So I'm looking to buy a new truck.
Waiting for warm weather to get out and wander the lots so I'm doing preliminary work online.
Prices are high no matter if it's a new or used vehicle. I currently own a 2006 F150 XLT. I bought it to be used as a truck. New prices might be cheaper if it weren't for these yuppies buying them to just go grocery shopping or run the kids to soccer practice. Anyhow I thought I'd try to value my truck as a trade by doing it online.
Tells you how bad things are when I got to the last question.

A friend of mine decided to look for a new truck. He sold his 7 year old pathfinder to carmax for almost what he paid new.
And we thought S&W's were inflated

I have heard demands are down because of gas prices. Might wait a few weeks…for less buyers out there.

I won't be replacing my pickup anytime soon considering I just use it for light farm chores and coffee shop runs. It sees less than 5000 miles per year.
We have researched some hybrids and even an EV in preparation for replacing my wife's Jeep Cherokee sometime in the future. No rush for that either.

It's a great time to sell pre-owned vehicles right now.
It's not a good time to buy new vehicles. I have a 2020 Chevy Colorado that is full of features that the 2022's don't always have because of the chip shortage. Things like heated seats, heated steering wheel (both of which I love) aren't always available.

I have a 2003, F150 with 97,000 miles and it has always been kept in a garage. I'm 80 so it should be in pretty good shape when my widow sells it. Larry

I was looking for another vehicle last Summer. I found many GOOD prospects at the car rental agencies for vehicles coming off the rental program. I eventually bought a year and half old van for well under the suggested used vehicle price. Yes, it had miles on it but I believe most rental companies tend to keep up the vehicles maintenance. I would look National, Enterprise, etc. My two...

I usually buy a used truck every ten years and sell the truck I had which was usually 3-6 years old when I bought it... This is the 10th year for my 2006 Ford F250 crew cab/short box diesel so I decided to get a new vehicle but not trade this one in as I had just purchased a slide-in truck camper for it last summer....
Still wanted lots of cargo space but a little more comfort...ended up with a 2022 Honda Ridgeline Sport in December... 21 mpg has been the low for around town and 28 the high all highway... Very comfortable, quiet and great gas mileage... Two days ago I ordered an ARE cap for the bed. The F250 had the same cap on it till last summer when I got the camper...
Only my second new vehicle in my entire 54 years of driving and at 70 probably my last vehicle purchase baring unforeseen circumstances...
Good luck on your search...
Bob

I got a 2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab a few weeks back. Paid $10K over sticker. Does everything but cook. 310hp V6 and 9 speed auto, it'll go 0-60 in about 3 seconds. Dash says avg mileage 22.4 mi/gal, that's combined city 90% and hiway 10%. Tight and quiet, plenty of room for 5. Bed is compact compared to my '10 Silverado's 9 footer. I like it so far (1st non GM vehicle in my lifetime). Joe

I'm driving a 2013 F150 4X4 I bought new in 2014. It's got 35,000 miles on it but I'd "like" a new one just for something different.
Just this morning I checked out the trucks at a local Ford dealership. (Online)
Given my parameters (4X4, V8), prices range from $50K to $67K.
I have no problem paying that much for .......... a new Bentley. But I think I'll wait till I get more miles on my truck before I pay $50K for a replacement.

I bought my two year old Bronco from a dealer in late 90's. For weeks after close of sale, they kept pestering, and pestering, and pestering me. Something about wanting to be friends and future buys. I won't go to a dealer again. Or if I do, I will get a pre-paid cell phone, then throw in in the river after deal is done.

Don't even think about a diesel unless you plan to pull a trailer a lot on
the interstates. I have an 82 Chev Silverado. It did an excellent job of
pulling a 32' Holiday Rambler all over the country, but when it settled
down to just local use it blew 2 engines. After the last one I converted
it to gas, and it's still running.

Suggestion: Assuming you have a clear idea of what you want, hook up with an experienced sales rep at a dealership and allow him/her to follow the availability and notify you when something of interest becomes available.
I did this in 2015 when buying a new car for my wife, and again in 2018 when I wanted a new truck. In both cases the vehicles I purchased were delivered to dealers in other cities, but my guy was able to get them brought here for me to see. I had financing pre-approved at my credit union, faxed to the dealership, so the buying process was about as pain-free as these things can be. My guy had also found a buyer interested in my trade-in, so I was allowed top dollar for a quick deal on top of my purchase.
Each time the process took several weeks. The truck actually took quite a while because I was looking for a plain-Jane no-frills TRUCK, not a high-end SUV with toys and gadgets. They don't usually carry such vehicles because of the lower profit involved without all the accessory add-ons.

