Default Well,,There goes the Syracuse NY Gun Show I fear.

Visited the Syracuse NY Gun show on Sat.
The crowd at the opening bell on Sat was like a late Sunday afternoon. Pretty much stayed like that the whole day.
Lots of none gun stuff and some empty tables too.

The new NYSP point of contact for NICS firearms and ammo background checks was in effect and I think that kept many away.

State charges the FFL by the month for each phone call to the NYSP tel# for background check. Same number for either.
The dealer gets hit for $2.50 if it's an Ammo B/G check. $9.00 if a firearms BG check.
Of course the cost gets passed on.
At this show, the Booths set up by the Show to handle the BG checks charged $10 for an ammo BG check and $30 for a gun BG check.

A $5 box of .22's cost $15! Better buy in quantity..

All of the Show Directors have 'retired' except 2
They are closing down the New York State Arms Collectors Assn as it is.
They accepted no membership renewals at the show for next yr.

The Two remaining directors are starting a 'new' gun show. I think it's to be named the Western NY Sportsman's Show or something like that.

Their Albany NY show this January cancelled.

The existing membership rolls from NYS Arms Collectors Assn will (I was told by one of above 2 directors) be sending out info on the new Show around Jan 1.
They hope there will be an April show in Syracuse under the new name.
Not sure if they have plans to bring the Albany NY January show back to life.
That's in the same building as the Governor's office. So I'm not too hopeful of that one. I'm surprised it's been there this long.

If the crowd takes to the new look like I saw on Sat, it'll be short lived.
Shops closing, shows closing down.

I bought 3 holsters though for my 200mi round trip!

You know, I'd rather be under "direct attack" by "Moms for/against" or "Everyfool gunhaters" than sneak attack by shady .gov types. The old saying: "Money talks and bullsteak walks" sure goes here. We must endeavor to persevere. Joe

No laws against gun shows in Texas, but since their re-opening after Covid, the few local gun shows I have attended were so ****** and expensive that I will probably never bother go to another one. I have more than enough guns and ammo that I don't need to anyway. I need to be selling, not buying.

There was an article about it in the bi-weekly NY Outdoor News today. The new lady in charge of vendors and promotions said vendors started pulling out 2 weeks ago. New check system went into effect on the 13th. NY made the “ guidance manual” available on the 12th. Simple long gun transfer checks took up to 45 min.rather than speak to someone and give buyers info from 4473 you now have to type it in. A big problem was their “system” didn’t recognize some manufacturers and you’d have to start all over.

I drove to Syracuse only once for the gun show.....some years ago. What I found were prices that exceeded those in the Western End of the state.

I was at the Hamburg, NY gun show a week ago. Just a few days before the 13th deadline. I saw poor prices on firearms, and nobody was buying. HOWEVER, it looked like everyone exiting the show was carrying ammo.

Wally World .22s were selling at about a 50% premium. Moron buyers for sure because you could buy them at Wally with no current limit. Wally had AMPLE inventory.

Only one vendor had primers, selling at $125. What amazed me was the fact that the boxes were old stock and the cardboard was all banged up.

My camp is in a very rural area with few people, yet we have a Running's. To my amazement they had primers in stock at a "reasonable" inflation price, but not gouging. The counter guy asked me how many sleeves I wanted....hahaha. I bought every brick he had. No limit. I'm good now. Probably will take me to 90 (years old that is).

Gotta be prepared. Even if it takes several SS checks.....

Seems gun shows in general are going down hill. Smaller and fewer dealers, attendees will fall off pretty quick. Sadly the demise of gun shows is largely due to way to many “ promoters” having many shows every month. People just don’ t have the $$$ to spend.

The Pa gun shows are starting to see more table holders and customers from NY. Especially the Allentown collector show.

Do you think its because of the new regs?
Or more the quality of some of our shows.

Besides the political attacks on gun ownership affecting turnout for gun shows the economy isn't helping much either. I am a regular table holder at the Ohio Gun Collectors shows and over the last few shows I have noticed a significant drop off in attendance. In addition there seems to be less and less money exchanging hands as well. Other table holders I talk to are saying the same thing. People just aren't buying things like they used to do. Reports from other shows seem to be reflecting the same issue. When people are feeling the pinch they get tight with their money. May not buy that nice antique, the new gun they saw or the ammo and accessories to go with it.

Sad to hear about a long time Collectors organization going under. Between a sagging economy and new antigun restrictions I fear more will follow. Just the economic factor reduces people attending shows and that starts to affect the number of table holders. Which results in less to see or consider buying and fewer people bother to spend the time and money to come back. States passing ever more restrictive laws such as NY has done compounds the problem. Even gun friendly states are facing a constant push by the anti-gun crowd. Not a good sign for the future of gun shows and gun collector clubs sadly.

This last Big Reno Show was a "make or break" deal for me. The participation over the past 7-8 years has been in steady decline after leaving its original venue at the GSR/Hilton/MGM. At the April show there were only a few of us in line for the Saturday opening. Dealers were actually outside the hall in search of guns 60 minutes before opening. Traditionally, the line was loooong. I decided to go last month to give it one more try. Although not the same as in years past, I was pleasantly surprised, enough so I'll go again November. Interestingly, I find more interesting guns and better prices at the local Reno, Carson City LGS. The easter egg hunt continues.

