Robinson won 16 Gold Glove Awards and was an 18-time All-Star

The Baltimore Orioles announced Tuesday that franchise legend Brooks Robinson has died at the age of 86.

Nicknamed "the Human Vacuum Cleaner," Robinson is perhaps the greatest defensive third baseman in the history of baseball, winning 16 Gold Glove Awards in his Hall of Fame career, all of which came consecutively.

Robinson won two World Series and was named an All-Star 18 times.

...

He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983, earning 91.98% of the vote on his first ballot. Robinson was named to the MLB All-Century Team in 1999, and his No. 5 is retired by the organization.

A truly gifted athlete who was also one of baseball's greatest ambassadors and a stellar human being...

My ex-wife is a nurse, and has worked for many years in a large suburban Baltimore hospital.

Just after he retired from the Orioles, Brooks Robinson brought one of his kids into the ER for treatment. My wife offered to let Mr. Robinson accompany his child into the treatment area, even though that normally wasn't permitted, because if he stayed in the waiting room he wouldn't have a moment's peace.

He told her he didn't want any special treatment, that he was just another parent, and he remained in the waiting room and signed autographs while his child was being treated.

Brooks Robinson was a treasure. His passing was the lead story on this evening's local news, and everyone here is in mourning. Many he rest in peace, and may his memory always be a blessing... :(

Amazing ball player and to me the greatest 3baseman!
Watched him as a youngster when we lived in a Glen Burnie.

My folks used to shop in Glen Burnie. I lived in Severn, back when it was semi-rural.

My mom's first cousin and his brother-in-law would come by my great grandmother's house and we would all listen to the O's games on the radio.
