Also when you release the slide extend your grip arm and keep your slide arm close to your body as you let go almost pulling the slide out of your hand it helps to make sure you actually release the slide and don't ride it. It's what worked for me with my shield.
Yep .750 is the size you need. IMO if you are covering the block with a free float guard then I would just shave it since it won't really be visible anyways. If your block will be visible then I would replace it.