My 2011 F-250 Super Duty Lariat 6.2 gasser just turned over 76k miles. 14 mpg (with tuner). It's paid off and I'm taking it to the grave with me. I live on dirt roads so I try and keep it as clean as possible. I go through a lot of quarters at the car wash.... If I sold it and put that money down on a new comparable truck, I would still have close to $600 a month payments for the next 6 years! No thanks.

That was a good plan back then, but now-all bets are off. If you want a new care around here you have to order it and pay what they ask when it comes in. The dealers have no floor plan expense now and are making bank on their new car sales (I've been told this by dealer clients). I sneered when I was tols the best one guy could do on Teluride was 5K over sticker. Said no and it was sold later that afternoon. I'm hard-headed enough to continue putting money into old blue since it is STILL CHEAPER than buting a new car. She is reliable, has working A/C and radio-no leaks and does what a vehicle is supposed to do-get me from point a to point b and back again, tow my boats and provide safe storace for my stuff.
Would I like a new fance bells and whistles truck...of course I would, but I'm not gonna buy into the madness going on now-just ain't gonna do it.

Time is fleeting. I am trying hard to end up with a balance of $0 when I go home.
Bought my second new car in 7 months. Exactly as I wanted it @MSRP.

How on Earth did you manage to get regular cab variant. I didn't think they sold those to "civilians" any more.

Just go to Ford dealer and order what you want.
Will take longer, but don't you deserve it ?
Maybe you have a friend/family member help with Ford special deals.

I ordered it…..the way I wanted just enough electronics to make it comfortable….7.3 big block gasser with freeway gears that you usually can only get on the powerstroke, 3.55. Hums along getting 15.7 miles per gallon. On one trip I was able to nurse 1pm-g

"I got a 2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab a few weeks back. Paid $10K over sticker."...sound like a my friend a few months ago...
Had a 2017 Toyota Tundra pickup and wanted a new one...$28K trade in on a $52K 2022 Tundra PLUS $10K market markup... He went home and called Toyota and was told they had no control over what the dealers were charging...
Went to the local Dodge dealer, got the same truck with all the same features for straight sticker of $52K plus the same $28K trade in.
The Toyota dealer called him a few days later and was told where they could put their truck...
I paid straight sticker for my Ridgeline... Local Nissan Dealer wanted $4k over MSRP on several of their trucks and SUVs...

It just so happens I went through the same dilema the last couple months. WE purchased a new 5th whl 40ft RV .... no problem, I have my 2002 Dodge ram 3500 dually diesel, it'll pull it like it's not even there .. well, after having a few mileage related issues come up, I determined it was time to step up. So I started looking at used newer Rams .. prices were high, high for anything decent so I decided to go new... poked around the dealership, nothing that really touched me so I went online and built a new one, figuring what the heck, it's the last new truck for me. I just ordered a brandy new Ram 3500 Laramie Dually diesel with most of the goodies .. almost 11% off MSRP, it's still a bundle, but I have lots of guns, one of my Harleys and my race car to sell to pay for it ..

I bought a new car this week. I don't get excited about cars. I just need to get to work in the morning. So the plan was to buy a new, base model, cheap car. Look at the dealer websites and they have almost nothing in stock and none of the cheaper models. But they have a lot "in transit". I figure that means it is on the truck and it will be there in a couple days. So go in, put $1000 down on something, and pick it up later in the week.
It don't work that way. In transit means it is on order and will arrive in 1 to 6 months. Every one of them already has a deposit on it. If I want a base model of anything it will be at least 6 months. My old car was on its last leg. Time for either the junkyard or give a mechanic a lot of money. I did not have months to wait. They only had a few new cars in stock. Salesman said that when cars come in they are typically sold that same day unless they are in the $40,000+ range. I ended up getting a new car that came in that morning. It was not a base model and it was more than $10,000 more than I planned to spend. At least it is a nice car.

