Basically it's the Scoville (sp?) Heat Units in the spray. Bears get more, they don't have defense/personal injury attorneys. Different brands probably have different ratings. Check the labels-although in many cases they just give % of OC, not the heat rating. Hint: pros using OC spray on humans have a cover officer with a gun JIC the spray doesn't work. What's your plan B with not so Gentle Ben?

I had an accidental discharge of bear spray in the consol of my truck not too long ago. Just the residue from a tiny little squirt was enough that I could feel it for weeks afterward just by grabbing my flashlight or anything from inside the box and then absent-mindedly touch my face. That stuff is serious!

Most pepper spray sold on the commercial market is pretty weak compared to that sold for law enforcement. It's not referred to as "pepper spray" but "OC" spray...oleoresin capsicum...the active ingredient. OC spray is far stronger and intense...but I don't know the difference between it and bear spray. There must be a difference in the formula and container size. Most OC spray used in law enforcement is fairly small and light for belt carry along with all the other stuff an officer carries.

Sorry for the late reply and thank you. Actually, my concern is I take walks in the country and there bad dogs on every other property. I'm 6'2 280 lbs but getting old. Not sure I want to fight a dog anymore so I thought of pepper spray. Sorry, should have mentioned this from the get go. I don't carry a firearm on a walk but thought a pepper spray would do the job.

Just as with a sidearm, a secure, quick access holster is important with spray. I have UDAP brand. The textile holsters, IMO, if secure, are slow. Pocket carry is even slower.

I can't conceive of doing any ordinary activity without a sidearm, including hiking/walking. You can't make an appointment for an emergency.

Check you State laws. I did not know that Florida only allows a max of a 2oz can. bear sprays are larger.
