50 years ago today, I recently read online today, Doc Ellis’ famous LSD no hitter happened vs San Diego. I was just a 13 year old punk, but at the time that news wasn’t out yet. Seems like everyone in MLB was high on something. I can believe the story of the acid no-no, but I also wonder because he became an anti drug & alcohol spokesperson after he retired. I’m not sure of the timelines for when the story came out from him and his being a spokesperson. I’ve done things I’m not proud of but I won’t deny anything I did 40+ years ago. It’s just a strange story that I know could be possible, but it’s debatable.
I know he got kicked off the field for mouthing at an ump from the dugout. Ump went over and asked What’s your problem? You aren’t even playing. Doc responded with Hey, there’s a party over on the Hill (Hill District section of PGH.) I’m missing. Ump responded with You’re outta here!!!
Strange sports stories that most of those guys back then, if still alive, would not want to be proud of now. “Don’t do this at home” to the nth degree.
I’m very glad I got that life out of my system and became a responsible citizen. I know I’d be dead and would miss the life I have now.
Edit #2: It was 1970, not '73, so that 50 year was wrong; it was 53 years. It's just the date, 06/12/1970. Just another June date of importance only to some baseball fans. Actually, the only significance is a no-hitter pitched by Doc Ellis. (That math thing again...)
