I have a 649 that I purchased in 1991. Shot the heck out of it. Broke the hammer stud. S&W braised it back on and I've continued to shoot the heck out of it. Your're better off buying a used J frame from the 80's to mid 90's. One made before the lock came into being.
The NYC Dept of Correction used the same holster. Officers assigned to the Transportation Division used the swivel version. The draw as I remember it: grasp the bottom of the holster with your support hand while you gripped the gun and wedged your shooting hand thumb into the leather, then...
I sent my 649 (1 7/8" barrel .38spl) to Karl Sokol in VT. He opened up the rear notch and sand blasted the top strap to reduce glare. He also cut the front sight blade to put in a red insert. I had sent my gun to a company that intalls the XS big dot sights a few years back but that didn't...
Used one for a week. Liked the idea of side mount but couldn't use my Secret Service grips or Hideout grips. The mounting plate changes the dimensions of the side plate so you the right grip panel won't fit flush against the gun. Rubber grips work better. Put a hundred rounds through the gun...
Friend of mine got into a shoot out in Queens, NY a couple of years back. Robbers pushed in as he was opening check cashing place. Forced to open safe. Think he said there were three of them. None wore masks. They were armed with "large automatics". First opportunity, he drew his S&W 36...
Presently, NYPD and NYDC use God Dot 135 grain +P Hollow Point. This round was made especially for snub nose revolvers like your S&W 49. If you can find any Nyclad 158 grain semi-wadcutter in standard or +P use those for carry. We used them for years. Practice with standard velocity rounds...
Yes. J frames rule! I tried switching to the Kahr MK40 when I retired but it never carried like my 649 Bodyguard with the 1 7/8 inch barrel. Something about that gun just lends itself well to pocket carry and any other mode of concealed carry. Recently, I traded in that MK40 for a PM45...
I agree. The shrouded bodyguard is the way to go. That hump lends itself well for pocket carry. Very slick design. Looks cool, chicks dig it. Ugly/beauty is relative. The stainless steel model 649 with the 1 7/8 inch barrel in .38 special is the way to go. Sturdy enough for lots of...
