Drink a lot of water or else
I spent three days in the hospital last week. It seems my bladder backup and caused my kidneys to go on the verge of failing. They pumped a lot of water into me me and got my kidneys back to what they were before I went in.
The other strange thing was the night before I called EMS, I went to get up from sitting and my legs gave out, nada, could not stand up.
So drinking a lot of water. My legs started working but I'm using a walker to motor around.
Seventy-seven seems to be when things go south. Take care of yourselves.

That's good advice on keeping yourself hydrated. I've been realizing I need to do that myself. As a former EMT/ambulance guy, I saw a LOT of seniors get themselves in trouble by not drinking enough water. Hang in there buddy ..... and thanks for the reminder!

Absolutely. At one time my GFR was 37. Now it's around 77. Not bad for 75 years old. Stay away from NSAIDs as well. Bad for the kidneys.

I don't take much stuff for life's everyday aches and pains.
When I do a nurse friend talked me into using Naproxen (generic Aleve). She claims it's easier on the organs than the rest. My doc says they're all about the same, but Naproxen really works best for me.
Drink up!!
Between one and two gallons of water a day is my routine.

With all the conflicting advice, it’s hard to know what to do. I have always heard hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Now my cardiologist has me on Lasix. I feel like a race horse, if you know what I mean.
If my cardiologist met my nephrologist, somebody would get their butt kicked, I just don’t know which one.

My sister had some kidney issues and while she was waiting for the next test a few weeks later she drank a ton of water and after the last test doctor told her kidneys were spotless.
I suppose I should do that instead of beer.

Yes, I've been to the hospital for dehydration once. It's not fun.
Most of us are drinking filtered water these days, be it bottled, or from a home system. However, R/O water is stripped of all minerals, and is acidic. It's also not as refreshing. Consider adding electrolytes to your water, and you will see it makes a huge difference.
On the basic, simple-end: Shake a wee bit of pink himalayan, or sea salt into your water. Not plain white and iodized Morton. A pinch of baking soda can work, too. I mix-up a shaker with about 70% Himalayan, and 15/15 of baking soda, and 'NO-Salt' substitute. If you want something more certain, there are electrolyte powders you can order for greater consistency.
I don't mind the taste if I have added a bit too much. If you think you overdid it, just add more water.

Since my heart surgery a year ago, I religiously drink 3 quarts or more a day from the calibrated one quart pitcher-with-a-straw I brought home from the hospital.
My eGFR has gone from 44 to 67, a huge improvement.
And +++ on NSAIDs, just say no!

Water? What is that? Yesterday, I picked up two 1.75 liter bottles of Dickel 12, and today, my gal came over with ANOTHER two big bottles of Dickel! I'm so glad she doesn't drink!
Lot of contradictory data on hydration. Just read a long article on the topic. Eight glasses can be overdoing it, while older folks customarily drink less fluids. Other liquids can provide water, stated the article, including coffee, tea, juice, soda, beer and the many H2O beverages. Some fruits are mostly water, watermelon, cantaloupe (hate both).
One final thought: just try drinking 8 glasses daily when you're incontinent. I'll leave it at that. Bottoms up!

Glad you are doing better.
Recently came close to losing an older relative that got sick; not due to the cold/sickness...but dehydration. They forgot to drink water and it came close enough to be scary.

Most popular American beers are at least 90% water.
24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Not a coincidence, in my opinion. Probably a divine revelation, or a very simple instruction manual.
According to Benjamin Franklin, beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

Ruthie has a horse shoe kidney. They never separated. Her left kidney drug the right one down and turned it upside down. She has one operable kidney. She has fought the battle of the stones for a long time. Since we have been married she has been hospitalized six times.
She now only drinks hot tea and a gallon of water every day. She also avoids foods containing oxalic acid. She has kept the stones at bay for several years now so it must work.
I have had only one bout in my life with kidney stones. In 2001 I was on stage and couldn't finish the set. I was transported to a hospital. That is a pain like no other.
Like Ray said beer must work as I have not had a reoccurance.

My 1st stone was at 18 years old. Years later I got one and drank a bunch of Cranberry juice (with gin) and actually passed it at a bar. The last one really sucked pine cones. It took two trips to get it all out. Thank God for chemicals. They said I have horseshoe kidney, but none of that they never separated.
Get a stint removed while you're awake and nothing to lighten you up! He actually used those mechanical fingers like you use to pick up a dropped nut on the motor. Worst 45 seconds of my life.

