M&P 22 Compact

Just bought a new M&P 22 Compact today!!!!
I traded my Ruger SR22P for it and some cash at my local GS. I really liked the Ruger, but the the slide release level broke while I was shooting, seems to be a common problem. Something about seeing the slide hanging by your face while shooting is a little disconcerting.
Bottom line, called Ruger to make arrangements to send it in for repair and like I always do, took it to my local Gun dealer for shipping and guess what was in the case? Yep, you guesses it, the M&P 22.
A little bit of negotiation and I have a brand new 22 pistol!
For those of you that have one, anything special I should know about it prior to shooting it other than clean and oil? Any ammo they don't like?
From what I have read it it is a fine pistol and I want to keep it that way.

If yours has a threaded barrel with a protector nut that is flush with the front of the slide, keep an eye on the nut as you shoot. Mine tends to come loose with just a mag or two of shooting. My model did not come with a wrench to tighten the nut, and apparently the advice is NOT to use any form of Loctite on the threads. So you just have to pay attention.

I have almost 10k rounds through mine, primarily CCI SV and Remington Golden Bullet. Mine hates Federal Auto Match of the post 2014 production, and any American Eagle. FAM from before that was great. I had a lot, used it, then bought recent production, and have nothing but problems with that.

I have a specific wrench (EWKArms) for the barrel nut. Mine would have never come loose, it was a big battle to get it off the first time so that I could use an adapter and suppressor.

I am pleased to substantiate your choice. After hours of research I decided on either the SR22 or the 22 Compact. I rented both to try and bought the 22 Compact as I departed from the range at my LGS.

I bought a 22 because my 75 year old hands were arthritic enough to compel a nearly no recoil gun for accuracy. I started a thread about that choice on this forum. It got to be very long and very affirmative thread in that choice. Today I reached 2,000 rounds through the gun at the range without a single hiccup. No failure to feed, fire, or eject. I only shoot CCI ammo as I consider it the best. I live by the belief of training with the ammo you will shoot, and I will never put bulk ammo in my 22.

Mine does have the flush threaded barrel nut, so I will check it to make sure it stays tight.

Seems like that nut will either be super tight or super loose

Mine was tight, almost didnt get it to come loose. I just snug it finger tight after every mag now because the new adapter has to be removed to field strip.

Gun is a blast. Thousands of rounds through mine also. Shoots anything but subsonic (not enough pressure) Hyper accurate, even with rapid fire.

Seems like practice with our carry guns etc is just that, serious practice but at the end of the day the compact comes out for fun. one of our favorite games is gun on table in front (all range safety observed) pull gun up, load mag, chamber round, point-and-shoot, no aiming allowed. At seven yards the family will work within a 2-3 inch POA till the "eye" is hit. Lotsa fun

yep another compact .22 fan. Not as many rounds as others may have as its not my only toy but I've ran about 1200 rounds with 0 issues of any sort (including ammo). I've used it to clear out my Federal stock (my buckmark doesn't care for that ammo) and it enjoys a diet of mini mags as well.

I didn't pick it up for its accuracy (not bad of course) just grabbed one for another range toy and for that purpose it excels.

Add in the fact that it mirrors somewhat closely the Shield in size so it can be used for carry practice as well.

I have two. One has around 40,000 rounds through it. It's been back to S & W once for a new firing pin. I've fired about every brand of 22 except Thunderduds without any problems. I had to buy a second one for my wife since she wanted to make mine hers. The picture is from when it was new.

One last question. I haven't done any checking yet, but does the compact take different mags than the full size and where is the best place to get them.

A clarification, please. My understanding is that the compact is made in the USA, and the full size is made somewhere else. I have also heard that the compact is a better pistol. Any comments?

You are correct. Compact is USA made.
FS is (was?) a product of Walther in Germany.
Balance of opinion here is that the Compact is the superior product.
Each uses a different magazine.

More love here for the 22 Compact! Great plinker! Great training pistol!
I shoot mostly CCI Mini-Mags and at times, Stingers. I usually avoid LRN ammo for cleaning purposes only.

My experience with the .22 Compact has been good since I got past an initial glitch. It was consistently firing high and I sent it back to S&W. They replaced the barrel and it has been fine since. My barrel nut was also very loose - so I put a little locktite on the threads as some suggested. (Note the locktite that you can still remove the nut) I called S&W and asked them to send me a wrench since it didn't seem to fit anything standard and was very narrow.

Mine is not finicky of any ammo I feed it including bulk. I find the CCI Mini Mags the most consistent for accuracy. The gun is very easy to clean and I have about 2000 rounds through it so far. Have fun!

Its on my list for sure. Gonna use it to train the family. 627 is first though.
