Anyone had any experience with these? Have a coaxial air input/exhaust output that goes through the wall. Could be useful for an outbuilding/shop or backup heat in a small house w. whole-house battery system/generator as they don't draw much power aside from 240W igniter.

Monitor heaters were very popular here in Maine, similar to Toyotomi units you’ve asked about.
Used A double wall vent pipe through an outside wall that functioned as both supply and exhaust. Burned K-1(kerosene) very frugally. Many folks used them as a replacement for wood-stoves when the chore of burning wood got old.
Fuel was gravity fed, Directly from a storage tank if it could be positioned high enough. Otherwise an optional lift pump with a reservoir is needed.
Similar type heaters are available in propane and natural gas.

When comparing heating fuels, one therm of Natural Gas is 100,000 btu's. A gallon of LP gas is around 92,000 btu's, Number 2 heating oil or diesel is around 160,000 btu per gallon. IIRC a KW of electricity is 3413 btu's.

Also remember that burner efficiency is not overall heater efficiency.

I like the Rennai space heaters in Nat or LP gas. In the NW US we want vented models.

I've heard a lot of good things about Rinnai :) But in this case, I'm looking at non NG heaters for emerg. backup due to plans to outlaw NG here for primary heating in new construction. I currently have a NG condensing boiler & rads which I can run from my whole-house battery backup + diesel genny, as well as a pellet stove, but I'm thinking that, several years down the line, I may not want to schlep bags of pellets. Since I'll have the diesel genny anyway, a diesel heater might be a good option.
