My 15-22 when new had the same issues with ammo other than CCI Mini Mags.
I replaced the extractor with the VQ and it now shoots and ejects just about anything. I do get an FTE every once in a while with bulk ammo, but it made a huge difference.
I also think these rifles need a little break...
I like CLP and Ballistol for general cleaning and lubrication.
They are both cleaners and lubricate at the same time.
I use EWL, which is a synthetic oil, on the barrel after I have cleaned it. I use patches first with some barrel solvent and then put a few drops of EWL on a snake to...
I think running higher velocity ammo during the break-in period is a good practice. As I said before, mine really loosened up after a couple of outings and the gun eventually became less picky with the ammo. I think the VQ extractor made the biggest difference for me, but there is no doubt...
I'd give the rifle some more time to "break -in" before I came to any conclusions. Mine was fussy the first couple hundred rounds I put through it when it was new. I also put the VQ extractor in which made a big difference when using cheaper bulk ammo. Since it's a blow back design, you will...
How often do you guys recommend taking the firing pin out and cleaning it?
I always remove the extractor and clean it after each outing, as it is easy, but the firing pin? (That doesn't look so easy and also looks like you might ruin the roll pin after so many cleanings)
Just curious.
I can also vouch for the VQ extractor. My new 15-22 had constant FTF and FTE issues with various ammo until I upgraded to the VQ extractor. I was going to send the rifle back to S&W but thought I would try the new extractor first. I'm glad I did.
Like your rifle, mine also performed well...
Sorry to hear about your issues and the incredibly long wait to get your new guns fixed.
I'm pretty new to purchasing S&W products and have also had bad luck with my first two new purchases.
I purchased a .22 Compact and a 15-22 this spring and they both had problems out of the box. I...
Another vote for the Volquartsen extractor. I bought a brand new 15-22 Sport and had constant FTE's with bulk ammo when I first shot it. I was going to send it back to S&W but decided to order the VQ extractor first. After installing it I went to the range. It was like a completely different...
My experience with the .22 Compact has been good since I got past an initial glitch. It was consistently firing high and I sent it back to S&W. They replaced the barrel and it has been fine since. My barrel nut was also very loose - so I put a little locktite on the threads as some suggested...
That's strange - I have a really new 15-22 and don't have that issue. I did have FTE issues, which was solved by putting in a Volquartsen Extractor.
I wonder if this is something S&W just recently tried to re-engineer, or if they have a bad batch or out of spec firing pins.
By now you...
Thanks for checking out the extractor spring from E-bay - I just put an order in for one myself so I have an extra on hand for my 15-22. I would imagine, (with this good info) the E-bay vendor won't have them around much longer either. :D
The extractor is a bit tricky to get out and back in...
Sorry to hear about the long wait. You might try calling and asking for a supervisor as this helped me get my gun expedited. I was getting the same run-around with no notifications from S&W regarding my gun at all. It took me a week to find out if the gun was actually there - even though...
Numrich has carried the spring in the past. They are out of it now and told me they wouldn't be getting more back in until August.
I don't know why this spring is such a rare commodity. It's just a spring!
Hi: Yes, I just contacted S&W today and they are going to send me out their barrel nut wrench.
I was able to tighten the nut back on the last few turns using a vice grip and some cloth around the nut, (which was hard to tighten), so I don't know if they sent me my gun back from replacing the...
