Insurance agents out for a day on Mississippi's Grenada Lake made the surprising find

Two friends from Arkansas and Tennessee recently decided to meet up in neighboring Mississippi for a day of fishing, but what they ended up pulling into their boat had more fur than gills and fins.

WMC and Fox News report that Brad Carlisle and Bob Gist, both State Farm insurance agents, recently headed to Grenada Lake with fishing guide Jordan Chrestman, and they weren't having much luck catching anything in the earlier part of the day. They moved to another spot, and "pretty soon we can hear some dogs barking," Gist tells Fox, adding that his group could see the pooches "on the horizon in the water."

As they pulled closer, the men were surprised to find dozens of "dogs everywhere," all wearing expensive GPS collars and with numbers painted on them, Gist tells the AP. "They were kind of swimming in circles and didn't know which direction to go." The men acted quickly, yanking the exhausted dogs one by one out of the water and into their bass boat. It took three trips back to shore to rescue all 38 dogs; by the time they'd finished their mission, some of the dogs had been treading water for 45 minutes to an hour. It turns out the dogs had been part of a fox hunt on land and had all leaped into the water while chasing a deer.

They were about a mile offshore, where their owners were frantically looking for them, when the fishermen stumbled upon the scene. Dogs can "follow game relentlessly, as in this case," Chris Gurner, a natural resource specialist with the US Army Corps of Engineers, tells the AP, though he adds it's not common for them to swim so far away from land. Gist is just glad they were where they were at the right moment. "Opportunities to help somebody are in front of us all the time," he says. "Sometimes if you see something, do something."

Many years ago I had a dog who loved the water, a mutt called Sam. Not a big dog but very muscular and athletic, unlike his master. If we got close to a river or lake, he would jump in and take a swim, often for long time periods. But he was always smart enough to return to shore after he had enough fun.

We had a black lab named, Duke. We went camping one time and camped alongside a creek where the road crossed. The creek went through about a 8-10 ft. diameter culvert. Upstream the water level was at about halfway up the culvert. Downstream it shot out of the pipe and fell into a pool about 5-6 feet below.
I was playing with a toy boat in an eddy and my boat wound up going down the creek. I was a little kid and a bit upset. Duke went in after my boat. After all, retrieving things from the water is his deal, right? He goes in and gets caught in the current, heading for the culvert.
My dad goes nuts, because those culverts have brush and limbs that stick in there and he's worried Duke will snag his collar and drown. Duke fights the current but gets swept into the culvert. Soon, he comes flying out the other side to drop into the pool. He swims to shore and immediately runs back above the culvert and jumps in again. Splash, spit, splash.
Rinse and repeat about 5 times before my dad was able to catch him. He stopped for a second, shook his head and took Duke's collar off and let him go. For about 2 hours that was one happy mutt. After he got tired, we put his collar back on and tied him up. It must have been funny to see a whole family just watching a dog make his own waterpark.:D
