"AN OPENED LETTER" OF APOLOGY FOR MY SPELLING, GRAMMAR & TYPING
About a year or so ago after having a few Forum member's correct a few misspelled words in my posts, I decided to post a response - in the Lounge section I believe. I did that but was unable to find it again, so I will just re-write another.
Yesterday a member sent me a private message (so as not to embarrass me and I do appreciate that immensely - thank you Sir)! He noted that I had misused a word or spelled it the wrong way and yes, he was absolutely correct. So here is my explanation and apology......
I SUCK at spelling! I am a math WIZ! In High School I received 100% on all 4 of my math Regents, but only a 78% on my English Regents and that might have been a gift from the God's- lol. I have struggled with spelling my entire life and have actually improved quite a bit - my wife is always after me about this and I do really try hard by looking a word up when I can't figure it out. She spells - I do the math!
Some of the more detail oriented people here might also have noticed that I edit my posts frequently. Not really to change content, but to correct spelling and grammar if I notice it after hitting the "submit" button. I am also a night owl and many of my posts are between 2:00am and 6:00am. Sometimes I post while a bit tired and sometimes when not 100% awake - what can I say?
To add insult to injury I am also a terrible typist! There are times I am aware how to spell something but just hit the wrong keys. Been working on that for 50+ years but have not mastered that yet - lol.
No one can be perfect at everything - although I do try. My true talents are in mathematics, science, common sense and mechanical skills. I do quite well when we "play" Jeopardy every night (except when it comes to spelling categories) and my wife has prodded me to go on the show for decades - not really interested though. I truly do not know why I have trouble spelling some words - guess I was doing quantum mechanics or calculus during English class - lol!!
So YES I am aware of my short comings when it pertains to spelling and I SHALL continue to try and improve this. I apologize to anyone here who us offended by misspelled words, and will also make a concerted effort to read my posts one more time before hitting "submit" - but no promises....
Last but not least, I am glad to see there are members here who pick up on incorrect spelling as it does say something about the caliber of members here. Hopefully there are many who excel at mathematics too! While I do agree spelling is important, it is second fiddle to mathematics and science with which the world as we know it could not survive. So that is my story Guys and Gals..... For better or worse I am a lousy speller and even worse typist!

I'm terrible at both.
Spell check is one of my best friends. I just wish there was a "math check".

Math and English spelling don't mix. Doesn't mean they can't coexist, but they don't mix. Common sense gets along a little better with English, but not much. If you're not a history buff, fageddaboutit.
"Proper" English is its own subject. Fits some folks' interests, others' perhaps not.
De gustibus non disputandum erat.

I also suck at spelling but now that I have Siri I have improved a lot. I ask Siri several times a day how to spell something. As I keep getting older sometimes the easiest word escapes me. Forgot my easy password to my desk top one day.
After a major production I was able to get on the computer and change it. The next day I remembered the original password.

I never correct someone else's grammar or spelling unless I'm reposting/quoting them, but I do notice it.
The older I get, I also find myself missing things. The English language has numerous words that sound the same, are spelled differently, and have different meanings. Spelling/grammar check won't always pick up on that.
My biggest pet peeve is this one, "I seen ..."
I hear what I assumed to be educated people saying that all the time.
I see
I saw
I have seen
That and fractions...good grief!

Chief, I certainly wouldn't worry about that if I were you. Heck, I'll bet most of the people who are members of the spelling/grammar police can't tell the difference between a split infinitive and a dangling participle.

Chief, I’ve never noticed any of what you’ve mentioned. Keep on keeping on, My Friend. I am always willing to over look a little boo-boo. I make plenty.
But while we’re on the subject, on thing that does rub me the wrong way is when guys use more than one question mark. I’ve received warnings from the admin here for things I consider to be less offensive.
The other disgusting thing is when someone refers to their finger as a booger hook. That just disgusting, low intelligent, low class.
Ok, I’m done. Everyone have a wonderful day, and keep em in the black!

Well I'm terrible at math, so there you go! I'm sure we've all got more to worry about (and more serious faults) than spelling and grammar! No apology needed!

I notice misspellings and misuse of words, but rarely point them out. Sometime I do if I find them funny, like "sweat tea" the other day. I think, on the whole, pointing out spelling or grammatical errors on the forum is kinda rude, but to do so by PM to someone who is receptive, like Chief38, seems okay to me.
There is certainly no need to apologize to anyone about it, Chief. It's clear from your posts that you are a smart guy, and I really don't believe any of us are offended by your language errors. I like reading your posts.
(Ya know, I am the other way: I'm pretty good at language and writing, but I truly suck at math. Always have. In my twenties, when I applied to grad school and took the GRE standardized test, I was in the high 90s for language and in the mid 20s for math...)
(This discussion reminds me that I miss Absent Comrade TexasStar. He was a stickler for proper spelling and grammar, and would regularly, quite prissily, take members to task for their errors. This would really annoy some of us, and watching the ensuing brouhaha from the sidelines was great fun!)

I am not a biologist, but at least from a legal perspective, I think that the sitting chief executive has clarified that.
Sounds too close to political for me.

Just keep posting what you have been posting. I notice misuse of words and misspellings of words. Usually I say nothing about them. I may correct them when I quote their postings. I just correct the problem and do not usually take them to task about it. We all do it from time to time. Usually it is own own faults due to not roof reading.

I'm rather ambivalent about this. We are here for fun and if I can read and understand the post with no problem I'm good to go.
I know I burble a word or two here, it just happens no big deal
PS Chief I enjoy your posts, keep up the good work!

...I can spelll, but I cant tipe sometimes. Maybe it's because the laptop is sitting on my prodigious belly as I attempt to communicate the thoughts I've thunk that have never been thunk before by any sentient creature.
Proofreading is tough for me because I know what I meant but can't see what I've said.

