Two current schools names whose meaning is sometimes not understood:

Southern Illinois "Salukis" - a sight hound known as a Persian Greyhound

Virginia Tech "Hokies" - a hokie is a wild turkey but the school claims that it was made up from a spirited chant

Google it if you want; my high school in Detroit was Henry Ford High School, and the football team was the Trojans. In addition to the 'Fighting' Trojans, imaginative teenagers came up with some pretty clever adjectives. most of which wouldn't get past the moderators.

Mike, I'm guessing you didn't happen to see the TV basketball game some years ago, between Duke, known for their inventive antics at home, and the, yep....USC "Trojans".

The court was rained upon with those little containers so long, they delayed the game well over half an hour to clean it up.