What does GFR stand for?
Never mind, the wife knew what it meant.
For minor pain relief get some Willow Bark, it is the original aspirin before all the chemicals were added.

I'm taking one 200mg Celebrex a day. My primary tells me not to take them every day. My oncologist says to take one every day to reduce inflammation from from the radiation zaps I get every day. I just did zap 28 of 35. It will be interesting to see what my kidney function is when I'm done. Yeah, getting old definitely tends to be inconvenient. Beats the alternative, so far.

There is such a thing as drinking too much water.

It's the old story of "moderation in all things". Too much aspirin gives me nose bleeds, a weakness passed down from my father. Acetaminophen will certainly jack up your liver if you OD, but taking a couple say three or four times in a year to shake a sinus headache isn't going to do any damage.
I find that ibuprofen works better on muscle pain, but too much and my digestive system starts a go slow. Dentist had me on opiods years ago prior to a root canal and that stopped the work 100%. I had a major wisdom tooth removal a few years back, swelled up to the full Elephant Man look. However, I took only one of the prescribed pills just to get me off to sleep the first night. Wasn't going to have that backed up nonsense again.

which is why I get percocet 10's for pain rather than 5's or 7.5's for dental work-only need a couple to get me through the initial pain but when I NEED them , I need them. Doubling up on them is what gets you in trouble with the Acetaminophen. Like Hunter Thompson, I take my drug intake seriously

We bought a Berkey Water Purifer a couple of years ago. It's improved the taste of our tap water significantly. I drink almost a gallon a day

I second that...
After some serious gastric disturbances put me in the hospital with dehydration, and a series of doctors coming in telling me my kidneys failed, I figured I would be on dialysis or dead. But a miracle occured and my kidneys came back. Apparently I had gotten hooked up to the fluids in time. If you start showing signs of dehydration, GET TO A HOSPITAL FAST!!!!
PS: At the time it was a teaching hospital, and I don't think that the doctors thought that I realized that my condition was serious. Finally I told them, "I know it's terrible, but what's the use of crying about it now???"

Have gone through my kidneys failing, and only have 50% kidney function. Force myself to drink more water. However am older, and find it to be a matter of timing for what i want to do. Also suffer from gout, but have learned to seriously douse myself with water when feeling a bout starting. Repeated trips to the bathroom are more pleasant than a bout of gout.
Am also a contrarian, and believe any liquid (coffe/soda) does not replace water. Coffee is a diuretic, and imo displaces more water than it provides.

When I do a nurse friend talked me into using Naproxen (generic Aleve). She claims it's easier on the organs than the rest. My doc says they're all about the same, but Naproxen really works best for me.
Drink up!!
Between one and two gallons of water a day is my routine.

Naproxen is what damaged my kidneys. I was taking it for a bad shoulder. Be careful. My kidney damage was minimal only because my doc does annual blood work and founf it soon enough to regain most of the function.

Be very careful with arthritis strength Tylenol, it'll wreck your liver. BTDT is how I know, got my liver enzymes all out of whack and I felt terrible till I stopped the arthritis strength Tylenol.

Take your weight in pounds, divide by two and convert that to ounces. According to my good friend and naturopath, that is the key to good overall health.
For some of us that is a ton of water, I try and fail from time to time. I make a point of drinking a large glass (16oz) of room temperature water with my morning meds upon rising, at least a couple of those or their equivalent if out of the house, bottled water usually and the same thing before hitting the rack with my evening meds. Drinking water before bed usually leads to a trip to the can around 2-3 am. Drinking water before bed is highly recommended for people with any heart issues.
If you ever find yourself thirsty, that's your body screaming out for water, most of us are walking around in a semi dehydrated state. Other fluids do not count towards your goal and anything alcoholic works the other way as does caffeine. It ain't fun but drink more water, thats the ticket. I've had at least four or five friends end up with stones from never drinking water, one friend claimed to never remember drinking plain water, just drank soft drinks, coffee, beer, etc. My wife drinks a gallon of water a day, she does all my heavy lifting.

Im my case, medical mortification. Mine has been in the low single digits for a couple years. I spend 11+ hours of every 24 doing peritoneal dialysis, pending a transplant.

beer is actually a great sports/exercise/hard work recovery drink. If it a basic Amertican "3.2%" beer, it has easily digestible carbs and is mostly water. The alcohol gets converted into sugars.
Bud/Miller/Coors Lite or something similar.

My pee is so clear I wonder if sometimes I'm drinking too much straight water.
