certified mail, signature required, and they'd cashed my personal check, they STILL sent me letters threatening dire consequences if I didn't return their money pronto.
Finally had to get my congressperson's office to lean on 'em and make 'em cut it out.

It may be reimbursment for Medicare payments.
If you were paying your Medicare payments yourself monthly before collecting SS and payed any months premium over into the time when SS actually took effect and SS started paying the Medicare...
then SS reimburses you those month(s) medicare payments you paid out of pocket .
Many people have 1 or 2 payments out of pocket to Medicare before SS gets their act together and starts paying for you on SS.

I'll take the above advice and call, but I bet you're right on the money. I've only been getting SS for two months and there was an overlap.
Thanks.
I googled it and just read: "No experience but just a guess on my part."
"Were you previously paying Part B premium on your own and the check is a refund of advance premiums paid since they started taking it out of SS? Is the check amount evenly divisible by $148.50?"
"For example if your SS started 2/1/20 and they wtihheld $148.50 for Part B premiums and in December you paid a $445.50 Part B premium bill for 1/1/20-3/31/20 then they would owe you $297."
That's my circumstance exactly.
Thanks.

Don't deposit it your bank account until you figure out what it is.

2152hq hit the nail on the head. I just recalled I had the same situation when I signed up for SS after already being enrolled in Medicare that they refunded my prepaid Medicare monthly premiums for the two month overlap and it was by a check and not direct deposit.

Hold on to it for a few days. I had a mysterious direct deposit a while back and got a letter a couple of weeks later explaining the payment.
