S&W Model 27 versus Colt Python

When I was a rookie officer in 1973,I made a trade with my lt. for a Colt python, blue 4in.,with the box, dated 1968,with price marked $175.00. My trade was a S&W model 28 that I bought new for $108.00,and a Colt junior .25 cal. auto that I paid $50.00 for it. I carried the python for some...

Model 65 issued to police/federal agencies?

I was issued a 4in. model 65 as a police officer with Mission,Kansas police dept. When the dept. switched to 226 Sigs we were allowed to buy them at the trade in price, still have mine. Just f.y.i. when I was a deputy U.S. marshal in the 1980's I was issued a model 66 2 1/2 inch barrel. We could...

A gun with a police department past!

The guns are K.C.MO. pd, Buy the way in Kansas we carried .357's,or .38's . 12 extra rounds were carried worn in bullet loops with the handcuff case attatched to and below the 12 round carrier. This was worn on the opposite gun side. Not good at all for conbat reloading. Ed

Model 64-2 with 2" barrel info?

How about a 2-1/2 inch model 66 combat magnum. Same frame size, and versatile .357 or .38 special plus target sights for competing equal much better scores. They are great shooters.

Model 64-2 with 2" barrel info?

A model 64 2inch k frame is not a small revolver if you intend to carry it due to its bulk, and weight. Also, the short barrel it's not as practical as other barrel lenths for general use. If your wanting a more practical all round gun that you'll use, then you should pass on it. It likely will...

    Transition from .38 to .357 - why?

I became a police officer in the early 1970's,in the Kansas City area. At that time officers were carrying everything from .38 special up to .44 magnums. As political times changed we became restricted to then dept. issued model 65 .357 magnums [do to a good price on the guns]. Issued ammo to be...

    Smith and Wesson Carry

I carry either a s&w model 60 .38 cal.,or a colt detective .38 cal. Usually I'll carry the 60 because of the smaller size, and less weight. Also, I don't believe accurate follow up shots can be delivered fast, and accurate with .357 mags in a small revolver. Mine is loaded with .38 cal.+p's. A...

    looking at 9mms

Your going to get so many opinions on this, with many recommending a S&W auto. After all this is a S&W forum. I've carried and shot smith, colt revolvers for 30+ years as a police officer. Also, glock, colt, sig, and berreta autos. I still own and carry all of them as suits my needs. In auto's i think...

    Model 66 with 357 mags

As a police officer I carried a model 66 and used 125 grain remington jhp's in it for duty rounds. A fellow rookie officer shot a fleeing suspect with a model 10 loaded with 200 grain .38 special ball ammo, and the round ricoched off the back window of the car window! He then switched to a hotter...

how much did your 1st one cost

I bought a four inch model 28 in Dec. 1972 for $108.00 to start my law enforcement career 01-01-73. I traded it and a .25 cal. colt junior auto which cost $50.00 for a 1968 python with the box which sold new in 1968 for $175.00 I still own the python. By the way when I bought the 28 I paid...

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MODEL 65 & 66?

I also carried a model 66 and a model 65 as a police officer. As you probably know both are stainless steel,K frame, and are .357 magnum caliber, both will handle .38 special as well. The 65 has fixed sights and a heavy barrel. The 66 has adjustable sights, and a shroud over the ejector rod. I...

    model 60 target

I have three model 60's one of which is a target model just like the one pictured. The other two have fixed sights. Without a doubt the adjustable sight beats the other two hands down for a sight picture and the ability to shoot more accurate. I think it's the best of the chiefs specials. Ed

    4" M66 w/stainless rear sight

I have my model 66 with stainless sights that I bought new as a young police officer. I had no trouble putting six rounds in a tea cup size circle at 30 yards with it. One of the most accurate handguns I ever carried. I bought it when I retired my 1968 colt python which was as accurate. Ed

    "What's in your shotgun?" *Buckshot*

By the way you may know this there is a police load 00 buckshot that has eight pellets instead of the standard nine pellets. Don't ask me why,but that's what we carried in the patrol cars. The way it's loaded it keeps a tighter group even at 25 yards, and many times you can get all eight pellets...
