For half a million I am not surprised it has been listed for a while, previous owner notwithstanding.

Maybe they should list it with Rock Island Auctions? I can see Kevin Hogan doing a video tour of the property.

The seller has done a poor job to say the least promoting the place....very few photos of the outside and NONE of the inside.
I have been in touch with them and made the suggestion to embelish the listing.
I am thinking they are NOT fans or Elmer or they have no idea who he was!!
That said, Elmer did not have a lot of fans in this town......besides a small display in the town museum, you would'nt even know he lived here!!

A home just around the corner from Elmer's here in Salmon recently sold for $489K.....ridiculous for this area, but seems to be the trend in these remote litte sections of the country unfortunately.

I was by his little ranch in No. Fork while hunting several years back. A very small place for sure. He lived there before moving to Salmon.

Keith Lane it’s called
The place that his teenage daughter died when she became very sick and they could not get her to town because of a snow storm😔
They acutally sent young Ted Keith, who was about 9 years old at the time, walking down the highway to try and find help.
That's when Elmer's wife said "We are moving to town" so this never happens again.....hence the house that you see listed for sale.

Just wait for the California Horde to get the idea that living in a quiet, remote area (other than California) is the latest "thing" - prices will adjust.

No need to wait, they've been infesting Montana, Idaho and Utah for years.

Might be fun to walk around the property with a metal detector, he probably cast tens of thousands of bullets over the decades.

Zillow says its value is $327k, but it is listed at $515k?!?
Nearly $200k (40%) premium for the "provenance" of being Elmer's last home? Not even the place where he grew up?
Not for me (or for any other buyers - or so it would seem).

Not where he grew up, but the last place that he lived......but that said, the seller does not even mention Elmer or his legacy.
However most folks moving to Salmon these days are sadly not on the conservative side of the aisle and would not have a clue who Elmer was!
I also saw the Zillow report of value at $327K......I think given the market they MIGHT get close to $400K at best......stay tuned!

To us, Elmer was part of our hobby and most everyone here knew about him and his colorful exploits. To someone just looking for a home, the name Elmer Keith means nothing!
From the pictures, the house is rather old and in need of repair (look closely). I doubt that with the .39 acre is comes with you could even shoot on your own property. If it had more land, maybe it would be an attractive offer but as it is - not so much.
I have no idea what the properties and homes sell for there, but it seems a bit high for what it is.

At $515,000 it's about $450,000 (+ or -) more than it's worth, IMHO.

As a comparison, I sold a house 120 miles up the road in Missoula in 2006. Price was $255K. It recently sold for $825K. I know of a 20 acre lot that sold for $43K 7 years ago, current listing is over $200K. No idea where Montana's kids are going to live but it is looking very unlikely that they will own their homes.

We have been trying to find a home in Ravalli County (South of Missoula County) for a while now and have pretty much given up......will now try to find someone willing to shake loose a couple of acres so I can build a place here in the Salmon area. I expect to pay in the $30K per acre range IF I can even find a piece!

I agree nobody knows or cares who Elmer Keith is. It’d be like us knowing who designed the blow dryer. I would have thought an avid shooter would have some acreage and a range.

With a house taking up much of that rather small piece of land about the only thing that could be safely shot there is darts!

Elmer still owned his small ranch out near Gibbonsville when he lived in town
He also did a fair amount of shooting on public land as well as the range on the land of a local gunsmith
We have no shortage of places to shoot in Lemhi county

The former USA will never be the same. Very tragic. Soon it won't matter where you live, it will be hell compared to what we once knew.

Oh I realized that Elmer had to have good local places to shoot. I was just answering the "I doubt that with the .39 acre is comes with you could even shoot on your own property"
That piece of property is quite small. Up where I live a 100' square is common for many older lake side camps. Put a camp on it and parking for a few cars and its quite restricted.

Might be worth the price if they could guarantee it was haunted by Elmer.

If you dropped this house in my neighborhood, it'd be $1 million plus.

Home prices these days are astonishing. I have friends who live in the Virginia counties west of Washington, D.C. (Fairfax and Loudon). Forty year-old 2200 square foot tract homes on 1/5-acre lots are selling in the mid-800s (with property taxes of more than $12,000 per year). New condos are around $500,000.
I realize these things are relative, but I can't imagine how young people or retirees on fixed incomes are able to buy at those prices. Wow...
