500-pound bear known as "Hank the Tank" breaks into another Lake Tahoe home: "Lost all fear of people" - CBS News

Haven't seen a bear thread for a while. I like his name. I think it is funny in the video how people say they are locking their doors, do they think the bear is using the handle? This will probably end badly for the bear.

The ranger cabins in Denali National Park AK had long nails driven through the edges of the door and window frames, with the points sticking far out, like a metal porcupine.
One of the AK locals we met who lived semi-remote, with an outhouse, slept with a rifle under her sheets.

Simple solution, get all the left over food not sold by fast food places , put it where he will find it. How many whoppers can he eat, LOL.

I agree that this will not end well for Hank. I just hope it does not take a person getting hurt or killed to get something done.

This could have a bad ending if this bear breaks into a place where the owner
has gotten a bear permit from the Forest service.

If he picks homes without people present, he can keep this up for a long time.

One bear broke into a picnic table setup at the Incline area, that was putting on a Shakespear play, as the show was ending and the foor was ready.

"Great food.......... huh, Bo Bo " ?

Had to shoot a bear in the butt last year. Used a 12 gauge with rubber buckshot. Range about 20 yards. Was still kicking up dust 200 yards away as he ran. My 8 year old grandson said it wasn't buckshot but instead he calls it buttshot.

There's only one way this will end--the bear dead. It can hardly be captured and released elsewhere. It will just return or start raiding anew in a different place.

A few years ago a black bear broke into the peanut roaster at Mr. Ed's. a local candy store and museum on US Route 30 between Gettysburg and Chambersburg, PA. Supposedly it then dragged off a 50 pound bag of raw peanuts.

The bear population is out of control in Calif. Fish & Game limits the bear take & stops the hunt when the quota is reached. We have bear nearby but not quite here yet.

Hard to believe the state wildlife people don't have a bear trap.

375 H&H or trap and place in a rescue area thats well fenced. He is a creature of habit, some one fed him earlier, thats where the problem started.

Trap doesn't always equate to release.
The rangers at Yosemite placed one of those traps next to my tent, and it caught a nuisance bear during the night. When the ranger fetched it, I asked it's fate. He said it would be put down because it had returned from a previous resettlement attempt.

What about putting it in a zoo or some sort of sanctuary? Agree it can't be relocated. It's almost like a pet now.

Even deported people return across the southern border so why is it not surprising that a bear will return to where it finds easy pickings.

A bear remembers where it got it's meals. That was the second trip to that house.

Great googly moogly!

It’s not like black bears are endangered….

500+ lbs?
Broke into dozens of homes??
How much money should tax payers spend on this???
What are people thinking???

SHOOT IT!!!
Donate the meat to a food bank and auction off the hide.

In the mid '70s we were camped at Crater Lake National Park. The water at that time was not good. We got what came to be named the Crater Lake Crud. Necessitated many trips to the outhouse. One night, my dad felt a need. A need that had to be taken care of in the most expeditious manner. So, without grabbing a flashlight, off he went down the trail to the outhouse. Halfway there, he trips over something in the trail and goes sprawling. You guessed it, it was a black bear lying in the trail. Dad said he never stopped moving towards the Site of Relief, just slower and backwards. In the dark. The bear just stood up on all fours and walked off. Dad came back to the tent and us kids got to sleep in the trailer instead of the tent. We also stopped drinking that water.

500 pounds??!!! That is huge for a black bear!! My grandson shot this black bear last spring and it weighed somewhere between 350 and 400 pounds. I can't even imagine shooting a 500 pound black bear.
