I've been observing something for several months now on this forum that I find odd regarding thread ratings. I don't "rate" threads very often, and I don't know that I have ever down rated a thread. If I read one that I find particularly enjoyable or interesting I'll pop up to the top and give it a 5 star rating.

Several months ago I gave a very interesting and lively thread a 5 star rating, the first rating for that thread. Not long afterwards it was down to 3 stars and that caught my eye. I got to watching various threads and for a 5 star rating to be averaged at 3 stars means someone is giving a 1 star rating. With further observation I noticed that someone is going through most of the 5 star threads and down rating them with a 1 star. Eventually, after several other people had given a thread a 5 star rating the average rate would bump back up to 4 but they never go back to 5 stars once they've received a 1 star rating.

Now some who've read this far may be thinking, Puller, you need to get a life. Yeah, well, probably so. Thread ratings is not that big a deal, but I wanted the 1 star bandit to know I was onto his game and watching him. :)

Interesting topic.

Geezz… I’ve been active on internet forums since 1999.

I’ve never known about a “rating” system for threads.

In my mind I virtually “rate” a thread based on the topic and my level of interest. I don’t care what anyone else thinks about a thread.

A large percentage of threads have nothing to do with the subject of the forum, but some are still very interesting, entertaining, or very informative.

I have found over the years some of the most flaming, raucous, threads filled with Bravo Sierra and anecdotal meaningless arguments turn out to be the most interesting and educational.

Years ago, on an automotive forum, the female moderator consistently posted incorrect information or comments that clearly showed her ignorance. One day I posted a very detailed factual post to correct her. She banned me from the forum.

You can’t fix STUPID.

Behind a keyboard anyone can self-identify as anything or anybody.

I find the forums too often to be a significant waste of time that I could spend on other things that would add more to my life.

They are an easy escape from my chores. :D

That’s just my worthless opinion.

In an effort to stay awake while watching the Marlins game I tasked myself.
I rarely if ever pay attention to ratings but in this case I threw a 3 star out there, clicked vote and saw this:

Serves me right for trying.
I happened to notice hovering over thread ratings on the thread list I can see the number of votes cast. One thread with near 2,000 views received 6 votes so I'd guess the vast majority are like myself and rarely go thru the motions unless bored senseless.

I was unware of the star ratings, but it seems confusing. I don't do the likes; instead I find it much more meaningful to post a brief but positive comment about a worthwhile response to a thread.

Same for a worthless response or one that's blatantly false. It's deserving of a negative but truthful comment; one based on more than personal opinion. I guess some would prefer a way to "dislike" a thread.

Good and valid responses to a thread will maintain this forum as one of merit and excellence.

I ignore thread ratings. If a thread interests me, I'll read it and may add my own posts, regardless of its rating. I don't know why the Forum even has a ratings system.

Interesting topic. There is a member here that I have nick named "Brigadier"...as in Brigadier (1 star) general. He/she doesn't seem to like very much that goes on around here. I sometimes put up a 5 star to help out a good thread.

I have done the same as you. We have a "troll" on this forum that as you mentioned, doesn't like most of the topics that are germane to this site.

The "like" is a backdoor way of letting the author know you may have responded to his post that you "liked". I don't subscribe to threads, too many notifications. Sometimes I don't come back. But if you "like" a post of mine I'll circle around and maybe continue the conversation with you.

never even noticed you could do that, and have been here quite awhile
