Something I've wondered about. How did Edward M Kennedy come to be called, Ted or Teddy..?

Don't misunderstand, I couldn't stand seeing or hearing the guy. Just curious how Teddy came about..

Ted is an often used contraction for Edward --> Ed --> Ted.

When I was growing up, there was a kid in the neighborhood named Edward who went by Wardy.

I have one of those family nicknames (no, I won't tell you). I can identify everyone who calls me that by the sound of their voice. Sadly, that number dwindles every year.
