CAN'T GET PICTURES FROM CAMERA
Well, my Ludditeness has come to the fore. After years of being able to import pictures from my little Nikon camera to my laptop computer for adding into posts, I can't seem to import pictures between these things anymore. Microsoft supposedly came up with some new application for photos but kept the old one running. I tried to understand the procedure but it might as well have been written in Sanskrit. Is there something I'm missing? I can't post photos that I can't import.

Is there a teenager that lives near you?
Guaranteed they can solve your dilemma.

I'm a Mac guy but this was a good excuse to fire up my Dell laptop (Windows 10).
I don't use any partic. program to import files (pic or otherwise.) If you are plugging your camera card into your PC, does it not come up in File Explorer? You should be able to just drag and drop a file from the card to whatever folder/directory you want. Kinda guessing here, though...

Are you connecting the camera itself to a USB port, or are you plugging the memory card into a card reader attached to your computer? Do the pics show up in Windows Explorer?
If they do just click on them and drag them to the folder you want them in (while holding down the mouse button).
If not, you may have a bad USB cable or a bad card reader.

I'm a simple soul, I only connect the camera directly to the computer. The computer says it is importing the pictures but nothing shows up in the computer. Is a card reader a cheap fix or am I looking at a new computer?

If the PC says it's importing, presumably is recognizes that the camera is connected. Could be a bad cable as TX Dennis suggests. Could also be a bad or failing card in the camera. Can you preview the pics in the camera OK?
Do you have the option of taking the card out of the camera and plugging it in? (You'd likely need a card reader for this as I'd guess the card is a SD or micro SD?) If you can plug the card in and get the pics off, it might be worth reformatting the card in your PC to give it a "clean wipe." And/or trying a new card.
Highly unlikely that you'd need a new PC unless you're having a lot of other problems with it!
A card reader isn't a big expense and it would allow you to read other cards than the usual USB. This older MB Air has a SD slot but my Dell laptop doesn't so I have to use an external reader for cards from my trail cam and dash cam.

A card reader isn't terribly expensive, but you should be able to do this without one.
It sounds to me like you are using some type of software to imort the pictures. Try using just Windows Explorer. Under This PC you should see some drives. You'll definitely see Windows (C: ). If the camera is connected and powered on you should also see another drive letter (maybe E:, but it could be a different letter) Clicking on that letter should show you some folders. Try clicking on those folders until you find the one containing the pictures. Often that folder will be called DCIM or something similar. Once you find the right folder you can just click and hold the file name or thumbnail and drag it to wherever you want it on your computer.
Alternatively, you could try Microsoft's instructions
Import photos and videos - Microsoft Support
I'm not great at explaining things, but I do hope this will help you.

My granddaughter suggests you delete the new photo app and reinstall it.
I have no idea how to do that and she’s busy now with some video games.

I connect my Sony HandyCam to my computer via a usb cable. A window opens asking me what I want to do. Your computer shouldn't do anything until you tell it to. Start over one step at a time paying attention to what's happening in each step.
Another possibility from others advice is the pictures are there but you didn't look to see where they were put.

I wouldn't think that the Windows version makes a difference. The computer should recognize any device connected to one of it's USB ports. It's kind of a generic function built in and not relying on any particular software.
I could be wrong. I used to stay at the Holiday Inn overnight but they are all homeless shelters now.

Easiest way to transfer photos is through the card in camera. The photo apps aren't there to add any convenience. Most puters sold in the last eon have plug ins for the common cards. If your camera has a card, look for a port in puter that matches. Plug in card, hear beep, go to file directory and drag picture to your preferred directory.
Unfortunately you may need help to actually locate your directory structure anymore with all the "advances" made lately.
Please believe if i can do it, it ain't difficult. The directness of previous versions of windows has simply disappeared.

If the computer is saying it's storing them, it's storing them. You need to find out where it's storing them!

I simply select the picture I want and email them to myself. Them open my email with computer and download the pictures tuning them up before saving them in an appropriate folder.

From your phone or camera? Your camera must have a wi-fi or data connection (?) If you have a lot of pics to transfer and a fairly new camera, those files could be pretty big and take a while.
I can transfer pics from my iPhone and Mac laptop (and vice versa) as Apple has a program called AirDrop, but of course it ONLY works between Apple devices!
I'd guess Golddollar's problem is either the photos are beimg uploaded to a new, undisclosed location or there is a problem with either the cable or the card and the PC only thinks it's downloading. But how many likely places could there be? Photos/Pictures? Downloads? (Registry? )
