I agree with this thread needs pictures. My 1949 Ford 8N - it’s literally bulletproof. Fresh gas and a battery charge and it is ready to go.

I had an old VAC Case. I used it to plow snow and bush hog my field. I converted it to 12 volts. It didn’t matter how cold it was. Pull the choke, hit the starter, and we were off. I always thought that tractor was ahead of its time.

Part of my old stomping grounds.

This is my 1951 8N Ford I have had since 1964. The tractor and I are both in retirement now. We mow rass and plow snow and garden.


With it's bigger brother, a 641 Ford.




Sometimes you pick up debris in the air pre cleaner.

In some tractor ads/mags I see the 8N and similar tractors referred to as "estate tractors". That'd be a serious shock to a lot of actual farmers who had them as their only tractor. Maybe not to farmers who farm square miles instead of acres.

This just reminded me that somewhere, I've got movie footage of a steam tractor running a belt driven thresher. The guy had a spare steam tractor too. THOSE were impressive.

Awhile back, the History Channel had an episode about the development of the tractor. It is difficult to overestimate the contribution of tractors and motorized farming equipment on modern life. I once had an employee who had a degree in agricultural engineering. Basically a mechanical engineer specializing in farming equipment, although there is probably more to it than that.

My personal experience in driving a tractor is limited to just a few times despite my being born and raised in the southern Ohio corn belt (also tobacco growing).

I had this 1952 Ford 8N for 30 plus years, but the old DuAL trip bucket loader that was on it finally wore out.


I replaced the 8N with this 1971 International Industrial 3444 last March. The 3444 has close to the same footprint as the 8N so I can still maneuver in fairly tight quarters. Plus, I now have power steering and a hydraulic bucket!


After a tune up, adjusting the valve lash, rebuilding the carburetor, new belts and hoses, and changing all the fluids I deemed the 3444 fit enough for fresh coat of International Yellow.

At the Porsche Rennfest 7 a few years ago they "raced" some of their vintage tractors around Laguna Seca. Not real exciting but still got lots of grins. Yes, they were built by Porsche.

BTW, the gentleman in the white shorts is none other than Hans-Peter Porsche, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche. He has regularly attended the Porsche Parade for many years. He may be one of the owners of Porsche (and Volkswagen and Audi), but he is very approachable and loves to visit with Porsche enthusiasts.

I know nothing of tractors but the 4 years I lived in Randolph county NC I want to every tractor pull I could. Mainly to meet farm girls but I got a charge when they would pit steam iron wheeled tractors against dray horses.

I'm pretty sure out near my old residence in Fombell, PA, they had steam tractor shows...maybe the land just outside Zelienople, Harmony, is where the yearly tractor show was. Not sure. I'm pretty sure they had steam shows every year.

The Rumely Oil Pull that I pictured was featured at many of the shows your area. My friend lives in Meadville. Finally the cost of moving it from Meadville to the other shows in Western Pa. got to be to much. It can only be moved with a Semi on a low-boy trailer. He still shows it, but at the local Gas & Steam Engine Society shows. The keep it there year round.

Midwest Old Threshers Reunion, Mt Pleasant Iowa, every Labor Day weekend. One of the best shows around. Working steam tractors, threshing machines, balers, corn shellers. Steam, gas, and horse powered machines. Steam locomotive circling grounds. Hundreds of antique and classic tractors.

I learned how to drive on a Ford tractor that looked identical to that when I was 10. Helped me when I bought my first car, which was a stick shift. Jumped in and drove off. Today, a stick shift is almost an anti-theft device.

For almost 20 years, there has been a Mackinaw Bridge, Mackinaw City MI, antique tractor crossing. Last year 1500 tractors were in the convoy. Never saw a bigger gathering of old tractors anywhere! Video is from a 2012 crossing and I think it had just under 1,000 that year. Tractor lovers dream!
