I hate to sound cruel, but I have no sympathy for the fire victims. They elected the Green Weenies who drained reservoirs, saved snail darters, and won't allow brush (tinder & kindling) clearance, or else didn't move in the face of decades of Green Weenyness. They have massive cognitive dissonance, and the whole thing is a needless tragedy.

Yes, they built on desert and near desert, inadequate rainfall, etc. There was the Great Bel Air Fire in 1961.
The Santa Ana Winds. The original name was Satan's Winds. They come roaring down those canyons and gullies, it's like a bellows at a forge, or blowing on a campfire for all you Boy (and Girl) Scouts.

One of our local stations discussed the insurance crisis in Cali yesterday. It seems insurance companies wanted/needed to go up on rates to cover damages and the Cali State board declined those rate increases so several insurance companies closed policies. If it was as simple as State Farm left, it should of been very easy to use another insurance company, but it wasn't

Setting aside whether, or not, any of the above had any factual contribution to the situation why is anyone gloating over what SoCal people are going through???????

I feel for those whose property is lost and lives endangered. Insurance companies, like any business, exist to serve customers AND make a profit. Unfortunately Californis laws effectively prohibited them from raising rates to offset the losses in high risk areas. That left only the choice to stop renewing policies and not writing new policies. The other option would have been to raise rates on those in other states with lower risk to supplement those in California. Anyone want to volunteer for that?

These are taxpaying americans who lost everything, and you have no sympathy because of politics?

I bet you’re a hoot at cocktail parties.

My homeowners insurance is still with State Farm, I am one who's did not get cancelled here in CA but I did get a big increase in premium. I'm now waiting with baited breath that they don't come back and drop the rest of us too.

I heard an interview on the radio yesterday. The guest lives in the fire area, and her insurance was recently cancelled...she didn't say who the carrier was, just that she was dropped. She said Geico picked up the policy no questions asked. So hopefully you folks continue to have options.

LA councilwoman was on TV this AM talking about the failures in investment, especially for firefighting, in the LA county area. She said that at a meeting late last year, a study was presented showing that the fire response time was now twice the national average, and that the area needed 62 new fire stations. News presenter also pointed out that there were fire hydrants running dry. Apparently, the local water company sort of shrugged and said, "That's what happens when you have four times the normal demand." Strikes me that the county is suffering the results of poor investment choices over many decades.

As for the insurance thing, it's just Florida all over again, except with fire instead of floods.

Wow. I’m very surprised at some of these post. Are we allowed to feel bad for the 35% who did not elect “them”. Life takes people to certain places. Sometimes it’s not our first choice, but it’s what we’re stuck with. EVERYTIME there is a disaster of some sort people come out of the woodwork to say you should know better than to live there. Happens every hurricane season. My question is. Where do some of you geniuses suggest we live? Coast? Nope hurricanes. Mid west? Nope tornados. Northeast? Nope snowstorms. Well I guess I should go live on top of a mountain where I’m safe. Oh wait, southwest North Carolina is mountainous. And it flooded. Last year Kentucky flooded. Before that Vermont flooded. Vermont , the Green Mountains. In 2016 West Virginia had horrible floods. It’s the Mountain State for Pete sakes. I wish people would stop and think before they get on their political soapbox. Frankly it’s disgusting.

It's a recurring theme here. Just look at the comments when some investment bankers chasing lower costs and higher returns move a gun company from NY, CT and Mass to a so-called free state.

I have the same thoughts every time a gun manufacturer leaves states like NY, and the celebratory comments start to flow. I don't think the person that just lost their livelihood is celebrating.

Sheeshe...I'm surprised by some of the comments...but its California so I should have known better. I just thought it was an ironic stroke of luck for State Farm to cancel thousands of policies in this area only months before the fires.

Now they're going to have to deal with lawsuits saying they shouldn't have cancelled them. Either way some third party is getting paid. Insurance is a tough business.

The Insurance companies have to make a decision as to their risk reward, as mentioned, they are a business. Currently, they are in a state wide wee-wee match with the Insurance Commissioner as to their current rating structure.

My homeowners insurance is with State Farm and I guess they feel that my home is not in one of the wildfire areas, so they renewed my insurance.

I was not expecting cancellation but was expecting a huge increase, but they surprised me with what I would call a modest increase.

I live in what seems like a regular neighborhood but have been threatened by a fast moving wildfire coming out of the hills.

Is anybody really safe when there is fire is being driven by sustained winds of 60-80 mph for hours or days on end?

That article is very vague. Quoted someone who wants to move. Probably a reporter with an agenda. Insurance is expensive because of all the multi million dollar homes up and down both coast. That skews the avg premium. But I do not believe the avg premium is over $10k. My place in Naples is 88 steps from the water. Since 2016 my premiums went up less than $250. And part of that was because I increased my coverage do to build material cost going up.