I used to like the shows at the South Point in Vegas, but those seem to have gone away. Went to Cashman Center once back in the day, but didn't appreciate the gouging for parking. Last show I went to was at the Speedway. Didn't buy anything, but there was plenty for those with a need and money. My finances are committed elsewhere just now, so searching out gun shows is not high on the to-do list, sadly.

As far as the new regs..I would make a somewhat long drive into Pa when I needed ammo. Go to Wally get 22s. Go wherever to get centerfire. I would refuse to pay the fees to NY and have them know what I have. Next I would be finding a way to move out of that state. The Sportsmans Assoc. Need to take the state to court over these infringements.

I do gunshows and go tothem. What has really changed is most shows are attended by dealers these dys. And they all want to price their things at the online dealers prices of Gunbroker etc...without paying their fees. Local small gun shows still have some people selling their excess stuff...

I also hate parking fees. The convention centers are the only venues in Vegas and Reno that charge. $10 is crazy. In Reno there's plenty of parking within a short walk, not so in Vegas. After the Westgate Collectors Show, the Speedway show has become my favorite show in the Vegas area. We'll have to hook up for a cup. I am also a fellow shutterbug.

That’s a shame but seems certain states with a certain mindset will loose gun freedoms first. The rest will have a path to follow. The wave of the future. Thank God for level headed thinking in Ohio, Larry

Gun show facts (Fl local mostly):
1) Owner/promoter SETS prices that cause vapors. No amount of hunker/dicker will get to reasonable. Recent example: used S&W Model 640 no-dash .38, $1300. Lets round a "20% discount" to $300. Even with a H/D further drop you're paying $800 at best. I smell chili-cheese-fries.
2) $13 admit (OK, the Lakeland show was $12). Bring a guest and you are out $26 going in. Those chili-cheese-fries were $14 each with an unsweet tea.
3) No "private sales." They ain't fooling, a buddy in SW Florida got a "trespass citation" for bringing a gun to the show. No action=no reason to go.
4) I spent $80 in gas for 2 cars and $164 in groceries yesterday at the "WalMart Neighborhood Store." 3 years ago the total would have been $100 less. That's $100 less to spend at the show. Next show is in 3 weeks, that'll be $300 less "disposable $$$" for the show.
5)There's a gun show within 1 1/2 hour drive (80% within half hour) every 6 weeks. See #4 for downside.
There's more but I'm starting to get cranky. Joe

I’ve said it a hundred times NY residents will simply head south or west to PA. And with them they’ll take all the sales tax revenue that NY could have collected. Guys with hunting camps are especially close to the border……. When the gas stove ban eliminates the sale of them in NY , I’ll be heading to Erie Pa with my 18’ tandem trailer.

Heh-heh, it's 80* outside right now. In January it'll still be 80* while you are out "plowing the weather." Joe

I was at camp last weekend. With my new lawn tractor I can cut the grass in about 25 minutes with no sweat involved.

After that chore I decided to go to the pond and throw around a barbless lure. Got a largemouth bass on every single cast. Of course I put may babies back in the water.

A half hour later I was swinging on my wife's swing while drinking a beer. A mom and 2 fawns plus a nice 8-pointer sauntered right by me.

A check of one of my trail cams revealed a whole flock of turkeys.

My neighbor up the road keeps an eye on the property. He beeps as he drives by if he sees my gate open. Then I can be sure in a few minutes he'll be coming over with a cooler of beer.

My Great Uncle often talked about his Mauser that he picked up for free from his local Post Office after WWI. Then he recalls about when it was confiscated from him in about 1935. Soon after he emigrated to the USA and soon became a citizen. As much as he loved America he often talked about missing his homeland.

A relative moved down south. He has a beautiful home and no gun restrictions. But, OTOH, lots of people, no open rural land, dirty waterways and not many places to shoot. Besides the cost of living far exceeds NY.

I applaud all NYers that leave. More room for us. But, I ain't going.

I'll probably be plowing snow next month, if not this month. But since there are only three gun shows up here a year it don't matter. Enjoy Your weather.

I moved out of Maryland in 2005 and into PA and the gun laws in Maryland have proceeded to get worse. I'm glad I moved when I did.

If the admission charges to gun shows get any worse I'll have to carry my Golden Dollars in a wheelbarrow to get in.

The way I read the title made me think that I've never been afraid of a gun show and if I was afraid, I would like to see it go away. At least out of sight, if not out of state.

Glad that Ilived when I did. Wondering when testosterone will be illegal and lipstick, high heels and skirts become mandatory for everyone.

I must say, I love New York for its' beauty. Ausable Chasm, Cooperstown, Cherry Valley, trapshooting at the NY State Home Grounds in Bridgeport, and playing golf on a mountain course in Margaretville, but I just would not want to live there

I was an OGCA member for about 40 years. I gave up on it due to the Directors.
They got the prime tables by the entrance and always bought the good stuff coming into the show. I also did not like the ,direction the show was going. Since most of the Directors lived in the Southern or Central part of the State, they had no interest in getting a show venue up North. The shows at the old tank plant by the airport were great, but the **** Directors decided not to have the shows there anymore and went to Wilmington instead. It was a 3 hour drive or more for me, and I only went once. Cancelled my membership and have no regrets about doing so.

Probably because New York City and Syracuse control the votes, just like Chicago does in Illinois.