The values of used cars, and the prices being charged for new ones, are amazing.
My daily driver is my 2013 VW Golf R. I have 177,000 miles on it, mostly trouble-free, and I have no plans to get rid it of it.
Just for grins and giggles, I checked its Kelley Blue Book value today. I paid $34,000 for it in November, 2012...and today, with all those miles, it's still worth an average of $7319...wow!

I'm building my "new" truck. I really don't need or want a rolling Iphone. Just a simple 2 seater with a bed and room for a dog or two.Maybe a radio..

I am in the market for a new truck but i absolutely refuse to be extorted to pay over sticker and actually won't pay that. Sure I may have to wait and shop around but so what. Dealer profits are at record highs in spite of low inventory because impatient consumers allow them to extort money from them. The markups over MSRP go straight to the dealers pocket. They are not paying the manufacturer one cent more than ever. I will keep driving what I have and trade on my terms or not at all. Greedy dealers can go to well you know where.

Agreed. I've paid sticker price for two cars that were in high demand and short supply, but that was years ago when you could buy a new car for less than $20K. I would never pay over sticker for ANY vehicle.

Me too…placed deposit in early December and took delivery mid-February. Paid MSRP but got $7k over the lease payoff balance on my 2020 RDX….crazy times!

Not a truck post but an example of the motor vehicle market out there. In 2016 we bought two Toyotas at the same time. A 2015 Sienna Limited Van (demo with 5,000 miles) for my wife and a 2016 V-6 Camry XLE for me. Got 0% financing for 60 months on both and they have been paid off for over a year. We are retired and don't drive as much anymore. Recently the Toyota dealer has called every few weeks wanting to buy them back! "Come in for a free appraisal"
Problem is you may get top dollar on the front end but the replacement will be more expensive so most of the time you are better off keeping what you have if it is reliable. Haven't seen the 0% financing by manufacturers for a while.

I don't know about other manufacturers, but being a Dodge Ram kinda guy for the last 20 plus years, I ordered a new Ram 3500 dually ... I ordered from my local dealer and was able to get almost 5% off MSRP after bringing a quote from a distant out of state dealer. Now if you guys want a Dodge, there's a dealer in Louisiana that is giving 10-11% off MSRP. I found them on the RAMCHAT forum ... that comes out to over $10,000 off sticker for my truck .. I'll spend the money to fly down from Mass and drive it back or have it shipped and still be miles ahead money wise .. of course there is a 2-4 month build time.. fine by me, have to generate the cash to pay for it .. if anyone is interested PM me.. for more details..

Fixer Uppers
Congratulations to all for buying your new
Vehicles.
I foresee ordering Vehicles will be the wave
of the future.
I have circa 2000 Pickups that I just keep
fix’n up when need be. I definitely won’t
be giving in to those high prices.
With Electric Vehicles increasing becoming
mandatory and fossil fuels banned in the
near future, I’ll will unfortunately have to
give in, and be money ahead.

Pickup trucks sure can be useful sometimes. If I need one I go to U-Haul and rent one for a few hours. In the last 5 years I doubt I gave U-Haul enough money to even make a single payment on a new truck.

Would I like a new fance bells and whistles truck...of course I would, but I'm not gonna buy into the madness going on now-just ain't gonna do it.

I've done some window shopping too. I figure for what they want for a stripped work truck, I can do a frame off restoration and drop in a new power train. With money left over.

Stopped in at the Honda dealership to look at their new Ridgeline. Interesting concept. Liked the interior. Liked the bed, although shallow in depth. Was very intrigued with the "trunk" for storage. Perfect light duty pickup with all wheel drive. I liked everything about it except for the 5k towing capacity. My 19' Guardian is at the top of that range although it would be perfect for the 13' whaler.
The salesman pointed out the place on the bed that was reinforced for a 5th wheel set up in the owner wanted. I looked at him ans asked why in the flying fandago would someone want a 5th wheel set up in a 5k capacity truck???? He shrugged, smiled and said that he gets that question a lot.
The new CR-V looked nice for the wife though and I could consider bighting for the price.. That way I could keep old blue for the heavy duty stuff and for me and feel comfortable that the spousal unit is in a new vehicle

It's not a good time to buy new vehicles. I have a 2020 Chevy Colorado that is full of features that the 2022's don't always have because of the chip shortage. Things like heated seats, heated steering wheel (both of which I love) aren't always available.
|
Why would you need a heated steering wheel in North Mississippi?
You should have what you like, but just curious.