Chief, there's too much going on than to worry about mispelling and grammar. See? There's one in that sentence according to the red line under it! If I were to try to bring to light everyone's poor spelling I'd get kicked off the Forum!! There, their, & they're, use them as you like! We know what is meant. Just like to, too, & two. I would think the English language would be tough to learn because of all the synonyms & different pronunciations of the same letters, etc. Or is it ect., which we see a lot!
Remember "I before E, except after C, or when sounded like A as in neighbor or weigh." All I care about personally is trying to respect each other's knowledge about guns, or lack thereof, without being chastised for asking a question. I have many questions. If guns contained refrigerants or compressors, I'd probably be good to go!
Piece! Er, I mean Peace!

Some posts you just have to read phonetically...... Also my computer's "P" key sticks sometimes and I do not notice it all the time. So words that contain the letter "p" sometimes do not after I type them. Just makes it all more fun.

Chief, never saw you write something so terribly I couldn't get what you were trying to get across. Almost always, it's well worth getting across. Just because something is misspelled, don't make it unimportant. Keep doing what you're doing. I for one would miss it.

I graduated High School in 1974 (AD), It wasn't until the Class of 76 that typing or keyboard was a required subject. I also have a type of dyslexia that messes with my spelling. At least 2 of my grandkids inherited the Dyslexia from me, and so far, as we can tell 5 of the 9 inherited Left Handedness from my wife. When in my senior year of HS, I misspelled enough on my Spanish final, that I would still be there if I hadn't talked them into allow the misspelling to be ignored (I knew the material!) The Principle knew my family had our own business, so he ask me, "How will you survive in the business world without being able to spell?" I responded without thinking "I'll just do like my dad dose and hire unemployed schoolteachers to be out secretaries." (over the years we had about 30 secretaries, and every one of them was an unemployed schoolteacher!) At any rate they turned me loose to inflict my "Proprietary" spelling on the world.
Spell Check, really protects your sanity from my spelling!
My mom was the personal secretary for a self-made millionaire in the early 50's. His grammar and spelling were worse than mine. She corrected it in correspondence, but he threw it away, insisting his letters must sound like him! He's the boss and he makes the rules, not your 10th grade English teacher.
Standardized spelling only came about after dictionaries were invented. I believe that is a fad that will pass in the not-too-distant future!
Ivan
(Spell and Grammer Check have heavily influenced this post!)

Chief - you have too many other redeeming virtues to worry about something as innocuous as a few spelling errors.
To my mind, you are a very valuable resource here on the forum!

Depends on what participle he's dangling and where he's dangling it!

I am better at math (mostly trig and geometry) than languages, but I try to get that right as well. No one is so perfect as to go through life without a mistake here and there. I notice the wrong words and odd spellings of others (and hopefully my own), but if I can understand the thought, I overlook the mistakes as being something too trivial to be concerned with. If that is the worst you do in life, you're doing way better than most of us. I have only Best Wishes to everyone else out there regardless of any language mistakes in Forum posts.

I could very well have written the original post.
My spelling and grammar suck and my brain thinks way faster than I type, so things can get dropped or a bit twisted

I know I can't spell. Every time I sit at my computer I have to ask my wife how to spell something. She got all A's in school, I got mostly D's.

Is there some way to type a draft of a post and keep it for later review? Unless I'm missing something, which as a Luddite is totally possible, I don't know of any way to preserve a potential post and come back to it without losing it. I say this because as the Secretary for the town planning commission I hammer out the first draft of the meeting minutes and let it sit and cool for a while. I wouldn't dream of submitting that first draft of the meeting minutes without letting it sit for a while and then going back to check for errors in spelling and/or grammar or look for better ways to say things. It usually takes a third draft before I believe I have a set of meeting minutes I feel confident enough to submit. And I still sometimes have a mistake slip through.

Can't spell either; never could...... spell check sometimes just confuses me with "its" suggestions!
I use "Golddollar's" method.......... got me five 4.0 semesters, a couple 3.8s in College and through Law School and 40 years in business.
I can walk and chew gum; but can't think, type and spell, at the same time!

There may well be better ways, but one which is easy enough is just to type your reply, highlight it with your cursor, right-click on it and copy it, then open a new Word document, and right-click and paste what you copied into the Word document, and save it with an appropriate title (like Reply to Lounge - Why is it Spelled Knifes?). Or you could paste it into a new e-mail and save it in Drafts.
If an error occasionally slips through, you might consider four drafts rather than three - it is far more important to spell every word correctly than to actually make a post, or pass up an opportunity to split an infinitive even with an adjective, not to mention a dangling participle.
Best wishes.

If you all can tolerate my iffy spelling, and/or grammer, I be cool with everybody else's.

Out of curiosity, what did you do for a living before you retired?

I have done that on occasion. It always seems to take three drafts for sure.

Sometimes, not often, I will write a post as a draft in a word document or an email draft, and then cut and paste it as a post when I am ready. More often I will come back to a post and find typos or other errors and just edit it.

Chief, I don’t think you need to worry about it. Your butchering of the English language is not a problem. The guy who sent you a PM about it, might be. Fat fingers and cell phones play hell with my postings. Mix in auto correct and being in a hurry. It’s a recipe for grammatical disaster. I make and see mistakes all the time. I understand what the member means. It’s a gun forum. It’s not a college thesis.

When your spelling gets corrected you're dealing with the Hobby Cops of the Language Police

The all-time champ is "loose/lose".
Given the context that the author uses them in everyone here knows what they meant.

I'm not even going to try to read that ^^^. It might be the funniest thing I'll read all year, but I'm going to have to miss it.
