Sorry, not a Smith...a Ruger.
It's a great shooter. Took the range dog out back and ran 50 rounds through the gun to get the sights adjusted.
It's worth a look! What a well balanced Special!
AND...It's not going to sit in the safe!!
I might even try to find long-snout-ed version!

Been shooting .44 Specials for years. Elmer Keith' s writing got me into that caliber. A fine sccurate cartidge when handloaded. Once had a Charter Arms Bulldog that would surprise you at over 100 yards.

I think I must have had the next C/A Bulldog in that serial number run Dick? That cartridge never ceases to amaze me out of lots of different guns!

Have my order in for one in 4 5/8". Hope my local dealer has some pull with Lipseys and can get one.

Thanks for the kind words...I can't believe it's so easy/fun to shoot...just the right gun for the caliber!
Roe,
Great pics. Those grips really dress up the gun. I'm going to get something for mine...I'm gonna thunk on it for a spell.

Very nice VFM.
Is that a New Model Blackhawk? Flat-top Vaquero?

It is a New Model Blackhawk on the same frame as the 50th aniversary .357. It is a Lipsey's exclusive, so if you want one make sure your dealer knows it is only available through them.
Original production numbers were to be limited to 1000 each of the 4 5/8" and 5 1/2" barrel lengths for the year, but recent word is an additional 1000 of each have been ordered due to high demand.
Ruger was to catalog this gun back in '55 or '56, but the release of the 44 Mag and the production demands it caused forced Ruger to table a 44 Special. 54 years later it is finally a reality. Elmer and Skeeter would be pleased.
Bob, if stag is not your thing, check out what Cary has to offer...

I thought it looked familiar. I have one in .44Mag. Mine has a 7.5"bbl, and is very accurate. It handles the "big boomers" with ease.
Enjoy!

That is one fine-looking sixgun, especially with the stags! I just read the Brian Pearce article on these new guns and it really got my mouth watering. I don't know if I should go ahead and get the .44 Special or wait and hope for a 5 1/2" .41 Magnum. Ruger may never get around to chambering these smaller framed guns in the .41.

I'd get while the gettin's good! Ruger's track record on this type of thing is not good. Hell, it took them 54 years to release this one, and I doubt they would have even brought out the .44 Special had not Lipsey's seen the demand and ordered 2000+.
Would the demand exist for a small frame .41 to a similar extent? I don't know. Just know I couldn't pass up this one when I found out about them.
But if they do eventually produce a .41, who says you can't have one (or more) of each!

I wish I could find one. My dealer keeps getting the runaround from Lipseys. Denied even having any since January and now says the first run is sold out.

I've had a Ruger Blackhawk Lipseys .44 Special on order with my local gun store for a few months now. He has been assured he will get one for me, but that it might not be until the fourth quarter of the year run.
I may have to get a set of Cary's grips for it (if I ever really get it). In my opinion, Cary's custom wood handles are the finest made...anywhere, by anyone.
Cary finishes the end of the screw and matches it to a polished escuteon. He also supplies an aluminum spacer to support the two escuteons between the grips so you can never over tighten the screw and crack the wood. Who else does that?
Here's a set of his birdseye maple handles on my Single Six:

Steve
Nice to see you back where you belong.
Bob...I'm jealous, I have had one on order for months and still waiting although totally out of character for me, I want a 5 1/2" gun (I usually prefer 4 5/8)
I will cream myself if they come out with this in a flat-top Bisley

have the .45 Colt in the Vaquero frame and find it more than adequate for anything that cones along. Very accurate an very powerful in .45 colt. Great round.

Just received a 4 5/8 44 special 2 weeks ago. It is the best fitted Ruger SA owned, in addition to being very accurate. Price of admission was $470, and well worth it.

VonFatman, you will like the gun. Has enough heft to soften some of those hot loads and it will take them. Received mine a few weeks ago after several months waiting. Have you had any problems with yours? My ejector rod would not travel all the way and would bind. Also watch the roll pin holding the rear sight. It has a tendency to walk out after warm loads. Mine is going back tomorrow to get those 2 issues resolved. I like it and it's Ruger tough and small enough not to be in the way. Now for some good leather and different grips.

The .44 special is hands down my favorite caliber and so is the handguns built for them. And yes, I was inspired by elmers writeings. I also had a ruger blackhawk converted to one about 35 years ago. Here are 6 that I now own in 44 special. A triplelock with adjustable sights added by the factory in 1949, a HD converted with a model 21 barrel, a 1950 target, my favorite, a 4" 24-3, a colt SAA converted that originaly was sent to the copper queen mine in bisbee ariz in 1906, and a third gen colt SAA.
Now people love to tell me, oh, a 44 mag will do everything and more than a special will. True, but unless its a mag mountain gun, not so for packing and handeling. Some like 45 colt, they are good too and I also have some. However with a 45 colt be it smith or colt, most have oversize chambers and throats to work with. And on top of that, the case is so huge, it really is out of poportion to todays powders and easy to double charge. And also truth is, you can also load the 45 acp to do about the same as 45 colt. Now I own them all in special, mag and 45 colt. And I am here to tell ya, the special will do 95 percent of what you use a mag for, is much lighter and better handeling. P.S. My triplelock is my most accuarate. However I no longer shoot it as I dont want to hurt it, its now a safe queen, and I have the others I hop up. I really dont shoot the 1950 target anymore either. The 24-3 and short barreled colt are my sweethearts.
