    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

I am ever hopeful that this my last update. Soon after my scope, a vintage Burris 2-7x32, was mounted on my 617 the accuracy went south yet again. Emailed Burris and sent it back. 4 days later Burris finds that it is unrepairable and then are sending me a replacement under their "forever"...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

My Exemplar is the most accurate pistol I have ever shot. I have a Contender G2 .22lr that is close but not quite there. I haven't shot either one beyond 80 yards, so 3-9x is fine for now. I look forward to trying longer distances. Carry on.

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

The bore was left alone, got a second opinion on that and apparently it is within spec. The old Burris scope was cleaned up by my gunsmith and then sighted in. He did have to use a shim on one of the rings to make it perfectly zero at 50 yards. I left the trigger pull at 3lbs (SA) because it is...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

Well here we are a year later, I have been a bit distracted by the Covid disaster. I have finally found a set up that works on my 617. I wanted a new 3-9x40mm rifle scope on my Exemplar, so we took off the period Burris pistol scope that was on it and put that on my 617. I had my smith mount and...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

My next move is to try some match grade ammo. I have tried Wolf Match Target but results were just average. I will try RWS or S&K next. In the end I will probably have my smith go in for a full trigger and action job and reduce the trigger pull to at least 2#. I recently acquired a Anschutz...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

I feel I have beaten this deceased equine enough. Here's what's up. Got my 617 back from my gunsmith and gave it yet another thorough scrubbing, and then to the range. No particular cylinder showed any accuracy problems. I shot ten 12-shot groups and the groups were tighter, a bit over 1'' on...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

My smith agrees with you. He does not want to go any further until I have contacted S&W. I still need to hit the range next week to see if the action work helped. My vision is checked yearly and I do wear corrective lenses. In my defense, shooting my Ruger Single Ten with the exact same set up...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

So...... Got a call from my gunsmith this morning, ''I need you to come and see me about your 617.'' Great. Everything checked out good inside and while he was in there he did a light smoothing and lowered my trigger pull to a very nice 3#. When he went to bore sight it however he could not...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

Been a minute since my last update. I have been busy with Contender projects. I have tried a number of .22lr brands including Wolf, Eley, Lapua, etc. None group any better than my go to CCI standard velocity. I was at the range last week and shot, from a rest, 5 ten shot groups @ 20 yards that...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

Exciting update. Got out the Hoppe's and a bore brush and had at it. I made 30 passes with the brush. After each ten passes, I ran a bore mop soaked with more Hoppe's through and then dry patches until they were clean. Hit the range two days ago. Same rest, distance, red dot, and targets. Out of...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

My gunsmith, who has been at it for 30 years, mounted the rail and it is rock solid. I mount and dismount optics when the mood strikes. I have a handful of vintage Smith revolvers that all shoot well and I have kept them. This one seems perfect mechanically and looks pristine. A real puzzler. No...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

I very much appreciate all the advice. Iron sights are out for me, my eyesight requires at least a red dot. In my defense, at 25 yards I can usually shoot 10 shot groups at around 1/2'' with my TC Contender. Same Trs-25 dot and CCI SV .22lr ammo. I use sand bags as a rest. A lot of you have...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

Hey many thanks for the rapid responses. I had a range master shoot it today while I was there. His groups were worse than mine. The crown looks good to me. The barrel is dead on straight. I checked that stuff during my pre purchase inspection. I had not thought of lapping the barrel, but I have...

    617-0 ACCURACY PROBLEMS

I recently bought a 617-0 with the 8-3/8'' barrel. The lock up is perfect as is the trigger which has a smooth 4-1/2 pound pull in SA. Over the last few months I have tried at least 10 different types of .22lr. I am shooting from a rest at 20 yards with a trs-25 red dot. The best 12 shot group I...

    Ordered new 6" 617

I also own this exact model. It is a great shooter. I am still looking for a 8 3/8'' 617 in the 10 shot configuration, that won't require me to borrow against my house. Good stuff.
