And Now the Fun Begins!
Just received my "credentials" as a newbie hunter education instructor for the Great State of Texas.
Two times in the past year I've signed my 15 year old son up for the outdoor "field" portion of the course (he completed the "classroom" portion on-line) only to see both of them cancelled. We didn't know one of them was cancelled until we drove over two hours to get there.
Got me to thinking how many local kids and young adults from my area experience hardship getting to a class. The solution seemed to be getting qualified myself thus ensuring access to the program locally. Our county game warden was a great help. We sure don't want new hunters facing any kind of barriers so easy to overcome.
The last class I participated in was a good three hour plus drive for me (not a big deal in Texas really). I had the distinction of being the oldest member of the class at 64. That kind of thing seems to be getting more common.
I plan to assist some experienced instructors soon to get some additional education and confidence in my new endeavor. As much work as it was to get qualified I have a feeling the work is just beginning but I'm excited about it.

Very cool. The barriers are unfortunately real, i got lucky taking hunters safety a couple years ago while CO was doing it online only.
My father is trying to get his in the northeast and kept running into full classes or cancelled classes over months until he just decided not to bother.

The old saying is true, that's why it's old. If you want something done right (or at all), you have to do it yourself. Good on ya!

Congratulations! I taught Hunter Safety for 28 years. Got qualified right after our oldest son took the class. He was only nine years old, but he had a strong interest in firearms so I wanted to be sure he was taught correctly. He passed the test at age nine, but I made him take it again at age twelve when he was old enough to obtain a hunting license. I did that with all of our children....making them take the course twice before getting their license.
Again, congratulations. I think you'll really enjoy your experience.

Good on 'ya! I still remember my Hunter Safety Class. Still have the patch. Those kids will remember you.
