First Hummingbird of the year!
They have made it to these parts a few weeks ago, but I just saw my first one hovering around a holder where I usually have a feeder hanging.
It is simply amazing something so small travels so far then returns to the exact spot where it fed the summer before!
As I am typing this I have the sugar water boiling and the feeders out for filling.

I'm uncertain if the ones I've been feeding all winter are a hardy perennial group or birds that migrated down here from further north. Most appear to be Anna's Hummingbird. Got a couple of decent snaps of a Costas' Hummingbird yesterday on one of the feeders. I should get them out of the camera and post them here.

like to see pictures. when I lived in S.C. the same green/ female came back for 6 years. had a feeder 1 in front and 1 in back, it seemed she was always at both feeders at the same time. so I moved the front one to the back, she would sit in a tree and keep most of the other hummingbirds away.

I know they're around south Fla. but never have seen one until sitting out back two weeks ago I thought dragonfly out of the corner of my eye which was odd because they're not quite around yet but when I glanced over saw a hummer hover for a half second before disappearing.
Now there is at least one making regular appearances sipping from the purple salvia growing along the back fence. Don't know the species, straight beak with gray head, green back and cream colored breast.

One of mum's greatest joys was sitting out back watching the squirrels and songbirds visiting the feeders in her rock/flower garden
In the afternoons she would sit on her front porch with a cuppa and watch the hummingbird ballet thanks to the two feeders Fred sent to her.

I usually have a few Orioles that hang around my feeders on their break for a few days during their migration. I suppose it's time to set them out now.
The stupid stink bug infestation of a few years back destroyed about all the flower bushes so I don't see as many hummingbirds as before.

We will put out nectar and fruit in two weeks when we return from a business trip to Chicago.
Always like watching the birds.

noticed last year several stopped at the feeder just before dark, their tree/nest is just out of the yard. have a set of sun glasses w/ a mirror finish, have had the HB's fly to within inches of them and look at their reflection., if you move the head their gone as fast as they came.

We put out a feeder this morning and had our first male ruby throat in less than 5 minutes!

I've been waiting on April to get here before I put ours out. Since it has arriven they will go out today. We had 4-8 at a time buzzing our feeders last year (we moved on the outskirts of Memphis). I think I've read that they remember where they fed the year before so hopefuly they will be back. We found little finger flower feeders last year at Wally World that you wear like a ring. I'll be trying those out! I never tire of watching these hummers.

I put up three as far apart as I could and tried to block the sight lines between them. Did very little to cut down the aerial combat.

I got on the R/T Hummingbird migration map. Seems like they are a few days or so away from looking for a meal here. Then I looked to see how far they can travel in a day and the answer came up that they can travel 500 miles in a day over the Gulf of Mexico. I'm amazed just watching them in the yard, but the more I learn about these little guys I realize they are heavy weights!
