I spent three days in the hospital last week. It seems my bladder backup and caused my kidneys to go on the verge of failing. They pumped a lot of water into me me and got my kidneys back to what they were before I went in.
The other strange thing was the night before I called EMS, I went to get up from sitting and my legs gave out, nada, could not stand up.
So drinking a lot of water. My legs started working but I'm using a walker to motor around.
Seventy-seven seems to be when things go south. Take care of yourselves.

I don't take much stuff for life's everyday aches and pains.

When I do a nurse friend talked me into using Naproxen (generic Aleve). She claims it's easier on the organs than the rest. My doc says they're all about the same, but Naproxen really works best for me.

Drink up!!

Between one and two gallons of water a day is my routine.

With all the conflicting advice, it's hard to know what to do. I have always heard hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Now my cardiologist has me on Lasix. I feel like a race horse, if you know what I mean.
If my cardiologist met my nephrologist, somebody would get their butt kicked, I just don't know which one.

Yes, I've been to the hospital for dehydration once. It's not fun.
Most of us are drinking filtered water these days, be it bottled, or from a home system. However, R/O water is stripped of all minerals, and is acidic. It's also not as refreshing. Consider adding electrolytes to your water, and you will see it makes a huge difference.

On the basic, simple-end: Shake a wee bit of pink himalayan, or sea salt into your water. Not plain white and iodized Morton. A pinch of baking soda can work, too. I mix-up a shaker with about 70% Himalayan, and 15/15 of baking soda, and 'NO-Salt' substitute. If you want something more certain, there are electrolyte powders you can order for greater consistency.

I don't mind the taste if I have added a bit too much. If you think you overdid it, just add more water.

That is why I always include ice with my whiskey :).

Seriously that is good advice. Best of luck my friend.

Water? What is that?:D Yesterday, I picked up two 1.75 liter bottles of Dickel 12, and today, my gal came over with ANOTHER two big bottles of Dickel! I'm so glad she doesn't drink!

Lot of contradictory data on hydration. Just read a long article on the topic. Eight glasses can be overdoing it, while older folks customarily drink less fluids. Other liquids can provide water, stated the article, including coffee, tea, juice, soda, beer and the many H2O beverages. Some fruits are mostly water, watermelon, cantaloupe (hate both).

One final thought: just try drinking 8 glasses daily when you're incontinent. I'll leave it at that. Bottoms up!

Glad you are doing better.

Recently came close to losing an older relative that got sick; not due to the cold/sickness...but dehydration. They forgot to drink water and it came close enough to be scary.

Most popular American beers are at least 90% water.

24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Not a coincidence, in my opinion. Probably a divine revelation, or a very simple instruction manual.

According to Benjamin Franklin, beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

Ruthie has a horse shoe kidney. They never separated. Her left kidney drug the right one down and turned it upside down. She has one operable kidney. She has fought the battle of the stones for a long time. Since we have been married she has been hospitalized six times.

She now only drinks hot tea and a gallon of water every day. She also avoids foods containing oxalic acid. She has kept the stones at bay for several years now so it must work.

I have had only one bout in my life with kidney stones. In 2001 I was on stage and couldn't finish the set. I was transported to a hospital. That is a pain like no other.

Like Ray said beer must work as I have not had a reoccurance.

My 1st stone was at 18 years old. Years later I got one and drank a bunch of Cranberry juice (with gin) and actually passed it at a bar. The last one really sucked pine cones. It took two trips to get it all out. Thank God for chemicals. They said I have horseshoe kidney, but none of that they never separated.
Get a stint removed while you're awake and nothing to lighten you up! He actually used those mechanical fingers like you use to pick up a dropped nut on the motor. Worst 45 seconds of my life.

Am I the only person who takes good old fashioned aspirin for occasional aches and pains? Acetaminophen with its risks to liver function scared the snot out of me and I try not to take it.

My sister had some kidney issues and while she was waiting for the next test a few weeks later she drank a ton of water and after the last test doctor told her kidneys were spotless.
I suppose I should do that instead of beer.

Beer has a lot of water in it....

Absolutely. At one time my GFR was 37. Now it's around 77. Not bad for 75 years old. Stay away from NSAIDs as well. Bad for the kidneys.

What does GFR stand for?
Never mind, the wife knew what it meant.

For minor pain relief get some Willow Bark, it is the original aspirin before all the chemicals were added.

I'm taking one 200mg Celebrex a day. My primary tells me not to take them every day. My oncologist says to take one every day to reduce inflammation from from the radiation zaps I get every day. I just did zap 28 of 35. It will be interesting to see what my kidney function is when I'm done. Yeah, getting old definitely tends to be inconvenient. Beats the alternative, so far.
