As an owner of one...yes they can...also the trigger pull gets smoother as well at least it did in mine...

I am sure the gun will hold up as long as you stay within publish data. The question is will you hold up to max loads? Not to step on anyones toes I like full power loads but only sparingly. I tend to shoot more of the im barely going to poke a hole in paper load.

I bought a 2.5" 686-4 Plus recently for little more than $600 and the gun was almost new..I say yours should fetch somewhere between 550-650 in the right market..Will not mention names but internet auction sites.

To me the 4" mountain gun balances the best.

I think functional wise they are the same. The only reason to consider the 642 is if you like stainless more than blued. I have a 642 a friend has a 442 we carried them the same way. He has no problems with rusting and neither do I.

Carry a 642 sometimes and sometimes I forget I have it.

Im not a collector and I plan to shoot and carry the gun. Has anyone ever holstered one? How durable is the laser engraving? What holster would you recommend if any for outside the pants while camping or as a backup while hunting. Thanks for u guys help. One more question how much should I have...

Joni Lynn I had seen your gun in another thread and in made me want the gun i bought more. So I had to have it.

+1 on Simply Rugged. Had him made me one for my 686P 2 1/2" and all I can say is WOW.

Found this one the other day. I just took it out of layaway. My first mountain gun a 629-2. The shop had it NIB. Hopefully the photo posting works!
